Nice Happy Hour Menu 10/7/2010

We went with a bunch of friends for happy hour. Prices were good. Items as cheap as $1 and going up to $10 for a huge gourmet burger. Kind of crazy when it came to the table. Serious cocktail list but we stuck to the happy hour drinks which were tasty. The obvious seriousness behind the bar seemed to translate into waiting for our drinks a little longer than expected but worth it. My drink came with a chunk of ice in it that looked like it was chipped off an ice block. Pretty cool. The place is laid back. Waiter was nice. No complaints. I'm going back to try the dinner menu. Looked like good, comfort food. more

My Second Time.... 10/3/2010

Last night was my second time to 23Hoyt. It was good before, but it was very good last night. We had two flatbreads to start and then I had the most delicious fresh pasta I've ever had in Portland. I've had better elsewhere but not in this city. My companion enjoyed a chicken entree and although didn't knock her socks off like my pasta dish, she enjoyed it very much. Service was great. A very friendly gentleman checked on our table a number of times. He must have been the manager. This place would have gotten a B the last time we were in but last night definitely an A. Not too expensive, cocktail list is interesting. Bartender was very friendly. Music in bathrooms oddly loud. more

Good food, terrible service 7/11/2010

I went with a friend and we each ordered one drink...it took 15-20 minutes to get our drinks and they messed one drink up. We ordered olives and fried green beans, our olives were brought to us 20 minutes after our drinks and they brought us fried onions (wrong again). We let them know and 15 minutes later when our beans were still not there we asked to cancel that order. Did I mention that the place was dead? There was literally 5 tables of people. Overall, our waitress rarely checked in and messed up both orders. I will not go back. Pros: Cheap happy hour food Cons: Slow service more

Nice experience 3/20/2010

Reasonably priced entrees, great cocktails and excellent service. The Happy Hour menu looks good; I will be back soon. Pros: Nice ambience, genuine service. Cons: Parking behind the restaurant was very expensive. more

Great Happy Hour 1/24/2010

We love 23Hoyt. They just changed their menu again! And all of the new items are even better than before. The happy hour menu is bigger and better. We usually come in for happy hour and stay for dinner. The dinner menu is reasonably priced with fantastic dishes. The drinks are inventive yet still classic. 23Hoyt is bar far our favorite place to dine! See you there! Pros: Best happy hour in town more

Great food and Service 1/4/2010

23Hoyt is an upscale place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. The happy hour menu is outstanding. The dinner prices and menu items are reasonable and exciting. One of our favorite spots for drinks and food! Pros: Best place in NW for happy hour and dinner more

Good service, horrible menu/food 12/17/2009

Not impressed with food. Lack of vegetarian dish. Backup is usually fish for me. Choice of Ahi sandwich or Cod fish and chips...Just not impressed. I settled for the waiter's suggestion of Mac and Cheese without the bacon, which is a good dish, but not a very creative solution. No veggies at all came with it. The guy next to me, who had a steak, had more greens with his dish. I have no patience for establishments that don't have a vegetarian alternative, especially in a large, progressive community such as Portland. The waiter was very good, and took care of our group of 10+ very well. Food delivery was prompt. The entire place was very clean. Overall, I'd give 3 stars, just don't expect healthy food. Pros: Excellent service Cons: Horrible menu lacks creativity more

Good Food Fun Time 11/16/2009

Liked this place a lot. Good menu and nice waiters. Upscale feel but down to earth everything else. Pros: You can get a pitcher of beer! more

Sunday Dinner 11/15/2009

I love comfort food and the menu was full of my favorites. I settled on the fish and chips which were perfectly cooked and the fries were better than McDonalds! I know, not much of a reference but they really were that satisfying. So many restaurants try to do their own fries and so often you get a limp and greasy mess you have to pick through for some good bites. You have to try the fries. Salty and good! The room was nice and warm as was our waiter. Just a nice solid place. Almost forgot, you can get a huge mug of beer. I couldn't believe the size of it when it came to the table. Pros: food more

We had a wonderful night.. 11/13/2009

We sat upstairs with our children who are both toddlers. We were at a perfect table away from other patrons so that the children could be free to express themselves (be loud) without bothering others. We could look down on the restaurant from our table. It was busy and fun to watch people. I had the wedge salad with blue cheese dressing which was delicious and the roasted chicken which was also superb. The kids had pasta. The kitchen made them something specifically to their liking. It was a good night with the family and we had no complaints except for parking. We had to park a block away and walk. It wasn't pouring rain so that was fine. We'll be back in any case. Pros: Wedge Salad Cons: Parking more

Less than satisfying.... 11/13/2009

We made a reservation for 8 and were seated promptly upon arrival. The wait staff overall was very polite, and the drinks and appetizers were fine. After we finished our appetizers, however, we had to wait for OVER ONE HOUR for our food. Moreover, each dish had its own problem... and we ordered EIGHT of them, mind you. My burger was burnt and dry, someone else's rib eye was undercooked. The lamb shanks and arugula were too salty. Filet mignon was lukewarm and bland. I'd go on, but you get the picture. I think they need to spend less time with image and presentation and pay more attention to the execution of the main dishes themselves. Overall disappointing and not sure I'd want to try it again for over $35 per person. Pros: Good ambience Cons: Entree lacks execution; long wait for food more

