Editorial review from Citysearch 4/8/2013

At one time I can say the food was pretty good the service was never anything to brag about, but this time I was really disappointed. went with a party of seven , we wanted supped pace they said no sea food on Sundays, so we ordered chicken parm it was frozen pattys terrible, next we had cavatelli it was over cooked, the salad was bland, the bragoil was dry and tasteless. Very over priced never again will I go back or recommend..... more

No menu???? 5/1/2011

the most ridiculously restaurant I have ever been. First off, no menu, we will by no chance to know the price. For a party of 3 ordering a meat sauce penne, chicken pasta, a steak and a glass of wine. The food is so-so, steak is overcooked and dry. The bill came out $65.00 And funny thing is next table for party of 4, I saw they ordered 2 appetizer, 4 full size meal and everyone wine. The waiter shout their bill is $52.00. That sound strange. Without menu, without price to referring to. The waiter name their own price. I suggest the new comer or tourist to go some place else for a better tasting meal that you know better what and how much you are eating. This is just a scam, people don't go there......... more

Great Food, Great Atmosphere, Idiot Reviewers 10/12/2010

I never contribute to these collections, but the so-called reviews on this page are so ridiculously off base and elitist that I felt compelled to. I have lived in the Bronx all my life and was raised on my mother's Calabrese cooking (don't anyone say anything about my mother!) so I think I know a thing or two about what Italian food is supposed to taste like. If you want white table cloths and waiters with napkins draped over their arms and a fancy menu with $25 pasta dishes, then stay in Manhattan where you belong. We don't need or want you up here. Whoever thinks this place is overpriced really needs to check on how their lobotamy went. The food is excellent southern Italian fare. If you think penna alla vodka is Italian food, then you got what you deserved. Whenever I miss my mother's cooking, this is where I go. My mother wasn't too patient with fussy people who thought they knew what they were talking about asking her how something was prepared either!! Bottom line, this is a real Italian place for real Italians and their friends. Quelli che solomente pensono che sono italiani, andatevi via!! more

Give your money away if you want to 7/27/2010

First, let's get one thing straight - the user reviews here all miss the mark, I mean REALLY miss the mark. Are these real customers or friends of the owners This place is cramped, is plastered with zagat plaques on every wall (uuh, tacky), has red vinyl ""tablecloths"", rickety little chairs, and, in my personal opinion, is a dump - not ""charming"" as others have described it. I found this to be one of the most stressful service experiences I've ever had. The waiter basically shouts ""What do ya want, pasta, veal, chicken? I said, ""Well, how are they prepared? Do you have a menu? ""No menu"" he replied. Too much machismo and testosterone in that restaurant - you can still be macho and have polish, but these guys are very ""rough."" Anyway, I was hoping the food would make up for all of this. I wound up doing something I though would be safe, penne pasta with vodka sauce The worst, and let me repeat, the worst penne alla vodka I have ever had. The pasta was undercooked and the sauce was watery - neither was piping hot, more like lukewarm. I grew up on Tuscan cooking - this place is an embarassment to Italians and to Italian cuisine. The last thing that ticked me off was the ""bill"". The waiter basically comes over and gives you the ""number"". I'm leery...cash only, no bills, no written itemized list of items sold, hmmm? Anyway, this place is a ripoff (high prices for a VERY low end experience)...go to a proper Italian restaurant for the money...they are literally printing money at your expense. Don't let them take advantage of you. Pros: Absolutely positively NONE Cons: Embarrassment to ""Italian"" cuisine more

Sad to say 7/2/2010

Sad to Say, It use to be the place that never disappointed, I could talk this place up and it always lived up to it reputation, I great home style meal with a good price to match. Well that was the past, the food is inconsistent and you better hold on to your seat when you get the bill. With no menu and pricing you never no what you?re going to get. I used to love her but it's all over now ... Pros: Food is good when its on Cons: Its not cheap more

disappointing 6/30/2010

We went as a group of 6 people that were attending the Fancy Food Show. Had a great recommendation from a customer of ours at our Italian Restaurant. Went with 2 chefs, a master butcher, wine specialist, and all are world travelers. The food was terrible except for the calamari. Salad was bland, Spaghetti with clams, white wine, butter & garlic was bland, suasages and meatball were tasteless (must have been steamed since breakfast - we were there at 2pm). Everything was bland and taseless, even the service. The world cup was on so we were more of an inconvenience for them than anything. I don't know how much my boss paid for the lunch but my opinion is that it was way too much. Good thing we stopped at Umberto's for oysters and Edigio's for cannoli's. Maybe they feed the neighbors and regulars differently than the rest of their clientele. Pros: Calamari, location Cons: Food, service more

