The only real menu here is coffee and beignets, a square French donut dusted with powdered sugar, that are to die for! You can have Cafe Au Lait, which is a chickory coffee blend topped with half a cup of cream. Or just plain old coffee. The plates and cups are the heavy type used in old diners. I've been coming here since I was a kid. Now I order coffee with my beignets instead of hot chocolate, but that's about all that's changed. The beignets are the stuff of Krispy Kreme-cravings. Different taste, but same addiction factor. I've tried beignets at a handful of other spots around the South and none compared, or were even edible for that matter. The Chicory coffee is incredibly flavorful and the perfect accompaniment to the light, fluffy sweets. Sit, chat and people watch for hours. It's a New Orleans tradition. Beignets and coffee--what more do you need? Whatever else you need, you won't find it at Cafe du Monde, but you will find perfect, fresh-from-the-fryer hot beignets and steaming cafe au lait, a sublime combination perfect at any time of day, especially late in the evening or early in the morning. more
