Camp Canine LOST our dog - every pet owner's worst nightmare 2/22/2012

I urge you to NOT use this daycare. You can avoid the trauma we went through, the legal hassles, and out-of-court settlement which was paltry. My boyfriend and I were travelling, so we arranged for our mini dachshund, Hazelnut, to stay at Camp Canine during work hours. Our friends would pick her up at night and take her home. One night they went to pick her up at 7pm, and Camp Canine said Hazelnut was not there, instead she RAN AWAY AND IS LOST IN CENTRAL PARK. They said a ""customer left the door open and let her out"" and saw our dog scamper out the daycare, up the stairs, onto the street, and into Central Park nowhere to be seen, with the ""camp counselors"" trying to chase her but to no avail. Furious, our friends bolted into Central Park calling Hazelnut over and over. No Hazelnut. Search continued, with trips to the police station, local pounds, ""amber alerts"" all over craigslist, 300 distributed flyers with the dog's picture, etc. No Hazelnut. It rained that night with lots of thunder. No Hazelnut. The next day, a man found her at 110th and riverside drive, OVER 30 BLOCKS AWAY from daycare. Our dog was scratched up, one leg limping, trembling, hungry, and traumatized from spending the night all alone in the streets. It's a miracle that she didn't get run over by a car being that she's 11 pounds and low to the ground. So much for the ""state of the art security system"" advertised on their website. Honestly, there isn't one. The staff at Camp Canine refused to give us the video feed of the floor on that fateful day. They did post a ""lost dog"" flyer at the local animal center to ""help."" This speaks volumes about their efforts. They are not web-savvy, did not think of craigslist, and obviously were scared of the legal ramifications since our dog was lost under their watch. I won't go into details about the negotiations but they admitted fault and decided to settle out of court with us. Nevertheless we are happy Hazelnut is safe and home now. Her injuries are not serious and she's doing very well. Regretfully, in our haste we didn't check Yelp about Camp Canine. The one-star reviews and death of one dog say it all. The ""camp counselors"" look like they hate their jobs, don't smile, and are not approachable. I""m all for supporting small businesses but this one is run with little safety (two doors does not make a ""state of the art security system""), lax effort and responsibility, and sorry, one ""freak accident"" does not make it safe to go there again. Ever. This story has a happy ending, but it could happen to you too. Were it not for the heroic actions of our friends and witnesses, our dog could have been lost forever. more

Best dog day care in NYC 1/29/2012

I?m surprised it?s taken me this long to write a review for something I regard so highly. My wife and I have been taking our Jack Russell Terrier, Miles, to Camp Canine five days a week for the last seven years ? plus overnight boarding on countless holidays. We couldn?t be happier with the experience. Larry, Peter and their entire staff are kind, professional and clearly care a great deal about the dogs they look after. The facility is clean, safe, reasonably priced, the grooming service is fantastic and the hours are great. But most importantly Miles absolutely loves it there. Every time we round the corner of 73rd and Columbus he breaks into a run and flies down the stairs, just dying to go to Camp. Obviously he?s treated well. Day care at Camp Canine definitely improves my dog?s quality of life, and mine. I highly recommend it. more

Great Day Care 1/1/2012

I have been taking my 11 year old mixed terrior (Macabee) to Camp Canine for day care 2-3 days / week since he was two years old. Over the years Camp Canine has worked out real well for me since my schedule changes week-to-week and Camp Canine has been able to seamlessly accommodate me. Macabee eagerly runs into Camp Canine in the morning greeting all the staff and leaves at the end of the day very tired. With a high energy dog this is a blessing. I also use Camp Canine for dog grooming -- they do a nice job and it is convenient since I arrange for Camp Canine to groom Macabee on a day that he is already in day care. I have been very satisfied with the services of Camp Canine ? they are flexible, attentively watch the dogs, and Macabee is happy spending time there. more

