The pizza at Tomatoes Apizza will be more familiar to East Coast diners or those who have actually eaten the real thing in Italy. Chicago deep-dish it ain't. Think very thin crust that has a flavor and texture all its own. The ingredients are straight-foward (cheese, tomoatoes, basil, garlic) and the pizzas are a tribute to a heritage of simple, hearty elemental flavors. Try a red and a white. There are special pizzas served every month. No other Detroit pizzeria does it quite this way and you're unlikely to get pizza like this anywhere else in the Midwest. The restaurant is pretty spare so take-out and use your own candles and red-white checked tablecloth. Mangia!
Pros: traditional pizza, inexpensive, quality ingredients
Cons: interior restaurant
