Very good Jesuit HS 8/3/2005

A fairly rigorous competitive Jesuit all-boys high school in the Bronx. May be moving to Westchester. Applicants must take Catholic COOP test and have excellent grades but you don't have to be Catholic. All freshmen take Greek or Latin. A well balanced academic education. Students are required to take a minimum number of courses in English(4), foreign language(4) math (3), science with lab(3), social studies(3) as well as religion(4). Forensics is offered in senior year. Strictly enforced dress code -jacket/tie/shirt/dress khakis, dress shoes. Rather rigorous in terms of discipline - students get detention points for lateness, not buttoning their collar, talking in class, etc. which can lead to suspension. Each grade has a Service requirement. Juniors go on an overnight retreat. Seniors must put in 70 hrs volunteer work offsite aside from classes. A good match if your teen comes from Catholic middle school background, students from public school may have a more difficult transition. Discipline/Counseling/Academics are not well integrated. Some financial aid available but tuition is steep at about $10,000 plus cost of books, etc. more
