Auction Aside, The Antique MALL is the Best in Virginia Beach! 6/28/2010

Don't miss the Antique MALL!!! (I haven't seen the "auction" that other reviewers are talking about. I was told that the auction is only held monthly in a different building.) At the ANTIQUE MALL there are alot of different Dealers. In the Mall many booths were running discount sales. I saw loads of great vintage and decor items at super prices! You can browse and shop for hours... Furniture, Jewelry, Antiques...My husband loves the vintage Auto and Farm Tools. My favorite is the DECOR! I purchased a trunkload of Beautiful and Creative vintage items for my Home. I think the Mall is open every day- I shopped twice the week I was in the area! If you love antiques and deals- don't miss this one! more

Auctioneer's Family bids on items too! 6/23/2010

One of the 5-star reviewers poo-poo'd another 1-star reviewer's comments about Rob, the auctioneer's son, bidding on auction items too. I believe that the auction owner (Tom) should not have his own family bidding on items too....especially in this case as Tom is part owner of the thrift store that Rob bids for! This drives prices high at the Barrett Street Auction. I used to get items for $10 or $15 but now Rob bids everything up to $50 or higher. To me, it's shady business they are doing. more

The Monthly Auctions are a Blast! 6/13/2010

I have attended at least 12 monthly auctions and they are well attended. If it's an extremely nice day attendance is down, and prices are better with fewer bidders. The selection of items is from A to Z and you must go to the preview on Friday before the Saturday auction. The staff members are helpful but very busy on that day, moving items to the center stage getting the free luncheon ready, etc. The lunch items are not gourmet, but it's a generous "free lunch". There are also free miscellaneous sized boxes and some packing materials available. The coffee is always on, and dozens of free donuts are available at 0800. They still go quickly. The comment about "Rob" is inaccurate. Anyone who attends the auction knows him...he's always there. He has rarely bid on the items I bid on. He buys a LOT of really inexpensive stuff that no one else bids on or wants - only a thrift shop could use it~! I don't recall that he's ever bid on high-end items. My wife loves the estate jewelry I bring her, and it appraises for much more than I pay at this auction. Almost garage sale prices for items from estates that don't want their parents' things. I highly recommend it. If you get "bit" by the auction bug, you can understand why there are regulars that attend almost every month. more

Auctions are a scam! 8/29/2009

The auctioneer's son, Rob, bids up the prices for items in the auction. His alibi is that he is bidding for his thrift store but the auctioneer gets mad if Rob doesn't show up to bid or is distracted. This is unethical but the auctioneer, Tom Giroux, doesn't give a d*mn. I used to get a decent price for furniture, glassware, china but since Rob has been bidding on stuff, NOT ANYMORE!! I've decided not to patronize them anymore. If they do this in their auctions, what are they doing in their antique mall? more

Hours of Browsing Fun 8/21/2005

I love this store, and I'm not even a real fan of antiques. There are cases and cases of items in this store - it would take hours to look at them all. My favorite part of the store are the display cases that hold the smaller items, everything from rare toys to antique jewelry. As far as I can tell everything is there on consignment from area dealers, and each dealer has their own case. I can't even begin to stress enough how much fun this place is! For the most part, the prices are reasonable, and I've often considered buying things I don't even have a use for just because they're unusual and cheaply priced. If you're in the Lynnhaven area, I'd highly recomment checking out Barrett's ... you'll be pleasantly surprised. more
