Editorial review from Citysearch 9/5/2013

Excellent food, although the interior could use some help. The space kind of feels like an Alice in Wonderland setting, without it trying to be that. I paid just about $60 for a good meal, though :) Great sake! more

great place for a romantic outing more

Amazing food. Mazing interior. 9/12/2010

Great food! I've had my fair share of modern Japanese and this spot delivers. The atmosphere was pretty nice but had a bit lacking, which it tries to make up for with a crazy scheme of mirrors. If you're into being lost when you're just five feet from your table then hey, that's a good thing. Despite the confusing mirrors this will likely be my go-to for modern Japanese food for the foreseeable future. Another review here claimed the pre-fix was $29/per person including sake but it is $55 per person not including sake. more

Possibly the Most Romantic Restaurant in the City 5/18/2010

This is undoubtedly my favorite modern Japanese brasserie (that don’t serve sushi), and in my opinion, one of the most romantic restaurants in the city! Not only is it an adventure getting to this somewhat hidden spot, once you enter the unmarked wooden doors, the zen and intimate décor will make you feel like you’re no longer in the city. If you’re planning to come here, make sure that your date is someone whom you really like since you’ll be ushered to private booths where there will be no people or food watching (choose the ones on the ground level that have glass ceilings so you may see the stars in the sky!). It’s just you and your date and an occasional cute ‘excuse me’ before the waiter opens the little curtain to your booth! My party had the BBE $29 fixe prix menu, which was such a wonderful deal since it also came with a flight of sake! I never used to be a fan of sakes but am lately experimenting with it a lot more and am acquiring a better taste of it. We started off with a delightful sashimi amuse bouche. Our first course was Tuna Sashimi with Green Yuzu Sauce. I picked the Grilled Black Cod as my entrée, which I absolutely devoured while someone commented that the Grilled Salmon dish was better. The entrees were served with miso soup and rice. The sake’s complimented the courses very well and is successfully easing me into the sake world. For desserts, we tried the frozen black sesame mousse (interesting but not extraordinary) and matcha (powdered green tea) and blueberry cheesecake, which was phenomenal. Maybe it was the great company (I had friends visiting from Philly – yes, it was not a date this time) or the super reasonable price point, but I just can’t say enough good things about this brasserie. I don’t usually visit the same establishment more than once, what more twice, but I’ll come to Zenkichi anytime for a quiet, unhurried and memorable dinner. Pros: Perfect date place, excellent food, decor and ambiance Cons: It's in Williamsburg, but hey it's really not that bad!! more

This place doesn't make any sense 4/19/2010

Just want to warn you all - don't waste your time and money. This place has totally weird decor, stairs going up with mirrored walls - I am surprised how no one yet broke their head or fall off the stairs - mirrored walls make you dizzy and delusional...This place is not inviting and the food is totally weird. The concept of japanese tapas is newly created and clearly doesn't work. The food they serve is not comforting, not appetizing and uncooked. \r Go to japanese sushi place or Spanish tapas place - this creation in Williamsburg is a misstake.\r Cons: Dangeon Decor/Terrible uncooked/weird food more

Food is Close to Average, Great Ambiance 10/1/2009

Zenkichi has the potential to be really good, but when you're a high priced Japanese restaurant, I think it is imperative that your menu be explanatory or your waitstaff is well equipped to answer all questions. Zenkichi does not allow modification of the Prix Fixe menu which means if you have any allergens or are vegeterian, you should not have the Prix Fixe. What was supposed to be a relaxing dinner turned into deciphering the menu myself. The restaurant itself was beautiful. 50% of the food was very good. Do not order the asparagus, it is a slight disappointment. If you are going for ambiance, definitely go here. If you are looking for a good meal to satiate your hunger, I would suggest going to another restaurant. As a result, Zenkichi is overpriced because service is not as good as it should be. They are friendly, but once again, there is a language issue. Pros: Ambiance Cons: Limited English of Staff more

short and sweet 9/15/2009

seating is great:it's romantic, cozy and private. The boths are not as small as some of the reviews make them out to look they're perfect for 2 people.\r The service was extremely fast and attentive(thanks to the service button on your table) but I barely understood 1 word when the waiter took our order.\r The food was ok and fair nothing to go crazy.\r over.\r \r Over all the looks of the place exceeds the actual meals. So what you really end up paying for is the restaurant not the food. Will prob. not return but it is a great dinning experience to try atleast once. more

