Terrific selection, food and atmosphere; ok service 7/17/2011

I have tried several different things at Chiang Mai Thai and I am NEVER disappointed. Great prices, wide variety of Asian dishes, and everything is SO YUM. I love the subdued lighting and Asian decor - very cool, old world, not 80s. It was the first place I tried green curry and though I've tried it at several places since, Chiang Mai Thai has THE best! The servers are hit or miss... we've had some really friendly, conversational ones, and others really seem like they'd rather be somewhere else and don't go to great lengths to disguise it. Honestly that has kept me from coming. But I love everything else! more

Bad service, bad food, bad juju 1/28/2011

This was my first experience eating at this restaurant...and will be my last. We started off in the bar area with the spring rolls. Who can mess up spring rolls? We then sat down at our table only to be ""greeted"" by our waitress who I think honestly wanted to pick a fight with us. She was the most unfriendly waitress I have ever encountered (I go out to eat about 2 times per week). Finally, my main entree was the yellow curry. It was flavorless, way to heavy on the coconut milk and just plain bad. The next morning, I had what felt like food poisoning. Yuck. Will not return to Chiang Mai Thai. more

""Where is our awkward server?"" 12/11/2010

A friend and I went out for a quick bite to eat at Chiang Mai for lunch. Our server promptly came over to the table when we arrived and then failed to show his face the rest of the afternoon. We found ourselves saying ""where did he go?"" the whole time. About 15 minutes after we had finished eating he stopped by to box up our food. He pulled dishes aside that we did not wish to have boxed and set them on a ledge across from our booth. He came back with our food nicely boxed and our check. Another 15 minutes went by before someone stopped over to pick up our payment. Of course, it wasn't our server. The woman who stopped by initially offered to run our cards, then changed her mind when we told her we needed to split up the check. She handed our receipt back and told us to do the math. She then looked over at the dishes our server had set on the ledge and asked if we needed the food boxed up- which was interesting since we had our boxed food right in front of us. Another 5 minutes went by before our server came over. He happily agreed to split up our check for us and run the cards. Apparently there is a reason they ask you to do your own math- they don't know how. If you have two hours for lunch and a lot of patience, this is a great place to eat. more

Average Food and Minnesota Versions of ""Hot"" 10/3/2010

We had high expectations for this restaurant based on the CS reviews, but we were sorely disappointed. We dined with another couple and started with 2 appetizers, the fire wings and happy shrimp. Both were average at best. For a thai place and with with the name ""fire"" you'd think they would have a kick but the sauce while tasty was bland. The shrimp were small and overbreaded but had decent flavor. For entrees we had the yellow curry chicken, pad thai and 2 stir fry dishes. We ordered 2 flame HOT and our friends ordered 3 flame SUPER HOT. The flavor of the curry and the pad thai was OK, but overall they were average dishes and the HOT was more like mild while the SUPER HOT finally had a bit of heat to it. more

Good food, questionable staff 6/25/2009

A picky friend made a few extra requests before our food was delivered, and when we got it there was a huge spoonfuls of hot peppers in the middle of our food. The server asked if it was hot enough for us. This is one of those places where the staff messes with your food. Pros: food Cons: staff more

Thai gone old 4/20/2009

I hadn't been to Chiang's for a few years and remembered it as fancy and tasty- what happended? My order had tofu that I am sure was from the night before because it was rubbery rather than crispy then soft. The potatos were not cooked all the way through either, yuck. I will stya with TrueThai from now on since they are both about the same price. Pros: good location Cons: bad food at a high price more

Great Food 3/22/2009

I have been to Chiang Mai Thai 3 times now with 3 different groups of people and I have enjoyed every experience. The fresh spring rolls are great and the Tom Yum soup is extremely flavorful. Be carefule when they ask you how spicy you want your dish, I love spicy food and a 2 is about my limit. Enjoy! Pros: service, taste, price more

Better options... 1/29/2009

sure the atmosphere is ok. the menu is limited and the food is mediocre; even bad. I just think khin do down the road has better food, chai's thai is VERY authentic and fabulous, Azia (on Eat Street) has a wide range menu! Just say no on this one. more

Excellent curry! 11/22/2008

The sweet green curry was excellent, the best I have ever tasted. I asked for it to be made one notch hotter than normal and they did that. It was perfect. My husband ordered the fiery seafood entree and he said it was dreadfully bad (tasteless sauce and just not good). I wondered as we were leaving why we didn't send his back. The calamari appetizer was not very good either, the batter fell off as you tried to eat it. Overall, I would recommend Chiang Mai Tai because the curry was so good. Also, they take reservations and on busy nights, this would seem like an excellent idea. Pros: Excellent green curry Cons: Parking is hard to find, fiery seafood more

Perfect for those who like to be treated like garbage. 7/13/2008

The perfect uptown place to go if you love to put up with with bad service. Bartender was drunk/high on a Sunday evening unable to comprehend simple orders. Also had a magnificent condescending attitude to everyone she served. I paid $20 for a beer to simply escape the disgusting customer service...waiting for change would be like asking God for a Cadillac. I had much nicer interaction, though much lower expectation, at the McDonald's I went to later. Cons: Bad staff more

Absolutely delicious! 6/26/2008

Best Thai I've had in the Cities! My curry was absolutely to die for and our server was friendly and helpful. I highly recommend giving Chiang Mai Thai a try! more

Some of the best Thai food in town, great food and drink options, good decor and friendly staff. 4/26/2008

I am a huge fan of Thai food, and this is hands down one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Minneapolis. I highly recommend the jalapeno cream cheese puffs, the chicken satay, the fresh spring rolls, and the curry dishes. I have never had something here that I didn't enjoy. Candlelit tables and a fun layout make this place feel cozy and relaxing. Great service, and reasonable prices. I highly recommend this place! Pros: Great food, good service, good drink options. Cons: Sometimes the spice levels vary depending on who's working, so I recommend going a bit lighter and then adding spice if you need to. more