Great place - my dog and I both love it! 8/3/2011

I've been taking my dog to Camp Canine for more than a decade. When I first moved to NYC, I couldn't imagine leaving him in an apartment full time after he was used to suburban life. No worries - Camp Canine offered a fantastic solution. He always comes home happy and worn out after a day of playing, and I'm happy to know he is being cared for in a safe environment with a well-structured schedule, whether on a day visit or an extended overnight stay. more

My pug LOVES this place! 3/24/2011

I've been taking my pug Daisy to Camp Canine for 7 or 8 years or so. I had tried a few places that were closer to my apartment that came highly recommended, but she never wanted to go back to any of them. In fact, it was heartbreaking how she was scared to even walk by the places. Then we found CC and she LOVES it! I am confident she will be well taken care of and looked after. They board her when I go away on vacation and, increasingly so, as I travel for work. The staff and owners have always been accomodating to my hectic schedule, and Daisy always emerges extremely happy and tired from all of her play. Her joyous anticipation is apparent from the time we turn the corner on 73rd St and she doesn't think twice about running into the smaller dog play area. more

Attentive, Loving and Compassionate Care for Over a Decade 3/21/2011

Larry, Peter and the entire Camp Canine staff have been an important part of our lives for almost 13 years. Our beloved black Lab Oscar became a camper when he was just 4 months old and was a joyous, happy and devoted camper until shortly before his passing a few weeks ago. Oscar loved Camp so much! He would start turning around in circles and wagging his tail whenever we turned onto West 73rd Street. He did a little doggie jig when he got through the door and raced back to the big dog's room. Camp was a family affair -- our two girls, Oscar and the rest of us loved the Halloween parties and just stopping by to look at the dogs at play. The staff knew Oscar so well and met all his needs -- from a late night pee-pee, to special dietary and medication requests, and towards the end of his life, when arthritis made it difficult for him to climb up and down the stairs, to carrying him gently and lovingly. They noticed small changes in his mood, appearance or condition and always gave good and sound advice. They loved him dearly and he loved them. We were so heartbroken when he passed away, and Larry and Peter comforted all of us and touched us deeply with a gift in Oscar's honor to Trees of Life. We feel so blessed to have been a part of the Camp Canine family, and apart from my parents, there were absolutely no other people we would ever trust with our dearest baby boy. more

Camp Canine is the best!! 12/28/2010

Camp Canine rocks! I started bringing my Maltese, Diva, there about a year and a half ago after she was recommended by a friend who brings his Malti-poo there. I had been taking her to various places around New York City and Massachusetts. I have had nothing but positive experiences here, Sue is the best! She really loves my dog, and does a beautiful job grooming her. I have gone from keeping Diva in a longer show coat, to shorter cropped cuts and have brought various pictures to show what I wanted, and every time I pick Diva up she looks even better than I anticipated! When I come in with a new cut to try, I always joke around that even if it doesn't look *exactly* like the picture, I'm not worried because Diva always looks beautiful when I pick her up. She also seems to be in good spirits - not tired or ""worn out"" like she did when I had her groomed elsewhere. I met Gloria as well - I'm not sure if she's Sue's assistant or a groomer herself - but she is also very sweet and accommodating, and loves Diva too! She is always done on time, and the prices are reasonable for the area, and even for most of the outer boroughs - I live in Queens and the prices are similar there. I make the trip to Manhattan just to have Sue groom her - and the entire staff is always wonderful and very nice. They have even managed to squeeze me in when I called last minute - I desperately needed an appointment last Tuesday (12/21) and called late Monday afternoon. By 3pm on Tuesday, Diva and I were on our way home, Diva freshly groomed and smelling great with a Christmas bow in her hair! I always joke about this with her and the staff - but I'll never cheat on Sue!! more

Great Staff 11/18/2010

Camp Canine has been grooming and boarding our dog for over 5 years! She is blind but we know she's in good hands whenever we have to leave her at the camp. The gentle staff greets her by name and her groomer is always happy to see her. The staff treats her very kindly and her groomer does an excellent job! more

