Good Greek 10/22/2006

Gyros is a good, if not mind-blowing, Greek joint right behind the iconic Frontier on Central, across from the UNM bookstore. It is a favorite of student due to its fair prices, small menu and simple fare. This place won't leave you in the bemused state of bliss that a perfectly made gyro has been known to produce, but it is good-the portions are generous and the food is a tad more sophisticated that greasy diner fare (but then, I like greasy diner fare). I had the gyros combo-the gyro was huge and hot, the tzatziki sauce perfect and the lamb and pork exactly as it should be. The only caveat? The pita got a tad soggy in its aluminum wrapper-but, let's be honest, I'm a college student, not Gael Greene, and it didn't bother me all that much. However, I am kind of a hummus fiend and even though the hummus had that gloopy thick texture that I prefer, it could have had a more pronounced tahini jolt. Anyway, I loved the chips. Rather than coming out of a Lay's Potato Chip bag, they were fresh thin slices of potato fried to crispness-very satisfying, very unusual (in the best way). The price was more than reasonable for the amount of food I got, and I would definately go there again if I found myself with a few extra bucks and a free Anthropology period. It won't knock your socks off, but it will make you smile. Pros: Inexpensive, great location for students, big portions more
