They did an excellent job at diagnosing my unit’s issue. Fair price to fix too, and they came out fast and fixed it on the spot!

Great Plumbing Service 10/26/2011

Very responsive & friendly plumber. I called thinking my washer was backed up because of a clogged drain, but they actually found the plumbing in the wall had deteriorated over time and needed to replace a section of pipe that was twisted and leaking. Great job - very Happy with the service. more

A-1 American the Best 10/18/2011

A-1 Service was Great. The plumber, Jeff Smith arrived on time, was very friendly and well informed in his craft. He assessed the problem informed us of the repair and the costs and proceeded with the work. The manager /inspector arrived on time and was pleasant and well informed. Both indivduals were respectful of my home and cleaned after the work was completed. I would highly recommend them to everyone. more

WARNING! RIPOFF! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! 9/8/2011

Do not believe the 5-star reviews, they are fakes. Don't take my word for it either, look them up at the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU, they have an ""F"" RATING and dozens of unresolved complaints!!!! They came to our house while i was working, right after the hurricane. The A.C. was not working. He made my wife sign an agreement to allow the ""technician"" to make the necessary repairs. It was $150.00 just to show up. He looked at the outside unit, saw ice on it and said it was low on refrigerant, from a leak. Then he went back into the house and started pulling air filters, saying we had the ""wrong kind"" and did my wife want him to install the ""right kind""! My wife said ""no, I want you to find the leak and fix it!"" He then says oh, you have to make an appointment to get the leak checked for $395.00. Then he tells her he could put up to 4 pounds of refrigerant in the system for a flat price of $425.00!!! (You can buy a 30-lb tank of R-22 for $167.00 The company that did fix our problem charged $25.00/ lb for refrigerant.) She then called me at work and I asked the technician why he was price gouging right after the storm and he said he was charging the ""advertised price"". I didn't see that on their BS t.v. commercial! I asked him if he intended on fixing the problem, he said no, you have to make an appointment. I asked him if he knew it was a violation of federal law to put refrigerant into a system that was leaking without fixing the leak. He said he didn't have to listen to that. I told him to get out of my house. On Monday after Irene hit, I called the manager and told him I wanted the $150.00 charge removed from the card since his ""technician"" didn't fix anything, never intended to fix anything, and only came to ripoff my wife. He said he would take it up with his ""quality assurance"" dept. 5 days later he slipped the charge in on our card. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!! more

responded very quickly 9/1/2011

I am so pleased I called A-1. I called and they responded very quickly and came out the same day. My water heater had broken and Tom came out, figured out what was needed and worked until 8:00 pm the same day so I would have hot water before I went to bed. He was so nice and I more

I am grateful I called 8/25/2011

They saved me so much money - I am grateful I called them. I had two different plumbing companies come out to my house and tell me they would have to rip out my newly installed shower and bath and it would cost close to $8,000 to fix and replace. Not only is that money we didn?t have, but we had just gone through the cost and aggravation of a ripped up bathroom when we had it installed a few months earlier. I saw an A-1 American commercial and thought I have nothing to lose by getting one more estimate. They spent 20 minutes assessing the problem and came out of the bathroom saying I had a bent screw. They fixed it in 20 minutes at a tiny fraction of what the other guys said. I haven?t had a problem since. more

Life Saver 8/23/2011

I want to express my sincere appreciation for the work A-1 American did in my house this past July. In particular, I?d like to thank Phil Wiley for his planning, diagnostics and professionalism, and hard work to complete the job. It was one of the hottest days of the year and he worked tirelessly to get my air conditioning and water heater replaced. And when he was finished ? my garage was completely clean. But he went above and beyond. He noticed an opening in the wall of the garage with exposed pipes. He realized it had the potential for a serious carbon monoxide leak and he pointed it out to me. He may have literally saved my life! more

Great Customer Service 8/22/2011

Called on Thursday, set appointment for Friday and the problem was fixed quickly. The Tech Darrell was very good, Great Customer Service Darrell keep up the Great Job. I hope I won't ever need you again ;o) but if I do I will call A-1 American. more

Price gouging, exorbitant prices 3/2/2011

price gouging. Wanted to charge me $ 575 to clean out a kitchen pipe, $ 900 for the whole house. Called another company, charged me only $ 150. I think A1 American is sending their children to Harvard on your dollars. more

Do Not Use This Company!! 1/16/2011

My heat went out this winter and i called A1 american to come out to try and repair it. They looked at the unit for about 5 minutes then told me that all the wires were burned up and the whole unit was completely ruined. They said the only thing i could do is replace the whole system for nearly $6,000..!!! Oh and they charged me $79.00 for this visit that was maybe 10 minutes.. I of course got a sceond opinion of course and the the other company got my heater working within 30 mintues. Oh and the other company told me that the wires were completely fine.. A1 is a bunch of liars!!!! more

DO NOT USE!! 12/19/2010

Don’t use these guys. My 85 year old mother called them after seeing one of their low cost add on the TV for doing a pre-season check on heating systems. After spending less than a half hour in her house they presented her with a $500 bill. The bill had no details of what they did. When I called to get an explanation I was told that they “charged by the job and not by the hour”. They refused to explain what job they performed for the $500. In my opinion these people are dishonest. They appear to prey on the elderly. more

