Great Los Angeles Secrete! 10/31/2007

I just had one of the best meals I ever had in Los Angeles! The food is fresh, creative, and yummy. We first started off with a lobster bisque. We ordered one because we wanted to share everything and ordered quite a few things to have a nice tasting meal. Our very friendly waitress brought us a second bisque complements from the chef. There goes the idea of not over stuffing myself. But why would I say no to something so yummy that is on the house? 2nd course we had the Sea Urchin scramble eggs with truffles. It was one of the best scrambled eggs I eve had. I think they could had also added some caviar or Salmon eggs (if they wanted to cut down on the cost) to make it more interesting. But I am not complaining! The 3rd course we had was foir gras. I think its one of the best foir gras I had ever had. The great thing about their foir gras is that it doesn't feel too heavy and greasy. It had a smooth fish to it. This dish was our favorite. 4th course we had the veal served with creamy mash potatoes and the veal reduction gravy and a side order of fired eggplant with nasu-miso. The veal melted in my mouth. It was very delicious and the eggplant was very good too. You can tell the chef put a lot of thought in creating these dishes. The combinations sang in perfect harmony! I was already full by the time the 4th course came out and still ate a bit because it was so delicious. Our waitress asked if we wanted to order desert. It was tempting but we passed and asked for or check. She came back with our check and a complimentary desert which was the poach pears. Like I said I was already full before the 4th course and after eating the 4th course I still ate my yummy poach pear. It was semi sweet and perfectly light after all of that food. I don't know how I had room. I would defiantly come here again. Its defiantly a great find. Pros: Everthing Cons: Nothing more

Many great changes 10/16/2007

I remember going to this place when it first opened about a year ago. They offered a menu with 3 separate sections: American, Japanese and French. I wasn't in love with the place, so I didn't go back. My friend who lives near there finally convinced me to give the place a second try about a week ago.\r \r I was pleasantly surprised. The food still has American, Japanese and French influences, but this time they don't try too hard to categorize it. The menu is now a lot smaller, divided into small, large and sides. My friend and ordered to share, splitting the pumpkin soup, the steak frites, the halibut, and the fried eggplant. All dishes were amazing. The steak and the halibut were cooked to perfection, and I couldn't get enough of the pumpkin soup and the truffle fries (came with the steak frites). The wine/beer/sake list is good and has some awesome hard-to-find selections on it. I like that they offer a lot of half-bottles too.\r \r All in all, it seems like the restaurant has made some great strides since it first opened. Love the food, love the wine, and the service is very friendly. I would go back again. Pros: food, wine, parking is easy more

TERRIBLE! 9/21/2007

We should have left five minutes after we arrived! The atmosphere was too bright and too quiet. It felt weird... Then, the menu. The selections were minimal and a little too avant garde... nothing really looked that good. When our over-priced appetizer arrived, there were only 4 very small shrimp. Then, dinner. We both ordered $25 fish entrees. When our dinners arrived, we each had only 4 oz of fish and no side dish! Plus, the fish was way too salty! I felt like we were being cheated... where was our food? We left hungry and upset... DON""T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY! THERE IS A REASON THE PLACE ISN""T FULL ON A FRIDAY NIGHT! Pros: we never have to go back Cons: poor atmosphere, extremely small portions, terrible value more

Pleasantly surprised 8/29/2007

I hope this place gets more business because I had a great experience there. Great food and great service. I got the veal chop and it was wonderful. The wines were great. I will defintely be back. Pros: Great food-Perfect service Cons: No bar more

Something changed at this place, it went from 5 star to 1 star on my list 8/21/2007

This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. Then something happened. They changed their menu and more than doubled their prices. They took out the good stuffs - Miso cod and their eggplant appetizers. the price do not justify the quality of the food, nor the portion that they give you. We used to bring groups of friends there, and celebrated birthdays, anniversaries there. Well, that's not going to happen anymore. What on earth happened??? Pros: No more pros on my book Cons: Too pricey, the food was so so. Portions are small more

never again 7/15/2007

simply put, don't go it's a waste of time and good money. Lets see how long this will last. Something just does not fit here Pros: serve till 11, next to blues club Cons: the restaurant itself more

