City People's offers full range of services 7/28/2007

try the City People's Garden and Design folks in madison. we've twice had Anne come out and consult with us. the first time she did quick sketches based on what we told her we wanted and then we had the installation team give us bids on various components like a granite retaining wall and a flagstone patio. we decided to go with the retaining wall and had them install it and i think it turned out beautiful and made such a big difference in our yard. we did some of the other features ourselves based on her ideas. i recently had Anne come out again to advise me on plants for the beds in front of our house. i felt like both times Anne listened to what we wanted and incorporated our ideas when they were appropriate and advised us against other ideas like plants that wouldn't do well in specific locations. she even offered advice on the cultivation of existing plants and referred us to a bamboo specialist to help us control a bamboo that had escaped it's container. prices are competitive but not the cheapest. work was done professionally and on schedule. definitely recommend these guys. more

Lovely local garden store 4/23/2006

With a large selection of landscaping and food-growing plants, as well as seeds, pots, soil, and everything else you need for gardening, City People's Garden Store has what you're looking for. They have a large outdoor nursery, with the native plants clearly labeled. The employees are quite helpful and the prices are reasonable. You can also shop here for gardening books and some household items and even furniture! more

Very helpful service and cats 4/13/2006

It's true that City People's has high quality gardening supplies, plants, seeds and gifts. They also have great customer service, offering whatever help you need from picking plants to loading your car. And my kids are delighted each and every time by the friendly cats lounging around the place. more

Spendy convenience 4/3/2006

I go to City People's on Madison Avenue about 3-4 times per year when I have small gardening needs that don't require a trip to a big nursery like Wells Medina. Generally City People's has what I'm looking for offering a good (not great) selection. I like the indoor part of the store of gift items. It's an unexpected but great place to pick up a card or housewarming gift. The staff at City People's is just ok. I tend to need some guidance when I'm looking for something new to spruce up our flower pots and it's hard to get anyone's attention and when you do I find that they aren't really interested in making recommendations. They are there more to answer specific questions or point you in the direction of the item in question. City People's is great for convenience but for selection and often better price, I recommend some of the nearby nurseries. more

Gifts, plants, something for everyone! 1/6/2006

The routine goes something like this (and will tell you lots about the store, so bear with me)... My husband needs new plants for the yard. We go to City People's. We walk around the nursery outside, sometimes with our puppies in tow. I exclaim at prices* as he loads up the wagon and the puppies greet strangers (when they're along for the ride). I get cold/bored/indecisive and I head inside. On the way, I pick up vegetable and herb starters, and then put them back down because I remember I'm no good at growing vegetables and these are too delicate and expensive to lose. I look at houseplants and garden art and exclaim at prices. I pick out a pretty new pot, and then head inside. I examine the shelves full of fertilizer and wonder if there's anything we're almost out of. Then, I look at their twenty different styles of birdhouses because I know I will one day get one for my in-laws. I try out different gardening tools and toys because I know they're also good gifts. I hurry past the seeds because, again, I'm not good at that kind of thing, and I jump when I notice there's a cat asleep on the table right next to me. In the back corner, I poke and pinch their huge selection of succulents and cacti and pick out a new one for the office. Back outside for another pot. I peek into the nursery to make sure my husband's still browsing. Then, I look at cards, journals, wrapping paper, books, candles, lotions, pillows, bookshelves, and stools. My husband comes inside to pay for his plants. I ask him if he saw the outrageously priced, but nice, statue/arbor/bench/etc in the covered outdoor area, and then drag him around the entire store to point out all the cute things I've found. At the cash register, I find some cute jewelry or candy or small toy and add it to the pile of loot at the last-minute. Everyone is happy. * The prices for plants (and many other items) are high, but the plants are healthy and tend to survive when plants from the big garden stores don't. more

great garden plant varieties and tools 11/6/2005

i have had great luck at the City People's on Madison. they have an nice sized nursery with a good variety of annuals and perennials including shade plants, roses, trees and all shapes and colors of border plants. they also have several pots made up with interesting combinations of plants to inspire you and they are always very helpful in suggesting plants or finding the right one for your spot. if you are feeling completely overwhelmed, they have a garden design center where you can hire someone to consult with you or even draw up plans. then its up to you whether you install the garden or they come and put in sprinklers, move rocks, build patios and plant plants. inside they have all kids of tools, pots, indoor plants, books and gardening gifty kinds of things. definitely check them out! more

Great Quality and Selection 9/21/2005

City People's is a great place to buy flowers and plants for the yard and garden. The outdoor section has a good variety of plants, from roses to trees and shrubs. The greenhouse holds potting plants, and the store itself contains a broad selection of garden tools and knick-knacks. It is a very enjoyable place to shop, with a nice atmosphere and lots of vigorous, healthy plants. I have had better luck with the plants I have bought at City People's thriving and surviving than I have with plants purchased anywhere else. You will pay a bit more for this, but it's better than paying twice to replace a plant that didn't make it. more

A nice patch of green 8/20/2005

City People's has been in the Madison Valley since back when people just called it the Central District, before all the cute little shops popped up around it. They have a friendly staff that can help you find the resources to answer your plant and gardening questions. They have a pretty good selection of perennials, shade plants, water garden plants, and some eye-popping ornamentals. Will you find the rare salvia you are looking for? Maybe not, then again they just might have it. Most of the basics are here, and a few standouts too. Go on inside and pet one of the resident cats laying around in the displays, look at some fancy soaps, and pick up a few cute birthday cards for upcoming celebrations. Try and get on the mailing list for the 15% off coupons or use one from the Chinook Book, which will bring the price down more into the average range. more

Great in-city garden supply 8/18/2005

You'll find every kind of plant here plus knowledgeable sales people who are happy to help you figure out the best plants for your yard. The prices are very reasonable considering that you actually get service (unlike the big box garden stores). They also have great greeting cards in the back. more

A Fun Place to Browse 8/17/2005

I have enjoyed browsing around this store for fun or to find a gift. They have a great home selection (place mats, tablecloths, glassware, etc.) and it is an excellent place to find a housewarming gift. I noticed that they have baby gifts, toys and a hardware section as well. This store is in an excellent location near many other unique shops and restaurants. more

City Peoples Garden Store boasts a wide variety of items for your home gardening needs. The small store located on E Madison has a surprising selection of indoor plants, herbs, grasses, and even trees. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. The small nursery around back has a variety of perennials and annuals, small junipers, and vines. Along the back is a section for shade loving plants and ferns. mulch and (yard) makeovers 7/5/2005

If you need a bag of mulch, a sweet-smelling herb, or a complete yard makeover, visit the Garden Store. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable, there is a variety of plants from which to choose, plus an indoor room filled with gardening tools and gifts that range from the practical to the winsome. The prices are slightly more expensive than ones found at chain garden stores, but the few extra cents is worth it in order to support the businesses of local merchants. more