Price Gouged! 9/1/2010

I would not give this company even one point of a single rating star listed above. My AC stopped working the evening before we had the first of our two 105 degree days this summer. Our AC unit is on the roof of our 3 story condo. I escorted the workmen up to the roof. They asked me to go back to my unit and remove the filter from the inside unit. In the time it took me to leave and remove the filter...3 minutes? They had my unit up and running. The diagnosis/solution on the bill stated ""Found Blown Motor Starter"". Well my ""Janitrol"" parts list does not even list a ""Motor Starter"". It does however list ""capacitor"" which I believe was the part replaced on my unit...a one screw snap off/snap on part. Listed Price $39 - $136 depending on unit. What was I charged. $997.50 Now I must admit that it was a Saturday morning (""We charge by the job...not by the hour"") and I was told that there would be a $200 upfront diagnosis fee and that I would only be charged for the part plus their standard labor fee. Well if you do the math that means that $997.50 - $200 (Diagnosis Fee) = $797.50 - $47.50 (.05% debit card processing fee) = $750.00 - ($136 - cost of the MOST expensive capacitor) = $614....That is one heck of an hourly rate. Did I get ripped off? Yea, I think I did but I will let you decide for yourself. I will say this much...I will never be using them again and since I have just been elected to the board of our Condo Association you can bet the word WILL get out. Side Note: The old part was never offered to me...I wonder why? Shame on me. more

Don't Invite Them Into Your Home 7/22/2010

I was a fool for calling only one HVAC company.\r \r Once the technicians found that the fan motor did not work, they gave me the price. I called their office and they gave me a discount. The technicians replaced the motor along with the motor assist and did nothing else to inspect the system. \r \r Because I lost confidence in these people, I called another company to check the rest of the system. It was like day and night when this other company inspected the system. It was brought to my attention that they installed a bigger fan motor than the unit needed. As a result, the greater rpms of the motor produce less efficient cooling. \r \r When I called them on this issue, they stated that they replaced the same H/P motor. At that point, I decided to lick my wounds never to call them again.\r \r While I learned something the hard way, my advise is not to be a Gomer Pyle by getting mixed up with a ""Friendly Freddy"" company like A-1 American. And forget any company that says: God Bless America or has some Jesus fish logo. Pros: Slick commercials. Cons: Extremely high prices. Unprofessional from top to bottom. more

waste of your money 7/11/2010

We called for a clogged secondary line drain. We knew what was wrong with it my husband just didn't have time to get rent a snake from Home Depot that day to do it. They told us it would be $150 just to come out and that money would be added if we had them do the work, The tech came out and after 5 mins said it was going to be $900 just to use a 50ft snake!!! He stated it was because it was a Sunday. They say they are open 7days a week. My husband said no he would just do it himself by going to home Depoit and rent one for $40 a day. Then the tech said he'd do it off the clock for $500. My husband laughed and said no again. As the tech was leaving he gave us his card with his personal cell number and said to call if we ever need anything that he would hook us up. NO WAY!!! Cons: they are over priced and the techs are crooks more

Dishonest! 6/21/2010

My grandmother's Central AC unit was acting up recently. The air that was coming out was cold, but it was barely blowing out of the vents. She called A1 and they sent someone out. They told her she needed a whole new system, new vents, and her housed needed to be remodeled to allow for better efficiency where the air came in! I had her call another company that I had used instead. They came out and all that needed to be done was her coils in the AC unit needed cleaning. They were clogged up with dust and hair (she has pets). They had her unit running great in under an hour. A1 American will never get any business from me. Good job trying to take advantage of an 82 year old woman! Crooks! Pros: None - stay away Cons: dishonest, scammers more

Don't waste your money 12/14/2009

I am active duty Navy and was gone during the Nor'easter in November. My wife emailed me and told me that the heating system went out. She called A-1 American. A technician named Mark was dispatched to my house. He charged my wife $78 and told her she needed to replace the ""Board on the gaspack"" and it would cost $800. My wife waited for me to return, using electric space heaters for her and the kids(We have 4 from ages 9 down to 15 months)to stay warm. I came back today and I checked the system using the owners manual. The troubleshooting guide said the problem was a stuck pressure switch. I thumped it with my finger and now I have heat again. I will replace the pressure. It will cost $21.95 at a local store here in Norfolk, VA. STAY AWAY FROM A-1 American unless you want to part with more money than you can afford. Cons: Yes they are more

Scammers 1/3/2009

I called A1 American on a referral from a friend to come unclog a drain on 1/3/09. They said it would be $150 to come out to look plus repairs, and I agreed. The serviceman came out, looked around for 5 minutes, and then gave me a quote of $975.47 (including the 15% coupon from the phonebook) to snake my drain. I refused the work and he left with the $150.\r \r I next called roto-rooter. They first of all do not charge to come out and give an estimate, so I had them come out. Their serviceman looked around for 5 minutes and quoted $195 for the job, which I accepted.\r \r My complaint against A-1 American is I feel that they never intended to do any work and just wanted the $150 fee for coming out. I say this because of the huge price difference between what the A-1 American serviceman quoted and what the roto-rooter serviceman quoted.\r \r I should have looked up A-1 American online first as they have an F (the lowest) rating. I would not use them ever as I feel they are after the $150 charge to come out, and the friend that referred them is no longer going to use them. more