Great restaurant in Santa Monica 7/12/2007

Went for the first time after receiving a gift certicicate by email last week, I guess my wife had already gone and gave our email... Well I didn't think I could say that but I'm glad she did!\r I had the best meal I had in a long time, I had their River Salmon with some amazing mashed potatoes and roasted tomatoes. We had a great bottle of Reisling and left happy.\r \r Pros: food, wine Cons: no valet more

If you like food, this is the place to go to 6/28/2007

My husband and I love 3. We travel a lot to europe and we love food, this restaurant is truly comparable to restaurants you can find over there. We take our friends there as much as possible, \r The chef is very talented and we really like the diversity of the menu which makes pleasing any friend very easy. The service is professional but not pretentious.\r My husband loves beer and that was one of the reasons we first went there, their beer and wine selection is extensive.\r Their menu changes everyday with seasonal specialities, the servers are always informed on the food and it is very easy to try new things. Their seared foie gras, halibut, lamb chops, mussels, sea urchin scrambled eggs appetizer are some of my favorites, but there is always something interesting to try.\r Bon Appetit!\r \r \r Pros: food food food, warm service and beer and wine list Cons: decor more

BEST IN SANTA MONICA 5/23/2007

My friends told me this place was a must and it is! The food is wonderful. The menu is extremely eclectic with small plates and large. This is a store front restaurant in Santa Monica with a very simple decor. Don't go if you're looking for the million dollar interior design with no interest in good food. This place is very New York with a focus on great food and service. I'll definately be back! Pros: Service,Food,Wine,Beer Cons: No Valet more

disappointed 5/22/2007

I'm a North side business owner and like to take my clients to nice places mostly on the West side. So I'm always looking for somewhere new near the beach. I guess I should have passed this one by instead of dropping $400.00 for dinner for 4. The French service was lacking to say the least. The Sommelier was a little pushy on certain wines and the server wasn?t very informed of the menu. The wine selection was super which made up for the small but pricey portions and odd selections. The decor is bland I felt like we were eating in an empty refrigerator. Although the upstairs adds interest it seems unused. Not the worst I?ve ever been to but definitely not even close to the best. I can?t say I'll be back. Pros: WINES! Cons: Everything else more

stop!!! Before you make a reservation 5/16/2007

Three on Fourth not what I expected. We were excited to go because our friends reccomended it. They said they had a nice time, to order the toro and cod, and that the waitress they had was extremely knowledgable of the food and especially the wine. So you can see why we were so interested in going. Not often you get the complete package. So here it goes NOBODY was there, The accoustics are terrible, Not a place to have a private or even a quiet conversation. First we were greeted by a hostess that seemed she had too many glasses of wine, (only because she had a glass of wine at her host desk), we were promptly seated due to the open tables, breifly had the menu explained to us and greated by our waitress. I'm sorry from here it just turned worse. The waitress had NO idea about the food or wines. They also have sake which my friend wanted, which the waitress had no idea about either all she said was it was ""good"" to everything. We asked what they were known for; she responded to a quiche that was on the menu and some other items, food I would not order esp. for dinner. Where are the side dishes that normally come with your entree? I noticed one entree ranges from $30.00 to $40.00 and you get little on the plate, you have to order your side which puts another $10.00 to $20.00 on your ticket alone. I thought this restaurant was supposed to be more eclecctic than this, but seemed more French than anything with french servers as well. The decore is so not French everything is Gray; which is a little confusing. The whole dinner was confusing all the way down to the menu, everything meshed together. In the end you end up ordering WAY to much and spending a small fortune to leave dis-satisfied with horrible service and a bit like you have been takin advantage of. I know L.A. has pricey restaurants, and I really like dining at them but honestly I want to enjoy the food/service I am paying close to $200.00 for!! Goes under my top 5 worst restaurants in L.A.- Never again! Pros: parking close Cons: food, service, too much $$$ for what you get more

Wow!! Best restaurant in Santa Monica! 3/21/2007

I took my parents to 3 on Fourth last night for dinner after I read all the great reviews on Citysearch, and WOW!! This place is fantastic! I had the sweet-potato fries, a gourmet cheeseburger, and the Maytag blue cheese, honeycomb dessert, all of which were scrumptious! My parents loved their fish dishes, as well. Our waiter Mike was delightful, knowledgeable and highly attentive, and the atmosphere was lovely. Not only will I go back regularly, but I intend to give them a rave review in the magazine for which I write. Now, if they just took the fois gras off the menu, they'd be a PERFECT 10! Comes highly recommended folks. Bon appetit! Pros: Unique & delicious food, Great service, Lovely atmosphere, Parking lot next door Cons: Irresponsibly serve fois gras more

