Horrible Sushi + High Prices 2/7/2009

My boyfriend and I went here on Saturday night, around 6:30pm. We eat sushi a lot but our regular place isn't open on weekends... :(\r \r It wasn't busy, but the service was horrific...The waitress wasn't very attentive, so much so that other waitresses were waiting our table better than she was, keep in mind the place was not busy. So BAD SERVICE: Strike 1.\r \r We finally got to order our drinks and we ordered 2 spicy tuna hand rolls at the same time. The saki came, but the bottle wasn't full... Our hand rolls arrived just before our dinner did...very bad since we were not able to order dinner rolls for about 30 minutes because our waitress was non-existent. Once we did oder our dinner it took about 30 minutes to arrive, AND what a HUGE disappointment!!\r 1. the spicy tuna looks and tastes like raw chorizo\r 2. the ""caviar"" is not real caviar it is so loud and fishy, totally not caviar, some cheap horrible fish eggs...\r 3. the rolls are large, but rather disgusting...they are large because they don't contain quality fish and have tons of filler\r strike 2\r The check rolls around, it was overpriced for the foulness of the food, the weakness of the miso soup, the horrific service, the loud drunk idiots at the sushi bar (who get their food the fastest)...$60 for dinner is not bad if the fish is fresh, the sake bottle is full, and the service is decent. But $20 at this place is a waste. We will absolutely never return! OH Yeah GO to MEGAMIs 10th and J st!\r Pros: The toilet seat in the bathroom is heated Cons: The fish is not fresh, parking is a hassle, service is really horrible. more

Try Mukini's or Momiji's in Downtown Sac instead. Horrible Customer Service. 8/6/2008

This restaurant was horrible. We saw our waitress maybe once, couldn't get even a refill on water, 30 minutes to get a Teriyaki plate that was bland and had a lot of fried breading with no meat in it. When we tried to send it back we were told that it tasted great, had nothing wrong with it and could not have something else. The manager was rude (not to mention covered in tatoos and piercings) and left us in a bad mood for our musical we were going to see. We were appalled at the lack of basic manners in a manager no less. Maybe she was just having a bad night but don't take it out on your customers if you want them to ever come back. Pros: Rolls came out quick and were ok Cons: Teriyaki was sooooo slow and bad customer service more

Sushi at Zen 10/21/2007

I love Zen T. They make the best sushis and they know how to please their customers satisfaction and their soy sauce are bomb. It just tastey with rice and sushis.. I love that place. As much as I like Kru Zen I the best of the best. Wink* more

THE BEST!!! So glad the chefs from Taka's are back!! 3/24/2007

I used to eat at this restaurant when it was on S street...and called Takas. Now Zen Sushi is operated by the same chefs but in a different location. I must tell you...I have lived many places..including Seattle, and the bay area. (both are known for great sushi) This sushi is some of the best out there....especially for being in the Sacramento area. Pros: THE SUSHI!!! thats all you need Cons: servers are very busy, there is sometimes a long wait, place is small more

Please don't be confuse about 'Zen-toro' and 'Zen sushi ' that is different restuarant 1/1/2007

Zen - toro that owned by Masa has closed business since 1 st August . Pros: real japanese taste is here Cons: - more

HORRIBLE customer service; very good food 12/14/2006

The customer service here is absolutely horrible and down right rude. We made reservations and were not seated until one hour and 15 minutes after our reservation time. The seating is also very cramped; your seat is inches away from the patron behind you at another table. The only thing this place has going for it is the food. However, we were treated so poorly that its not ever worth going back for. There are plenty of other sushi places in town with excellent food and customer service that encourages repeat business. Pros: Sushi Cons: Customer service, seating arrangement more

The Japanese place to go! 8/14/2006

If you're tired of eating in "fast food" japanese places, this is the place to go! The food is great but do not expect huge quantities of food. You get quality not quantity. Pricey but if you want fresh, healthy japanese food, then pay them a visit! PROS: Delicious, healthy food CONS: Pricey more

great sushi conventient downtown location 8/13/2006

i have eaten at zen toro on more than a few occasions and it is a great sushi place it is pretty convenient for people who work downtown and the food is always good Pros: great service great food quality Cons: parking downtown can be a challenge more