Good Food 3/24/2009

I went here with my boyfriend for our anniversary. The food was great and tasty, but the sitting space was too small, I don't like being cramp in a corner. Over all it was a very nice romantic place . I would recommend to ask for a bigger sitting area when you make a reservation (if possible) Pros: Great food Cons: Space is a bit small more

Got a date? Go here! 1/12/2009

Every time I have a special occasion with my boyfriend I have a hard time going anywhere else. It is so romantic. Its dark, and cozy.. there is always jazz music playing when we go. Most of the booths allow you to sit next to eachother without looking like 'that' couple. The food is all shared so we get to order together and eat together. I've enjoyed 99% of the dishes we've ordered with the only exceptions being the occasional too-authentic-for-me dish (I'm a daring eater but not THAT daring). Once you try it for a special occasion beware.. you can't stop! You'll be ther for every anniversary, birthday, valentines day... Pros: Great atmosphere, service, food Cons: small portions you do need to order a lot more

different world 9/17/2008

Great food, great atmosphere, great service. It's like stepping into a different world (or country). My favorites were the Assorted Seafood Tempura, the Kabocha Manju. If someone wants to take me to Zenkichi, I'd definitely go again. more

wow! 9/6/2008

this place is so cool...you walk in and it's like a maze of dim light and bamboo and mirrors...we got a private booth with a button to press to summon our waiter...really unusual and delicious Japanese food (no sushi)...\r really romantic and exotic. Pros: ambience, food Cons: can't think of any more

My favorite restaurant ever! 8/25/2008

I took my boyfriend here a few weeks ago for a surprise celebration dinner. I was worried he would not find anything to eat considering he is a pretty plain guy. He not only found something to eat, but also agreed that it was one on the best and coolest restaurants he has ever been to! The private booths, excellent and quick service, food, saki and beer selections-what else could you ask for? You must go, it'll be an experience you won't forget! Pros: Private booths, On-call service, Romantic Cons: Nothing! more

Don't expect much 4/19/2008

I was taken there by a friend of mine, he praised this place a lot due to reviews, 5 star??? come on !!! regular place with regular food. If I were you I wouldnt expect much. more

Great dining experience 4/17/2008

This place is great for a date or a group. Ambiance and food is very good, it's reasonably priced for a nicer dining experience. Had the Omakase for two last night. Stand outs were the Maguro and Snapper carpaccio, the tiger prawn with daikon! so good!, and the black sesame mousse. Flavors of dishes are subtle which may turn off a few. We opted for the rock fish instead of the tsukune chicken which I regretted. I would recommend ordering something off of the a la carte menu in addition to Omakase, we were still a little bit hungry. Wednesday night was a great night to go as it wasn't very crowded and they were able to accomodate us without a reservation. Prompt and friendly service. You may not be totally wowed by the food but overall it's a nice experience. Another neighborhood gem of the same vein is Bozu on Grand St. Sushi options there as well. It's a little less 007, though. Pros: ambience, staff, food Cons: they need more lower priced sakes on the menu, dessert more

Pretty Disappointing 4/16/2008

I took my boyfriend here for a romantic dinner one night after reading all the great reviews of both the food and the atmosphere. We opted to order about 5-6 dishes to share and I wasn't very impressed with any of it The pork belly was so fatty that there were maybe three bites of actual meat in the dish. The black cod (which I was so excited to order because so many people had raved about it) was slimy, off-tasting, and undercooked. The salted chicken was very tasty but dry- if I want dry chicken, then I'll just stay home and cook it myself! And everything smelt and tasted overwhelmingly fishy. Not a problem when you're eating fish, but fishy pork belly? Fishy creme brulee? No thanks.\r And to top it all off, the atmosphere did not live up to our expectations at all! We were crammed in a tiny two-person booth that was extremely uncomfortable and for some reason freezing cold. I don't know where other people have been seated that is so romantic and private, but there's no way any hanky-panky could have occurred in our booth. We were just inches away from another couple and our screen was almost entirely see-through.\r All in all, a very disappointing experience. Not worth traveling from UWS to Brooklyn for, that's for sure. Pros: Right next door to a bar that sells $2 PBR Cons: Doesn't live up to expectations/reviews more

Great evening overall 4/14/2008

We were a party of 4 and we went into our own ""private"" booth with a curtain and a buzzer to call your waiter when ready to order. Authentic environment with dark wood and bamboo everywhere. \r The food was delicious - though the pork dish recommended was not our favorite. The Cod was amazing as well as the chicken wings.\r Just a great unique experinece overall. more

