Black Forest Inn 4/9/2006

YUMMMMM.....Black Forest Inn! Black Forest Inn is a wonderful German restaurant located on "Eat Street" in Minneapolis. This restaurant has the best German food, that will fill you up! The food is very heavy, but delicious. My favorite is a stew made of sticky pasta and beef. The restaurant has a full service bar and inside seating, but also has a delightful patio in the back. It is intimate and perfect for summer dining. more

Good filling German fare 2/25/2006

We eat at The Black Forest Inn roughly 3-4 times per year. I'm not exactly an 'expert' on good German cuisine, but I know what I like, and I like what Black Forest has to offer: Good solid German comfort food. We're talking meats, sausages, noodles & dumplings, potatoes and the ubiquitous saurkraut, in a variety of traditional sauces and preperation styles. In season they've even got an outdoor patio and a beer garden, and there is always a good selection of traditional german brews to go with your meal. Like the other reviews mention, they'be been at their current location since 1965. That's 40 years of popularity! more

Beer Garden is Fun...Food Could Be Better 8/29/2005

The Black Forest Inn is one of the anchor restaurants on Nicollet Avenue-having weathered the avenue's rougher times before it became known as "Eat Street." Unfortunately, I think the Black Forest gets to coast along on it's theme restaurant niche-rather than the quality of the food served. While summers out on the patio are great-I wish the food was a little more up to par (especially at $10+ for a lunch entrée). Having had great German food in the past--Black Forest dishes are definitely poorly sauced-usually either too bland, or conversely, swimming in a disgusting sea of vinegar (sauerbrauten) by comparison. more

Black Forest Inn 8/28/2005

Nice place to go to, especially in summer (the restaurant has a nice outdoor seating area). Friendly service, though sometimes it can be a little slow. Prices are not bad. Food is tasty but heavy, just what one would expect to get at a German restaurant. I would recommend it for a dinner with friends, but not a date. more

German Neighborhood Ethnic Dining 8/17/2005

Amusing on the history of Twin Cities ethnic crusine, a friend commented that he remembered a day when one of the only ethnic restaurants was Black Forest Inn. In contemporary terms, it is hard to imagine a German kitchen serving Wiener Schnitzel, Sauerbraten, Spaetzel and Cherry Chocolate Torte as ethnic. Yet, Black Forest Inn, its patio and summer beer garden are cornerstones of Minneapolis varied cruisine and should stand proud after its 40 years down in the neighborhood. The Black Forest, located near the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis College of Art & Design, the old Artist Quarter Jazz Club, The Children's Theater and Guthire Theater and Walker Art Center also held its own with art patrons before nuevo cruisine took hold. And stories fill and haunt the plank floors and brown panel walls such as the time a mad patron of the Black Forest ran ino the bar banishing a gun and shot a bullet in the large photo mural of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). If you look closely you will find bullet hole and entry crater in the plexiglass covering. If you like authentic German food you will enjoy Black Forest, the beer graden in summer and the dusty brown paneled walls that engulf you in the bar and seated areas of the restaurant. more
