We sat outside to avoid the musty smell from the bar. The server was attentive and the beer was cold. Pros: bread Cons: food is not fresh

I enjoyed their french toast 1/4/2011

I enjoyed their french toast at breakfast and the desserts I've had are very good as well. I've always wanted to try their burgers but I can never resist the fantastic chicken fried chicken. more

A wonderful breakfast 12/9/2010

Relaxed atmosphere, satisfying breakfast plates, rarely a serious wait, and generous portions at modest prices. more

You can't get better food in South Austin 11/9/2010

I've been eating here for about 5 years. I've liked everything I've tried in that time. Personal faves include the burgers, which are enormous (half pound) and well-prepared and run around $6. Almost the entire breakfast menu is under $6 and the portions are really astounding. Dollar for dollar, you can't get better food in South Austin. Also, the downright weird human potpourri of regulars (myself included) make the bar a fun place to hang out in the evenings. Bring a laptop, get some work done and eavesdrop on conspiracy theorists, all while noshing on the best fried pickles in town. Seriously, try the fried pickles Oh, and the staff. Most of them are funny, friendly people - all worth knowing. Oh, and the owner actually chips in around the place (which is refreshing to see). more

I can't wait to go back here 11/2/2010

I discovered Bakehouse when my sister was in town and I wanted to take her somewhere for brunch that wasn't the norm (Kerbey, Magnolia, etc). Bakehouse surpassed my expectations. I loved the atmosphere - dim lighting, big booths and an international motif. I ordered the La Florentine Omelete, which was amazing. On the side I had fruit (kind of lame - just orange slices and a few grapes) and biscuits, which were hands down the most delicious ones I've ever had - super crumbly, soft, buttery - mmmm! The staff was friendly and the prices were very affordable, especially for the portion size - my breakfast ended up being two meals. I can't wait to go back here and sample some more of their menu! more

A great palace to eat 9/8/2010

Have eaten here a handful of times, but tend to forget about it due to the location (ie: more than a 5 minute drive to a hangover cure). Alas, this popped back on our radar in the last few weeks based on my new mommy friend's craving for their Crab Benedict. (2 monstrous thumbs up from the carnivorous partner, btw). And we since went back this weekend as well! more

Super Friendly 9/3/2010

the servers are always super friendly, and it's open til midnight! how amazing! it's fantastic for the super south austin folks. also, since it's hot as heck out, they are offering snow cones from a little snow cone trailer parked outside with--get this--alcohol in them!!! margarita, pina colada... etc. more

I love this place!! 8/26/2010

Great food, awesome prices and none of the Austin pretentiousness! It is a great place for birthdays or anniversaries but also for no occasion at all. Plus, who doesn't love maps and globes? Maybe my favorite part is the fondue...one of the only places in town that has it. Yum. Also a great place for kids. If you haven't checked this place out I think you'll be pleasantly surprised! more

Wonderfully Weird. Deceivingly Global. Preposterously Affordable. 8/23/2010

So - let me hit the high points here: * American/German/Asian/Frechy...menu- they have it ALL! * Full Bar ($3.50 Doubles, btw) the usual suspect cold ones & a HUGE offbeat selection of Bavarian beers that rivals Whip In! * Quality ingredients and recipes: Yumtastic Pancakes, SUPERIOR Hollandaise sauce, Thick Center Cut Bacon, Super Ripe Avocados, Massive, Delectable Quiches, etc. etc * Attentive, friendly home-style service * and (as the name implies) a whole bakery cabinet of "to go" items for later. If that doesn't getcha...you can get out of here: UNDER $20 for Bloody Mary's and Brunch for two! more

Burgers are good 8/3/2010

Breakfast is great. Burgers are good. International menu is surprisingly good considering the wide selection. more

Great service 7/13/2010

Great service and convienent since its open late. more

Great find. 7/12/2010

We had been looking for German food, and we saw on their street sign that they had it. We were so happy to have found this place. It was GREAT food. Real German food, and big portions. It was a good price too. We've been back three times now and haven't hit a bad thing yet. We like the dining room too. We see people out in the "beer garden" , but we are not outdoorsy people. more

it was the BEST 7/8/2010

I had the chef's salad and it was the BEST! Didn't even need the salad dressing!? more

Good and local! 7/6/2010

A great place. 6/7/2010

A friend turned us on to the place. We have since thanked him profusely! We've lived in Austin a long time and had never heard of The Bakehouse. I guess they don't have to advertise because we know that we are going to tell our friends how great it is. We have been there for breakfast and dinner now. We can't decide which we like better. more

Good atmosphere 5/19/2010

Service was right on time and polite. The overwhelming collection of international foods is what will keep me coming back. Good atmosphere more

I was very pleased. 5/11/2010

I ordered supper from this restaurant via delivery and was very pleased with the food and services. James A. more

Good quality. 5/3/2010

I remember when they opened the Bakehouse. I had a birthday party here. I have seen so many waitresses come and go, but the quality and the comfortable casual feel remains. If you are hungry at breakfast, Carlos' favorite omelette cannot be beat. I do not have to eat again the rest of the day when I order this! From a customer more

Editorial
  • In Short
Upon first glance, the Bakehouse is a place you'd expect to find authentic American comfort food, not the wide array of international dishes the menu offers. But the variety...
