Worst

Used to be great, now, not so great...existing on its old reputation and, everyone ""in the area"" knows it. Only tourists or pseudo-affectionatos go there nowadays.

I have been to Berns several times and I consider it one of the best in Florida. The steaks are excellent, the onion soup is the best I have ever had, and the Caesar salad is great. They have a tremendous wine selection and their dessert menu is unbelievable. The service is also very good. When I go to Orlando on vacation, I drive with family to Tampa to have dinner at Berns. more

we were visiting relatives and they suggested we try Bern's and much to our delight we were impressed and very well sated after enjoying cocktails, filets, with all the rimmings and Banana Foster in the ""dessert"" train afterward. Most impressive was the tour of the in-house wine cellar and told of other similar cellars in a 4 block area to practically guarantee the vintage and year desired. I have eaten steak in many cities, in many countries, but this is the finest steak house I've have ever experienced. Dining is an exceptional pleasure. Service has been perfected and the steaks ain't bad. more

Nobody takes beef more seriously. The wine cellar is awesome. Only once did we encounter a somelier that was more impressed with himself than with the wine. Pros: top beef, top wine cellar, top service Cons: "bordello" type decor, crowded more

I am probably one of the youngest reviewers of Bern's by far but have had the honor twice of dining there. The atmosphere is by far, amazing. I love the ole dungeon-esque ambiance of Bern's. I have searched Tampa Bay high and low for the best French Onion soup and Bern's by far beats all of the others where they all taste the same. I have never had such attentive service both times, and I most of all liked the presentation of the food. My steak came on a sizzling skillet with vegetables and fried onions, which has now become my favorite way to eat steak. Thank you Bern's. You've created an everlasting memory for me. Berns is slipping 10/21/2002

Visited Bern's in May. Arriving about 4:30 with a party of four, were held in the entry-way UNNECESSARIALLY because we hadn't made a reservation (our hosts had just arrived by air and suggested Berns for dinner.) During our stay, there were always tables and wait-staff available. Food was good, not great, and much overpriced. Baked potato wasn't problery done, and shrimp cocktail was grossly overpriced, although very tasty. Service was just OK. Pros: Nice place Cons: over-priced, haughty, slow more

Rate for the food, not the flare 9/7/2002

Look, bottom line- Bern's is good, but when it comes to a good steak, all Bern's has is name recognition. After eating at Bern's and Charlie's many times, anyone who loves a good steak, and I mean anyone, will tell you that Bern's can't even compete with Charlie's, or Ruth's Chris or even Shula's for that matter. My only complaint about Berns is that I can't afford to go here every day.. because I would if I could. The food is great, the service is second to none, and there's nowhere else near that you can find the great selection of wine that they offer.     Luminaries from out of town automatically visit Bern's when they arrive in the Tampa Bay area. Limos jam the homely front parking lot and well-dressed diners crowd the foyer. For decades, the steakhouse has maintained its reputation for almost fanatically perfect food and service.

    The Food
    Start with one of the 24 varieties of caviar. Move onto vichysoisse, a creamy soup served chilled, accompanied by garlic toast and crackling homemade potato chips. The chateaubriand is delectable. Choose anything from a petite, seven-ouncer all the way to a belly-busting 48-ounce monster. It arrives sizzling, crisp on the outside, juicy and tender inside, crowned with garlic butter and ringed with bright vegetables. Save room for the chocolate, chocolate, chocolate cake or the bananas foster for dessert.
