exotic, bright, a little silly 2/21/2003

the exotic flavor spectrum provides a challenge to the western palate with such dishes as acorn jelly and pickled steak. it's wonderfully cooked. and while i wonder if such cuisine will really cultivate cravings amongst the unschooled, i'm delighted to see the high marks below. the food is economical, intriguing, balanced and frequently tasty if not illuminating. the lighting is dumbly bright and oh god--the service is hammy. it's enthusiastic, professional and TOTALLY scripted. they need to drop the ""you are in the garden of bewon"" routine asap. Pros: exotic flavors, great execution, myriad dishes Cons: silly service routine, bright lights more

Awesome! 1/4/2003

We've eaten at some of the top Korean restaurants on the west coast and this is by far the best overall experience we've had! The food was exceptional and the 8 course menu provided just the right combination of quality and flavors. You won't regret eating here! Pros: Quality, Food, Service more

GOT TO TRY THIS!!! 11/17/2002

Definatly do the eight course meal. It is well worth it and affordable too. ($24.95 a person) The wait staff is very friendly and they explain everything on the menu. The restaraunt is small, but that is what makes it so unique. They keep it small so they can have give each of their guests enough attention. They make sure your water is full and that you are content. Best meal I have had out in a long time. Pros: the food, waitstaff, atmosphere Cons: kinda loud more

Bewon Over! 11/15/2002

It's great to see Korean food getting its due in the diverse Portland dining scene, and Bewon is the best way to start! Even in the food-rich NW you'll need to seek it out -- I don't feel bad for missing it until now since they've only been open for a few months. My wife and I had the 8-course dinner -- a perfect introduction to the restaurant. And, at $25 each, a bargain! The pumpkin-noodle salad (the 3rd course), however, was the find of the evening! Asian-food lovers won't be surprised by most of the fare, but it's prepared and presented so well that you know you'll be back for individual entrees on another visit. The entire staff was gracious and informative. A real treat! Pros: service Cons: small more

Superb - not a BBQ place 11/12/2002

If you're looking for traditional Korean BBQ, this isn't the place. Here you'll find an upscale dining experience, with some traditional fare, but also with some unique creations. Go for the pre-fix for an experience, and try the sweet after dinner drink with cinnamon. Service was superb, from the person seating you, multiple servers, and the manager. If the only negative is that the restaurant's interior could use more color, then it's a good bet. If you haven't tried Korean, start here. Pros: traditional fare, side dishes more

Fabulous! 11/5/2002

As a vegetarian who has never had Korean food, I thought this place was great. The food tasted so fresh. We went on a Saturday night and this little place was packed, so I recommend reservations. But the service was so polite, and they took the time to educate you about what you were eating, which was appreciated. Pros: Great service, Fresh Food, Tiny restaurant Cons: Tiny restaurant more

My girlfriend likes eating here :) 10/13/2002

My girlfriend and I went to BeWon on a Saturday evening. We did not have reservations. We were prompted seated. The service was very attentive. My girlfriend is fond of Korean food. She was very happy with the food and the service at BeWon. I recommend it! more

Wow 10/3/2002

A hidden treasure. The restaurant is a bit difficult to find, but well worth it once you do. I'm not sure too many people know about this place. The food is authentic Korean. Rivals anything that you would find in LA or New York...may even exceed them with certain dishes. Definitely try their set dinner...eight courses including dessert and rice cakes over the course of an hour and a half. I don't think there's an Asian restaurant in town that goes to this extent in presenting this style of dinner. Simply superb. Pros: Excellent service, Authentic cuisine more

Superb. 9/24/2002

One of the best restaurants I've ever had the pleasure of eating at in PDX. Wonderful, spicy & flavorful Korean food in a well-executed, minimalist setting; not your usual bbq stuff, but a variety of truly interesting dishes. Extremely friendly & helpful staff. I'd rank this one in my personal top 10 (currently includes Higgins, Genoa, Mio Sushi, Queen of Sheba, Pho Van, Plainfield's Mayur, Castagna's, El Gaucho, Tapeo, and now Bewon). more