This place is Dirty & Disgusting! 10/27/2010

I have been taking my dog there for almost two years for grooming. Although it has always smelled horrible, he seemed to be OK and it was a convenient location. My dog is a rescue so as I explained to them, I want to drop him off when they are ready to groom him and pick him up the minute he is done. Today I dropped him off at 11 am and went there at 4 PM while he was still on the table. Which means he had been there for 5 hours already. The groomer Sue yelled at me and said she didn't want to groom my dog because he cries and it bothers her head. Of course he cries, you locked him up for 5 hours! In the two years I have gone there, I have asked how he was EVERY time I pick him up. I have always had positive feedback except for today. I will NEVER bring him back there. The place is dirty, it has a horrible smell, the people are rude, and their customer service is despicable. more

Paws UP - The BEST dog day care in NYC 10/20/2010

Our dog can't get enough of Camp Canine. On Monday morning she's ready to go before I'm out of bed. She seems to know its playtime at daycare. She pulls me in the direction of west 73rd St. Its as if she can't wait to start playing with the other dogs. The staff is always accommodating, (she gets special food when she stays overnight). When I call to ask silly questions, (is she having fun) they describe what she's doing with the other dogs. We have tried other daycare in the area but this one is, paws up, the best more

These guys are pros for pups! 9/27/2010

Camp Canine and their staff have created a wonderful environment for all dogs, large and small, with three spacious play group areas where dogs are separated by size. I understand they've been at their Upper West Side location for 15 years. So they really know their stuff. Our puppy is always happy and excited to go back! more

Just Ask Jack! 9/25/2010

I have been using Camp Canine for over a year now for day camp and overnight boarding. The staff is friendly and the facility is very clean. Jack (of the Russell variety) is excited to go in and comes home happy and totally exhausted from playing all day. Thank you Camp Canine for being there! more

BAXTER LOVES CAMP CANINE! 9/24/2010

It was very hard finding a boarding facility to leave our adored pet schnauzer that we felt totally comfortable with. After considerable research, we left Baxter at Camp Canine. The staff is friendly and capable and Bax looked great after his one-week stay. They also did an excellent job of grooming him before we picked him up. Bax tells us he was treated like the only dog there ... it certainly looks that way to us! Highly recommend. more

This camp rocks! 9/23/2010

have a 13 year old Shih Tzu who we have always been hesitant about leaving with anyone, let alone a daycare place. But, we had no choice when we took a vacation last month. Not only did the staff instill a lot of confidence that she would be well taken care of, when we picked her up she was in a great mood (maybe better than when we left her!). She smelled good, seemed quite healthy and we would definitely suggest that anyone who needed to board their dog for a few hours or a few days check them out! more

Me and my dog love this place 9/22/2010

I used Camp Canine for the first time earlier this summer - I left my dog there for a few days when I had to go away on business. Now every time we go back my dog literally pulls me down the block to get in - he must have had a good time! The staff is smart and sincere and I feel totally comfortable leaving my dog with them. I've had nothing but good experiences. more

A 2nd home for your pup! 9/22/2010

I use camp canine on a weekly basis. I know my baby is well cared for and that they give him the kind of attention he needs while i am away. He has a special diet regiment that they follow perfectly, if not would know from the stains on my carpet (eeww). I had sworn off boarding because of his diet until my friend from the dog beach put me in touch with them. For me, you cannot put a price on the safety and well being of my pup, but they manage to do it perfectly for a very reasonable price. I have used several others and they are SCARY! more

Great first time experience 9/22/2010

I met the groomer of camp canine at the columbus avenue street fair this past weekend. I never knew the place had been there so long. Dropped my terrier mix off for grooming on monday and was very pleased! She looks great. Reasonably priced as well. I will definitely return. more