Half price wine night! 3/8/2007

I really like this place the menu ranges across a number of different cuisines, food is above average, the wine list is varied and reasonably priced. Service is acceptable although a little slow on busy nights, the real kicker is Monday nights though, half price wine night, several bottles wind up selling for below retail. Pros: Wine list, varied menu, cheap parking next door Cons: nothing major at this price point more

Bad on so many levels 3/6/2007

1. Acoustics make the restaurant extremely noisy.\r 2. Food was brought out 90 minutes after we ordered - not even the appetizers. The excuse they gave was the kitchen got backed up with orders. The place was about 50% full at the time we ordered (4 of us). \r 3. The kitchen managed to mess up our orders. The tuna/ahi salad is horrendous - 2 big chunks of poor quality tuna in soy sauce and limp salad leaves.\r 4. No valet parking available.\r 5. Terribly overpriced for mediocre food. Entrees ranged from $27-32 and did not include any side dishes. \r \r The service staff was nice, but after waiting so long for the food, we should have be comped something. If the management was better, they would have thought of this.\r \r Pros: in Santa Monica Cons: Food, wait, noise more

Food, Service, Wine***Best in Santa Monica 10/19/2006

I've eaten here close to 15 times. I've never been dissapointed. Simply stated, the food is amazing, the service the best in town and the ambience just plain cool. I hear that they are opening for lunch soon; great news, can't wait! Pros: Service, Food, Wine Cons: Wish they were open for lunch already! more

Nothing to Lose and Everything to Gain for 3 on 4th 8/25/2006

A first date and I decided to not wait for a table at the Boarder Grill. Throwing chance to the wind with nothing to lose, we stumbled across the street and into 3 on 4th. We were first attracted by the small menu and the minimalist chic gray interior that looks like Restoration Hardware done right. Our attraction did not stop there. At first, I was taken aback by the high energy with which the hostess greeted us. This was quickly dismissed. She gave us our choice of tables, pointing out the better one. She quickly let us know her favorites on the menu. The more we talked the closer we felt to her. Excitement about food is contagious. The warm and friendly service continued with our server who allowed us to try a few wines before selecting the perfect one for our meal. She gave us hints on what was best on the menu- reiterated by the hostesses. The menu changes daily so it is good to have the inside track. We followed their recommendations to a t. We chose a combination of tapas and a main course: celery soup with creme fraiche and chantrelles, followed by incredible crispy scallion pancakes topped with dill creme fraiche, smoked salmon and roe, which were pearlescent fireworks in the mouth. We then continued with the big seller, grilled stake with a blackberry and port reduction sauce, which was off that night but still good. Following, a whole white fish stuffed with rosemary and fried. The meat was so tender it fell off the bone. The dessert we were recommended was fresh cherries in a cheesecake-esque tart with a lavender creme fraiche sauce. Cherry juice popped in the mouth. There is everything to gain for 3 on 4th. Soon, we wont be able to get in the door. The self-trained chef is destined to have celebrity status within the next few years. The food, ambiance and service were a perfect setting for a romantic evening. I cant wait to go back, hopefully with the same date. Pros: Serive, daily menu, wine list more

best fries,cod and salad 8/14/2006

This is a great new place there is something for everyone. The small plates are great to share if you can part with any and you get to have alot of variety. The tuna salad was too good to share and the fries you can't stop eating. Tried alot of the dishes on menu nothing we didn't like and even ate dessert the poached pears were delicious.\r The staff is great very accomdating and helpful overall it was a great dinning experience. The decor is great love the big table in the middle inviting for those dinning alone. Great new place will definetly go back. Pros: great food lots of variety more

Best Burger In Town! 8/1/2006

After trying a few really good fish dishes (the cod is really tasty), I decided to try the hamburger that everyone's been talking about. I'm not a big fan of red meat so I wasn't expecting to enjoy it but it was amazing! I've been dreaming of eating another hamburger at Three on Fourth since then. The French cheese, the wild boar bacon, everything about it is just delectable. Great atmosphere, very friendly and knowledgeable staff, it's perfect! more

SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO LA MAG' REVIEW 7/29/2006

I WAS REALLY EXCITED TO CHECK OUT THIS NEW PLACE, CONSIDERING THE PREVIOUS PLACE (ROCCA) BEING SO SUCCESSFUL, HOWEVER, IT WAS A HUGE DISAPOINTMENT. THE CONCEPT IS COOL HAVING THREE DIFFERENT CUISINES BUT IT WAS REALLY DIFFICULT TO FIND SOMETHING I WANTED TO HAVE. WHEN I DID FINALLY ORDER, NOT ALL OF MY FOOD CAME. THE SERVER WAS APOLOGETIC, HOWEVER THEY SEEMED OVERWHELMED. IF IT WERE BUSY THERE, THEN I WOULD UNDERSTAND OVERSIGHT, BUT IT WAS DURING THE WEEKEND AND THE PLACE WAS QUIET, WITH A FEW TABLES, AND LACKED OVERALL ATMOSPHERE. I MAY BE MISTAKEN BUT I THOUGHT I SAW A MEMBER OF THE KITCHEN STAFF SMOKING OUT FRONT, LATE IN THE EVENING, WHEN WE WERE LEAVING, SANITARY? I FELT THAT HEAVY DISHES OUTWEIGHED HEALTHY, OPTIONS WERE LIMITED FOR HEALTH CONSCIOUS DINERS, AND THE CONCEPTS SEEMED TO BE ITEMS THAT ARE ALOMST COPIED VERBATEM FROM OTHER MENUS, WHETHER JAPANESE OR FRENCH. IF I WANTED SUSHI, I WOULD GO TO A SUSHI RESTAURANT. MAYBE THEY SHOULD JUST SERVE THEIR BURGER, IT SEEMED TO BE THE SAFEST OPTION. THE MUSIC NEXT DOOR WAS LOUD AND VIBRATED THROUGH THE WALLS, AND DISTRACTED CONVERSATION AND OVERALL EXPERIENCE. I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO THE LA MAG' REVIEW AND NOT WASTED MY TIME OR MONEY. IT JUST SEEMS LIKE THEY ARE AMATEURS. Pros: FRIENDLY STAFF Cons: FOOD, VALET, AMBIENCE more

This place really Cooks! 7/11/2006

According to the hostess, they haven't even had their grand opening yet - I am so glad I found this place NOW because when they do put their name out there this place is going to EXPLODE!\r Really impressive menu - french bistro classics (but up-dated and with a twist - Moules in a Geuze Beer sauce, for example, was delicious) & Steak Frites (Sauce Brune- mmm!) - choice of 2 cuts. \r 5 friends and I came across this place by accident last Saturday (tired of our standard haunts) and were seated at the marble high table in the centre of the action - it got busy after 9pm so we lucked-out with our seats.\r We ordered just a couple of things to start - Mac and Cheese and Sweet Potato Fries from the ""American Classics"" page, with our various wines and really inventive list of beers - after they arrived and we tucked in, we quickly ordered just about everything on the menu! Mac & cheese was awesome - 3 types of cheese and loads of pancetta w/ farfalle macaroni plus a great crispy top - the way it's meant to be!\r Smoked Salmon over vegetable pancake with Creme Fraiche and Ikura was easily the winner in our group - but others enjoyed the Crab Cakes (were those really pieces of walnut inside?!? next time I'll ask - but it really worked) and Chicken Wings with Blue Cheese sauce and hot sauce on the same plate - cut creatively so that they can be eaten without sauce dripping! Fries were so very good - pleased to see house-made mayonnaise served alongside; belgian-style!\r Main plates were equally satisfying - the burger was gargantuan - but everybody finished - great cheeses inside plus arugula and caramelized onions (really caramelized - no short cuts here!) The Halibut special was in a sublime potatoe puree tempered with truffle oil - please put this back on the specials menu!\r Clafoutis astounded, figs not sweet enough, cabernet sorbet a delight - we stayed over 2.5 hours (wish the music had been a little louder) and check was less than expected! Pros: Great menu, friendly staff, relaxed & informal atmosphere Cons: Expand the menu please! more
