"Root canal" is used as comparison for any bad experience one has, like "the job interview was like having a root canal." The root canal with Dr Vellequette was probably as good as a root canal can be. Yes I sat in the chair for an hour plus as he filled my mouth with all kinds of gadgets and ground away on my tooth which had been painful for weeks after I broke the crown. But he did explain clearly what was being done and why. And when it was all over, no more pain in my tooth, yea!