Southern Italian Paradisio 6/28/2010

I have been coming to Dominicks for years; although I admit I have not been there for far too long for my taste. Pros: Food Cons: Jerks who don't know the score more

Not what we expected 3/22/2010

We had planned this trip to Dominick's after watching a travel documentary about restaurant's in NYC. This one was well recommended. We drove from Philadelphia to spend the day in NYC. Our guests were from Florida. Pros: good area to shop, amply parking Cons: not accepting of credit/debit card more

USED TO BE REALLY GOOD... 10/10/2009

I have always loved Domenick's but this time, the waiter couldn't have cared less. He barely gave us the specials (we had to drag them out of him) and once we were finished he beligerantly gave us the amount owed. My easygoing friend lost her temper and told him and told me ""we are never coming back"". I guess they don't need us anyway. more

EXTREMELY Over Rated 10/15/2008

My husband and I decided to try Dominick's and boy were we disappointed. To start we had the baked clams which were just baked with some plain breadcrumbs sprinkled on top, there was nothing good about them at all. For dinner I had the veal parm which was not even real veal, I believe it was some kind of processed veal the kind you get pre-made with the breading and all. The veal was extremely tough and the sauce was blah to say the least. My husband had the stuffed peppers which were so so if that. The food was some of the worst food I had and I don't understand why some people are rating this place with 5 stars. I am italian and I know what real italian food should be and this is not it. The service is horrible and the waiters are rude but you do get a good size portion but who wants to even eat it. Save your money and stay away from this place. Pros: Huge quantity of food Cons: Food is so bad it doesn't matter how much they give you more

food good but overpriced ,service fair at best. many better places on arthur ave 8/19/2008

used to like eating here but long past the days when worth the price. food ok but service is only fair at best. prices are higher than most other joints with food as good or better on the same street so skip this place unless no choice Pros: food ok but so are many other places on same street Cons: prices and service more

BIG disappointment 6/14/2008

As a professional cook (executive chef for a major cruise line) I'm pretty understanding when it comes to the challenges restaurants face. I always give a place the benefit of doubt and look to the good , not just the bad. Unfortunately I cannot say very much good about Dominicks. Wife & I ate there today. I knew the drill..no menus. Server said 'we can make anything so I asked for veal saltiomboca...they couldn't make it. My wife asked for manacotti...couldn't make it. She had baked ziti...tasted like boxed pasta with watery tomato sauce from a can and not very flavorfull cheese broiled for a minute or two. I had veal picatta..sauce was 'OK' but the veal was par boiled, not sauteed. Chianti was good quality, DOCG italian but very young..2006, .nothing special. Wife asked for meatballs to spice up the ziti...meatballs came with cheap sausage. Meatballs were bland with lots of filler (probably breadcrumbs). Salad was store bought icebuerg lettuce with tough tomatos and bad italian dressing. Tablecloths brown, sticky naugahyde, dining family style, service indifferent. Billl...$79. Unless the wine was $40+, meal was grossly overpriced. I'll stick with Angelinas on Mamaroneck Ave in White Plains for future meals when my ship is in port....Chef Sabio Pros: No wait Cons: Poor quality food and indifferent service...overpriced more

hm, well... 2/9/2008

we ate here tonight. we were given a number and told to wait upstairs in the bar area, where we were promptly asked if we wanted to order drinks, which, btw, seems to only consist of alcohol, nothing like tea or similar. after a while (no longer than 20 minutes), our number was called and we were brought to a family-style table. we sat next to another couple, but no one was inbetween us, so it wasn't so bad. it took a while to order, when out of nowhere, the server came up and said ""what do you want?"" we were like, um, never got a menu. ""we don't have menus. what do you want, we can make anything."" so we ordered just what we knew. everyone was getting this salad, so we got it. it was actually cheap iceburg lettuce drenched in bad itialian dressing. we had to ask for bread. when dinner came, i had ordered baked ziti, of which it was nearly an entire box worth of ziti with melted cheese and cheap tomato sauce. our other dish was chicken parmesian. it was not chicken breast as you would expect, but what looked like reconstitued chicken (and dark meat at that), overfried, with cheap tomato sauce. portions were huge, so if you aren't expecting GOOD food, you'll at least get a LOT of food. when the ""bill came"", there was no bill, the server just ran around and told people, ""when you are ready, your bill is $40 even."" really? how would i know? there are no prices, no menu. we think there was a menu on the wall behind us, in a heavy server traffic place so you'd feel bad stopping there to look at it. it was just ok. everyone was in a hurry, but food was slow-coming. and the tables were too close together, so when those closer to the walls need to be served, or when they were trying to leave, get in, or go to the bathroom, they had to squeeze in and out. it was an ok experience. went on a recommendation, but are not likely to come back. Cons: bad imitation itialian food, crowded more