Outstanding, across the board. 2/19/2008

I found Zenkichi on Citysearch after a fairly exhaustive search, decided that would be the place for putting my best Valentine's Day foot forward, and hoped it would prove the ideal romantic spot to take my special lady.\r The entire experience was simply superb. The ambience, the decor, the service, the food, the drink.\r We had the Valentine's Day Omakase. I'm not exactly a newbie to Japanese cuisine, but the entire sequence of dishes was beyond great. The miso soup (with carrots cut into heart shapes...awww) we agreed was the best we'd had; tuna sashimi with the first selection melted in our mouths; the scallops w/mushrooms was a unique but welcome newcomer to our palates; the tempura sea urchin was reminiscent of every delicious piece of fried anything I've ever had; the king crab knocked her socks off; and for dessert the whipped cheesecake & chocolate torte & (somehow, summer fresh) strawberries w/whipped cream were some of the items that stood out to us as we rehashed the experience over the rest of the weekend.\r We had bottle of the ""Demon Slayer"" sake with our meal; it was the best sake I've ever tasted, even at that little underground place on 40-somethingth St. in Manhattan. It was recommended by one of the very gracious servers, and it was a great one. We relished every drop of the bottle.\r I'm gushing, but I'm seriously, my date was beside herself by the time we left. She'd come from out of town, back where the seafood is not nearly as fresh as the pork chops and corn on the cob, so I really wanted to show her something special, and Zenkichi helped me knock it out of the park. It was definitely the most I've ever dropped on dinner for two, but it was an experience that she and I will never forget, and thus worth every penny... Pros: Everything? Cons: Wish I could afford to take her here every weekend. more

Amazing food 2/13/2008

The food here is great. We got the prix fixe menu. and everything we got just melted in our mouths. the desert, it was a chocolate sesame mousse was so good we ordered another one. the waitstaff are very responsive and helpful. it's nice eating in a semi-private space, u really concentrate on your company and the food. And the food lived up to our concentration. Love it! more

YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!! 1/25/2008

This is not a review based on the food, service, or decor, however, I believe that people should hear what I have to say about this restaurant. I read a few positive reviews and decided to make a reservation for Valentines Day. The hostess on the phone informed me that a reservation cannot be made because ""the manager is out of town and will return the call to make a reservation"". I found this to be odd and fishy. Afterall, it doesn't take a manager or the restaurants owner to make a reservation. How many times can you remember where you called to make a reservation and needed to speak to the manager in order to do this? Probably, never. Anyway, I waited for two weeks and the manager never called me back (I wasn't surprised) because I didn't honestly believe the ""manager story"" anyway. I began to wonder whether this restaurant was worth it -- perhaps I should have called someone else to make a reservation but decided to give it a second try anyway. This time, I was given another story -- but it did two things. #1, it gave the truth and #2, it proved that the ""manager story"" was indeed bogus. This time I was told by the hostess on the phone that ""priority is given to customers who have eaten in the restaurant before and left their email addresses"". So basically, whoever ate their before and left their email address would be contacted and if any remaining seats existed, it would go to first time customers. I found this to be ridiculous. I'm sorry Zinkichi but you havent earned the all-star reputation to offer priority seating for past clients. I have been to all of the well-known restaurants in NY -- Water Club, Sea Grill, One if by Land two if by Sea, Peter Lugors, and many many others. None of them offer priority to existing customers. There are zillions of amazing restaurants in NY and Zinkichi doesn't deserve the business from people they think don't deserve their food. more

A really unique romantic experience! 1/19/2008

My husband surprised me by taking me here last night. We live nowhere near here but he insisted we had to drive to Williamsburg to this secret spot. Turns out it is a midnight jungle with bordello-like nooks and crannies and curtains that guarantee every seating is its own hideaway. As for the food, I was surprised how good it was. I normally eat sushi and sashimi when I do Japanese, so I'm a little rusty with yakitori (most closely translated as Japanese bar food). The editorial review that says 4 or 5 dishes is enough for 2 is wrong. We were only full after sharing 8 dishes between us (full disclosure- we were very hungry and I have a healthy appetite). Obviously, YMWV. The really great dishes included the tuna carpaccio, eel and cream cheese tempura, eggplant, pork kakuni, and salmon in dashi broth. The dishes that were less than spectacular were the black cod (overwhelmingly salty), tofu with scallops (completely bland), and mushrooms in bechamel sauce ( a little less bland than the tofu). We were very sad when we were too full for dessert, but we are definitely going back to try out the other dishes. The total bill was a reasonable $85 w/o sake. Pros: Great place for romantic special ocassions Cons: Some dishes could be reworked (see my review) more
