Great stable, enthusiastic trainers 10/8/2008

I have been taking lessons at Doubletake Equestrian for a few months now. I absolutely recommend them to anyone who is looking to get started with riding, or improve on existing skills, or stable a beloved companion. A few items about them, listed at random: easy parking, a great view of the mountains while riding, shady barns with comfy chairs to sit and watch, large stalls with automatic watering systems, regular feeding, several arenas for turnouts and two for jumping. One of the many things I like about Doubletake is that the trainers really want you to bond with the horse; you are encouraged to take charge of all grooming, tacking up, cooling down, hosing off, etc. They will be standing there to help you when you need it, but the goal is to make you as confident & independent as you want to be. The schooling horses are worked enough so that they are dependable, but not enough to keep them from being spirited and responsive. Let me address the remark that another reviewer made regarding the disorganization. From my experience, when you are working with horses, it is impossible to always stick to a timetable. Horses have good days and bad, just like people. Sometimes it takes longer to tack up, or maybe a rider is finally ready to jump- but the hour is up. The trainers at Doubletake give the horses and riders the benefit of their understanding. Sometimes lessons run over and the next lesson has to wait; this does happen occasionally. But, that rider will have gotten the extra ten minutes she needed and will go home exhilarated, having accomplished her first jump. For the most part, I find that my lessons are on time; and the times I've had to wait, well, the ride has been more than worth it. The enthusiasm that the trainers have for riding is contagious. They will be sure to point out even the minor technicalities of riding while keeping you positive & proud of your accomplishments. Anyone who is serious about their love for horses will be happy at Doubletake. Pros: Enthusiastic trainers; real chance to bond w/horses; guaranteed concern & care for the animals Cons: E Old Vail isn't paved yet; not always strictly on time more