The best Italian food this side of Italy. 10/6/2007

I've been to Dominick's a number of times. Pros: They will make whatever you want, just ask. Cons: None. Old neighborhood atmosphere, great people to talk with. more

Closest you'll come to Sunday dinner at Nona's! 9/27/2007

This place is the REAL DEAL. Delicious homestyle italian - authentic! Favorites include stuffed artichoke, clams orreganato, Mussels with red sauce, Pork chop with vinegar peppers, fries, Rigatoni Bolognese, eggplant parm. Beware - the portions are huge. Forget about dessert - they don't have it! more

BEWARE!!!! 9/14/2007

The people who work there are very rude. I would never recommend this place to anyone. They didn't even understand what a corkage fee was!! Completely rude and horrible, even the management. Cons: EVERYTHING more

If the steak pizzaola's still available, get it. 1/28/2007

We've been going there for 22 years, since our kids were 4 and 6 and the place was recommended by a cop at the Bronx Zoo who warned us away from more pricey tourist places nearby. The staff treated our kids like young adults, talking directly to them. There were no menus and no checks then. just ""Whaddyuh want?"" and ""Wajjuh have?"" We loved it, and the food was excellent. The parkings's tougher now, the wait's a lot longer, but the food's still definitely is worth the aggravation. If you're looking for a quiet little candle-lit table in the corner, go somewhere else. Pros: Everything. Okay, maybe a little too noisy. Cons: None, unless you're looking for a romantic mood. more

HUGE disappointment 12/4/2006

Not much better that cafeteria food. A step up for the local Fordham U students but sub par for anyone over 21. Didn't even want to take the inedible chicken scarpariello home for my cat. House wine was swill. This place is long past its prime. I grew up in the Bronx and went to Fordham and had alsways heard about Dominicks. Maybe I've had too much good food in far better restaurants. Victoria's or Raos sauce out of the jar is superior. Thank God we only had to wait ten minutes. Salad, however, was good..just like my mother used to make. more

Unique dining experience 10/25/2006

I haven't been to Dominick's since I was 13 years old. My father used to take me there before Yankee games and it became a childhood memory that will never be forgotten. 27 years later I had the opportunity to return with my wife and kids and not much has changed. Family style tables, no menu's, wait staff that might as well be family....and then the food. The bread...the antipasta...that alone is worth going for but it doesn't stop there. Our waiter had all of our favorites made to order however I have to go back after seeing all the different food going by to other tables. I know it must have been delicious. Stuffed artichokes, broccoli rabe, Italian roasted chicken, meatballs, veal chops...I'm going back next month. We went on a Wednesday night at 7:30 pm, expecting to wait however we got seated right away. Very reasonable price wise....family of 5 for $130.00...ya can't beat that. If your going to Little Italy...the Bronx you have to stop at Dominick's....just don't expect white table clothes and romantic seating. Expect a unique dining experience. Pros: High quality Italian food, unique ambience Cons: Arthur Ave is more difficult to find than Mulberry St more

Best Pasta outside Italy 8/29/2006

First of all, even the most mediocre restaurants in New York typically have AT LEAST a 45 minute wait on Saturday nights. If you expect to go to a great place like Dominick's on a weekend and wait only a half hour, you must not have eaten out in New York very much. But if the food is worth it, you wait (as I did tonight, waiting 45 minutes on a Wednesday night to get into Dominick's for the umpteenth time). The dude below knows nothing about food, especially since he thinks chicken marsala should be made with charonnay or something other than Marsala (hence the name). Marsala isnt ""made"" with white wine, it IS wine (sometimes white). The mushrooms are stewed in the wine for a very long time and the dish is very sweet. Pros: Best Italian food in NY, inexpensive Cons: Can get crowded, long waits more
