More Than Expected 9/14/2006

After calling Harrah's Diamond Services and finding out the James Brown Show was going to be delayed an hour, I went to the Ameristar and listened to the Robert Cray Show. That show was great for the short 50 minutes I stayed, but my focus was on seeing a legend so I sped up the street and got to the VooDoo Lounge right as the show started. A band of 10 or more took the stage of the sold out performance in dated matching outfits from perhaps a Las Vegas thrift store...bright red coats, blue pants..you get the picture. Then the emcee, probably from an old Vegas bar act, dressed in an all white suit takes the stage and riles up the audience in anticipation of James. The fanfare of the band built up until James, wearing an all bright red suit spangled with sequins on his lapel finally emerged and the crowd went wild. James captivated the show in pure Las Vegas fashion from that moment on. The band jammed solid for an hour and a half, with a pair of gorgeous dancers mesmerizing the crowd at his side and backup vocals from 4 other gals. What James lacks with age (73) creeping up on him, he more than makes up for it with showmanship. The sax and guitar solos had the crowd on fire and everytime James grabbed the microphone, it was a blast from the past. Totally worth seeing and I will be anticipating another show in the future. He is definately the King of Soul and I was lucky to have seen him. Unfortunately, my luck didn't fare so well when I played the card table after the show, but I left a true winner in seeing the ""Legend"". Pros: A soul-searching performance from the past! more
