All the U-Haul trucks I have ever rented had problems (busted A/C to complete engine failure), which is not so nice for a half-continent move. Maybe OK for a local move. If you are already committed (perhaps they were the only ones with trucks), make sure it isn't on its last legs before you load it--definitely take it up to highway speeds for a mile or two. No A/C is hellish in the South; no radio for 2000 miles is pretty punishing, too.
The trailers do not have room for a cute graphic portraying various American destinations, but they do have room for a joke: ""45 mph maximum speed limit"".
