The Sun Tavern could be a great restaurant and it's hard to figure out why it isn't. It's a wonderful old building on a pretty property. It has a fun history. It's perfectly quaint and cozy inside. Some dishes are fabulous. But for every good dish, there's a mediocre one. We have eaten at Sun Tavern off and on for over 20 years, including many times during the present ownership. This past week, my wife had a Caeser salad that was perfect and a coconut shrimp that was heavy with oil. My calamari was good, although sligthly overcooked. My wife's squash ravioli with chicken was perfect but my seafood jambalya was a gluey mess with horribly overcooked mussels. This situation is pretty typical at Sun Tavern. No one asked if we liked our food during the meal. Finally, it is very odd that the owner who is very present rarely visits the tables. Perhaps he is happy with running a pretty good place and doesn't want to know that it could better.
