Best coffee shop in Nashville 1/8/2007

I happened to find myself in Nashville for a long weekend visit and had spent time in several other coffee shops when a local resident (third year radiology resident at that) pointed out JJ's near Vanderbilt University as ""a great coffee shop where you can also get a beer."" I checked it out, and from the outside, it just looks like a convenience store, and even still resembles one when you first step inside. However, when you walk past the convenience store part of the store and behind it is a 25 by 120 ' square space with coaches, chairs, persian carpets, brick walls and a velvet curtain at the far end with nice low classical playing and free wireless internet. There are 15 tables, numerous chairs, two coaches and computers set up for the non-laptop toting to access the internet as well. They also serve lunch, salads and sandwiches, and the propietors are extremely friendly. I've spent the entire day here while my wife is at Vanderbilt and I've tried many of their drinks, including a Rogue Chocolate Stout from their freezer and two espresso creations, all equally delicious. They also sell cigars, tea, fine chocolates (european fine cacoa), and the list of beers is truly impressive as well as 4 tap beers, Yazoo featured prominently (local brewery). Just down Broadway from Vanderbilt on 21st, it is less than half a mile from the school and truly a gem, I recommend it to everyone. I couldn't think of a nicer place to spend 7 hours. Pros: GREAT coffee shop ,proximity to Vanderbilt (< 1/2 mile), beer selection, drink selection, ample seating, environment, good coffee, free wireless Cons: almost non-descript from the street - you have to KNOW it is here. more
