I brought my car in after losing the power steering to find that the shaft in the pump had broken. After replacing the pump, there was still something wrong and they decided that it was the rack that needed replacing (the bill was now around $1100). But after the rack was replaced, there was still something wrong and they realized that the valve in the replacement pump was defective, so they replaced the replacement pump (under warranty) and left the new rack in but removed the charge from the bill (which ended up at $500). He could have easily kept the $1100 without telling me that the new rack was not necessary, but he didn't.