Too bad... 10/29/2009

The menu feels like putting on a formal gown to go to a wal-mart. 4 deep fried dishes and deviled eggs? The concept is a corrupt and retarded brainchild of a man with too much money and not enough taste. It's as if he accidentally dipped a fish stick in caviar and then built a restaurant. A total waste. Pros: Front of house staff Cons: Overall concept is ridiculous more

Great food and nice ambience 10/25/2009

My wife and I ate here on Oct 24, Sat. We were encouraged by citysearch reviews but were a little confused by the menu - a mix of fine dining items and some bar food items. We were seated upstairs away from the crowd downstairs - the music was a little loud but the food and service were excellent. Good wine selection. I had the sable fish - melted in your mouth and my wife had the steak. Great date night....would come back again. Pros: Great food, good ambience, great service Cons: Music too loud more

Friday lunch 9/1/2009

Had lunch with friends on a Friday afternoon. After being seated, it took several minutes for one of the two servers to ask if I wanted a beverage while waiting for my other friends to arrive. After they all did, it was another several minutes before she came to take our order. My food-mac and cheese was only ok. Quite dry with big hunks of unmelted cheese-no creaminess at all. Friend said her tuna salad was good, but tuna was cooked well done, as was the ahi on the sandwich of my other friend. Server indicated it was cooked rare and seared only on the outside-not the case. The caesar salad (listed on menu as Zefiro's) was the most disappointing after having it at both Zefiro and the previous incarnation of 23Hoyt. Limp lettuce, a few croutons and too much dressing, no parmesan at all. Overall, I was quite disappointed. I had been here before the menu changed and it was outstanding. The new head chef was there, so I am not sure why the food wasn't better. The last thing was that both bathrooms were out of soap-was the lunch rush that big that they were out at 1:00? I hope they can work out the lackluster service and food-I would like to see them stick around. Pros: plenty of seats available Cons: service and food only ok more

NoPo Special 5/17/2009

Recently went for first time visit to 23 Hoyt. Food was spectacular, high quality, nice proportions, and tasty. We had the whole gamet of courses: Appetizers, Oysters on Half Shell with Minonette, and the Scallops with mushrooms, in which they were seared perfect. Salad course we had the Ahi Salad and the Beet Salad. Ahi was thinly sliced and everything comlimented the Ahi, wish there was a little more green apple served with Beet Salad, but that is being very picky; it was delicous. For entrees we had the Steelhead which was nice and moist and the Halibut which melted in your mouth. For dessert we shared the coconut cake which was delicate and a nice Tawny Port with a small serving of vanilla bean ice cream that the kitchen provided as a special treat upon request, which brought out the caramel in the tawny port. GREAT EVENING!!! Pros: Excellent Quality Food, Great Atmosphere Cons: Pricey, but Great Quality Ingredients. more

love the food! 4/16/2009

I just went in to 23Hoyt and realized that Portland could be missing out on the best food in town. I mean, we were there for an early dinner, and it was pretty busy, but there should be a line out the door! I'm always amazed. High quality/ amazing favor. Why doesn't everyone know this?\r And it definitely helps that the service is always great! Pros: best scallops ever more

Under The Radar 1/29/2009

For such a great place, it seems to live under the radar. I always get a great table. I have never had a problem getting in. I love the food and service. I wonder when the masses are going to discover this place. The atmosphere is lovely. It is one of my better finds. Pros: Food, Service, Room more

New to the Hood 1/1/2009

I just moved into The Westerly and so happy to have a neighborhood restaurant I like this much. The bar is really comfy and the happy hour and bar menu are inexpensive with good choices. I like their burger quite a bit and after a couple of drinks I can just walk home. I am going to try JoBar next. I just love the Northwest neighborhood. You can walk everywhere. Pros: Burger, in my neighborhood more

New Year's Eve 1/1/2009

We had a great time. It was hard to get a reservation but they had a no cancellation policy for the night and a $25 cancellation fee if one did, but after being told that this policy was only for New Year's Eve due to its craziness and the restaurant often receiving ""no shows"" on New Year's Eve's of the past, we found it acceptable and understandable, but it always bothers me to be asked for a credit card to secure a restaurant reservation. I have experienced this at New York restaurants but not in Portland. In any case, the food was delicious, the room was nice and the evening overall was very pleasant. I would recommend this restaurant to friends, but choose somewhere else to go on major holidays if you don't want to be bothered with the strict reservation policies. Try the chicken dish. It was heavenly. Pros: Food, Service, Room and Music Cons: Strict holiday reservation policy more

My how we write our REVIEWS!!!!!!!!! 12/30/2008

I was there the other night, and while it is a good restaurant I wonder who is writing these incredible reviews. I like the atmosphere but found the service and food to be , well, just OK. I would guess that the staff is hard at work making sure that you do not see them for what they are.by continuing to write these reviews. I might suggest that you spend your spare time learning the menu and service. Should I put !!!!! behind everything?\r Trout & steak are great items to order by the way. & have a drink in the bar Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: Parking more