Terrible Services for Moms with Kids 7/11/2006

Our family has enjoyed this restaurant very much since Davis branch opened some monthes a go. Their food is good and srvices are used to be good. However, they changed their attitude when only MOMS and KIDS were presented in the restaurant at Davis branch.. more

The Best Japanese food in town 5/18/2006

I have tried sushi before at other places and never really had a taste for it until I had Zen Toro sushi. Now I cant get enough of it. I can understand some of the bad experiences written on the reviews... even I have been somewhat disappointed with their service, but that will never keep me away from the yummy sushi. They also have great dinner entrees for people who don't eat raw stuff... oooohh and they have a large selection of sushi that doesn't have any raw stuff in it. Soooo Goooood. It is the only place I will ever eat sushi! more

I don't know where the last four reviewers ate 9/27/2005

but it could not have been Zen Toro. It IS the best sushi in Sacramento. My husband and I have eaten here on many occasions and have never had a bad experience. The food is always delicious, service prompt, and the atmosphere delightful. They regularly update the menu, adding new and experimental rolls - things you don't find anywhere else in Sacramento. In a city practically over run with sushi restaurants, Zen Toro is the one constant and reliably yummy one. =) I highly recommend this establishment. You will not be disappointed. Pros: Food, Service, Location Cons: Parking more

best sushi in sac! 12/3/2004

this is my favorite restaurant in sac! i live in NYC now and everytime i am home, this is one place that is a must!! the sushi is wonderful and so affordable as is their menu. i have yet to find a place like this in NYC, where all the sushi is not authentic and way overpriced! i have loved every dish at zen toro and crave it when i'm not in sac!! Pros: Food, great value more

Best Sushi in Town!!! Yum Yum...... 11/21/2004

Yummy~~~Zen Toro has the best sushi in town, and I have been their customer since last year when I was referred by my friends. ""Lemmon papper albcore"" is the must have dish!!!! But if you want sushi dishes to arrive before meal, you definitely need to request it beforehand. more

Zen Flop 6/28/2004

Twice visited, twice burned. Told this was the best sushi in town, I'm now questioning the sanity of many I once admired for their good taste. We waited and waited on a very slow Monday night --one member of the group finished his non-sushi dish 60 minutes before the first sushi ""appetizer"" arrived. We finally gave up and left without eating after 100 minutes. Try the piano bar and restaurant two doors down, they've fed more than one dissatisfied and hungry Zen Toro customer. Pros: Cool toilet, Edamame Cons: , Expensive, Overhyped more

Lobster roll...yummy 11/9/2003

Sushi was very good. IF you like Mikuni's but with not as much of the sauces they put on it, then this is a great place. Lobster roll is killer! One block from Elements and the Wells Fago Pavillion Pros: Food, Location Cons: Small place more

Rude Service 5/15/2003

I was appalled. I went in a group to dine for lunch, and my food (a sushi roll) was accidentally served to one of the group members on his plate along with several groupings that he had ordered. After several minutes, I asked the server for my food, and she realized she had served my meal on my companion's plate, and asked for me to share what was on his plate after he had already eaten most of it. Upon seeing my disappointed reaction, she agreed to provide me with a new roll. At that, the owner came over, removed what was left of my companion's meal, and reserved the remaining portion of what was originally intended for him. To make matters worse, I never received my meal. I will never return to this place, nor could I ever recommend it to my friends. more

Bad sushi 12/18/2002

We went to Zen Toro after the Hyatt concierge told us to check it out. What a disappointment! The place is small, noisy. The service was not carefull - they forgot one of our orders. But mostly, the sushi just wasn't good. We tried basic things, like Salmon, Yellowtail, Sweet shrimp, and even Toro. They all tasted the same! The Toro was chewy. On a wall, we saw a newspaper clip showing the Hyatt and Zen Toro were some kind of business partners. No wonder the concierge recommended it, despite its poor quality sushi... more

Zen Toro Sushi is Excellent! 12/11/2002

Zen Toro is real sushi. Two sushi chefs prepare their masterpieces in a rich atmosphere of elegance. Delicious & unique rolls allow you to have enhanced flavor with every bite. Beautiful cut slices of fish for Nigiri. The restaurant has a personal relaxed feel about it. Best time to go is in the evening. Pros: Clean, Home feeling, Freindly Cons: Small Resturant, Parking can be tough more
