Across the street from Zuni's caf, Flax Art & Design is filled with rows of Chinese calligraphy brushes, stationary in every color (including clear), modeling kits, children's toys, leather notebooks, framing materials, handmade paper, and of course paint and ink and paint and ink. It's a large warehouse that stretches out into at least three rooms. Flax's competitors Utrecht and Pearl are cheaper all round, but Flax has a very personal feeling and carries more exotic materials.
