What a hard review to write... My now 20 year old son was charged with statutory rape a year ago for having consensual relations with a girl who was 17 years 9 months! They did not have ""intercourse""! Her father, an evangelical Christian walked in on them, the police were called and charges were filed. A year later, we are just closing this chapter. This has been, by far, the most difficult thing our family has ever faced. We were so concerned he would go to jail and be registered as a sex offender. This has cost us a considerable amount of money, embarassment and stress. Our home is in a different state and to think of our straight A child (having a 3.7 gpa at an out of state university) having to face this alone was almost too much. Thankfully, his advisor contacted us and helped us find Bob Meyers with Jim Newton Law. He made us feel at ease and allowed us to breathe while he dealt with the legal aspects of the case. We were kept informed every step of the way. He was able to plea bargain the case and our son (although counseling will need to be completed) will not be registered as a sex offender and can move forward with his life. It still infuriates me that this happened and that the state can get away with something like this. In my opinion, this case should have been dropped immediately!
