love, hate, and frozen custard 5/25/2010

When a friend and I found scooter's, I met my first ""frenemy"". I don't recall ever having a frenemy (an enemy disguised as a friend) before- at least not one i was aware of. Scooter's feels like a friend- I think it's Chicago's ONLY frozen custard shop. Being from Wisconsin, I grew up with frozen custard (the creamy, light, treat ice cream wishes it could be.) (By ""light"", I mean texture, not calorie content.) Thus I was delighted and struck with nostalgia upon our first trip to Scooter's. When I tasted my first ""concrete"" (a DQ Blizzard-like mix of custard and any topping you can imagine) (my favorites typically incorporate marshmallow sauce, peanut butter cups, and cookie dough), i knew I'd be spending a lot of time with Scooter's, my new friend. Soon I became completely addicted so that I can overindulge in custard one day, feel quite guilty (see my ridiculous topping choices above), then return the next as if enormous frozen custard treats were essential to life. Therefore, frenemy. But a well-disguised enemy. I can't summon a complaint about scooter's actual products....there are unique and delicious flavors of the day, a wide range of toppings that are generously administered, a friendly group of employees, and a cozy neighborhood-y feel. On second thought, maybe Scooter's is a true friend, and I (and the gluttonous toppings I prefer) am my own enemy... Pros: the tasty custard Cons: really, none more
