New chef comes up short 10/13/2008

09/08 This establishment is one of those video poker bars offering exceptional food. We were seated in a separate wood paneled dining room adorned with posters of cartoons featuring martinis. We passed on drinks and ordered grilled lamb chops (3) marinated for 24 hours in a delicious balsamic-based marinade. Our entrees were served over horseradish mashed potatoes and included grilled spinach and a vegetable mix of baby carrots and snow peas. Service was satisfactory. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 09/08 breakfast -my wife ordered a coffee and almond crusted French toast ? a croissant dipped in vanilla rum flavored batter, topped with pastry cream and raspberry sauce and served with maple syrup. Not to be outdone, I ordered a large OJ and eggs Florentine ? poached eggs over spinach on top of an English muffin and topped with Hollandaise sauce. My dish was accompanied by country grilled potatoes. Both dishes were outstanding. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12/09 revisit: Former Top Chef Gene Villiatora serves as executive chef. My wife ordered blackened Ahi tuna with a Creole mustard butter. The tuna was gray, not blackened, and visually unappealing, overcooked, tough and flavorless. In contrast, my grilled Pacific salmon glazed with white miso and pineapple was delicious. Our entrees came with bok choy and sticky rice covered with black sesame seeds that were pleasing to the eye, but both were served near room temperature. Pros: New innovative menu Cons: Poor execution more
