Go for the beers, not the service 9/29/2005

I've loved this restaurant since my first visit to D.C. years ago. The selection of beer (over 500 on the menu, I believe) is amazing, and I love being able to try so many beers that I'd never dreamed existed in my Midwestern upbringing. I think I'm overly sentimental about the place, because there are several aspects I really should give more weight to. 1. The service is pretty consistently horrendous. I've been there countless times and every server I've had seems to want to be somewhere else. They're not necessarily rude, but it will take a while to get your next beer, and they will forget things you've asked for (water, a fork without food bits on it, napkins, ketchup) 2. The food's not that great. If you make a meal of the cheese board and spinach and artichoke dip, you'll do OK. Definitely don't get the pizza. Your middle-school cafeteria did better than they do. 3. The tables are pretty much right on top of each other, and servers/hosts don't tend to want to accommodate requests to move. If you're in a party of two, don't ask for one of the slightly bigger tables with four chairs around it. It won't happen. 4. It's kind of dirty. The women's bathroom is covered in graffiti. 5. They're out of a lot of the beers on their menu quite often, so be prepared with a backup choice (or three). All that said, I do still love the place, and go back as often as I can. I would still highly recommend it to anyone. It's a great place to take out of town guests. more
