the place is nice, but if you're going for food, go elsewhere. not only was it overpriced, it was not very tasty. I had one beef skewer for $8, which sounded tasty on the menu,...

DELICIOUS! Great place! We loved it. Now we know why there is no ""walk-in"" seating on the weekend evenings. We made a reservation to see what the hype was, and now we know. It's the Chocolate Souffle, oh my, that is FABULOUS! more

Absolutely Superb!!! 11/7/2010

OF the higher end restaurants I've been to in PDX, this is my new favorite. My wife and I shared the bacon wrapped prawns, fried figs, rabbit pate (YUM), wild mushroom salad and the duck confit. Each plate was fabulous...So good, I was literally giddy throughout the entire meal. I couldn't even say which was my favorite as they were all splendid. The chocolate souffle which required pre-order was also fabulous. I had the beet infused vodka bloody mary and was probably the best BM I've ever had. The ambience was nice but to be honest I barely noticed it as the food had all my attention. Our server was excellent as well. With all the choices in PDX to eat at VQ will make it easier for us to decide in the future. We'll return again and again. Highly, highly recommend. more

So Cool 9/2/2010

Drinks last night after work were incredible, and the bartenders know their drinks. It's amazing. Crowded, naturally - but this place has survived in a town that most bars/restaurants don't last 5 years. I've known this place since the 80's and it's always been good. I just wish it was a little bigger. \r \r Always happy and friendly, this place is almost (if not already) legendary in Portland. more

It's still a Landmark 6/30/2010

**This review was originally posted on another site (y.e.l.p.), but it was removed, along with all my other reviews as that site is practicing very unethical business. Pros: food, patio, brunch, happy hour Cons: service is either unpolished or fantastic. more

Expensive but okay 2/12/2010

This place was good the first time I went there. The bartender was awesome. The waitress was really nice and sweet. She was very knowledgeable and made the girls and I feel special when we were ordering. The second time I came here *(A WEEK LATER) with my boyfriend... A grouchy waitress took our drink order, gave the order to the bartender (*we were only a couple of feet away from the bar) sitting at a table. The beer was poured from the tap and my drink was made and was sitting on the bar for EVER. I could have gotten up to get it myself... I should have. The waitress was pushing us to order food which was annoying. We came here for DRINKS. We had to ask her to refill our water for us, which was annoying. Also, which I find pretty disgusting is that on the bar they have toppings for the drinks (cherries.. blah blah blah) and the waitresses that night WERE EATING THEM in front of us and they were sucking on their fingers. They never washed their hands before handling our drinks and such. I was highly disgusted. HORRIBLE. Won't go there again. Save your time and your money. Go to Hubers. Pros: Monday nights Cons: Friday nights more

Always flawless 2/9/2010

With a quickly changing seasonal menu, there's always exciting things to try! I have been to the VQ several times and I was shocked to see some of the bad reviews on this site... I have never encountered a rude or snobby server and my food as always been impeccable. I am usually one of the youngest people here but I feel that I am treated the same as everyone else, unlike some places where the staff assumes a young person knows nothing about food, wine, etc. Pros: Pros: inspired menu, lengthy wine list, knowledgeable staff Cons: Cons: spendy, although well worth it more

fabulous dining experience 1/31/2010

Our reservations were last minute and they were very accommodating. My wife and I were very pleased with the overall ambiance. The staff was knowledgeable and offered their opinion when prompted. The bus staff was on their game consistently. The cocktails were great as was the large Caesar we split. My steak was one of the best I've ever had(I was a broiler cook at a steakhouse). My wife had the seared Tombo and loved it.Our desserts were very generous and delicious accompanied by great coffee. We will be back...why did we wait so long to delight in VQ in so my passings by?We look forward to our next visit. Pros: menu variety, service, yummy cocktails&food Cons: parking? more

Food is good, service is ok, watch the bill! 9/12/2009

So I think the veggie burger is one of the best I have ever had, but why on earth doesn't it come with tomatoes? That is very bizarre to me. I had made a few modifications to the order, so when it came out without tomatoes, I thought maybe they were missing in some confusion. I mean, it is a burger, right? Lettuce and tomato (and maybe onion) is pretty much a universal standard. So I asked to have a side of tomatoes. Ok, I got 2, maybe 3 slices. With the tomatoes, it tasted much better. The side salad though, for a 2 or 3 dollar charge extra, was just greens and dressing. Nothing special and not particularly tasty. The pizza my friend got had figs, prosciutto, onions, brie, and was really good. Overall we were fairly pleased, although we waited a while for a server when we first sat down. But then we got the bill and not only did I pay for the extra salad, which I agreed to, but I was charged 2$ for the tomatoes. No one told me that there was an extra charge. Personally I think it is ridiculous to nickel-and-dime people, especially in this economy, and not even tell them about it. Not to mention that usually if a guest is upset about something, they are willing to maybe forgive the charge ""just this once"", but I guess its worth it to them to lose a customer over 2$. It's more of the principal of the matter. Don't nickel-and-dime your customers, and don't be deceitful. They could have made this right but they chose to ignore it. Where is the manager at times like these? Pros: Amazing Veggie Burger Cons: It doesn't come with tomatoes, only a hidden cost! more

Great breakfast place 9/9/2009

Excellent food. I always get the Eggs Benedict or the brioche french toast. The french toast is the best I have ever had. I loved the marscarpone, candied nuts, and bananas. The maple syrup was really good, not too sweet. In the summer, sitting outside on the patio with flowers all around you is wonderful. I have been here numerous times on the weekend, and have yet to experience a wait. Guess the parking discourages people venturing downtown on the weekend. Let me tell you, it is worth it. Pros: Great food/coffee, outside patio, service, no long waits Cons: Downtown parking more

Make Mine Mediocre 6/27/2009

I'm not going to generalize too much because this was the first meal I've had at VQ for three years (because the last one pretty much sucked). Let me just say that the poached eggs on our Benedicts (three of us) and those of the tables near us were close to hard boiled. We might have ignored that if there had been enough Hollandaise to make the muffins moist. 'There wasn't. When the waiter came by to ask ""how everything was"" we told him politely that all the poached eggs were over-cooked. His response was to smile like a doofus and say ""I'll pass that along."" Fifteen minutes later the table next to us got their Benedficts and echoed our complaint. They got the same goofy smile and the promise that he'd pass along the complaint. This is Portland, Oregon. Paying $14-16 for brunch should get you something interesting. At Veritable Quandry it gets you the kind of food you'd expect at a casino brunch on the Vegas strip... at a higher price. Pros: Great location if you're sitting outside Cons: Mediocre food more

Dont miss out 11/29/2008

This restaurant has an excellent brunch menu on Saturday mornings/early afternoons. The food was amazing as well as the rich french press coffee. The service was wonderful. An overall great experience. I would recommend this to others. Pros: Food more

1st time was great, 2nd not so good.. 10/1/2008

the first time i went here i had a fabulous frittata made with oregon truffles and some kind of amazing cheese. the next time i went i tried to get the same frittata but when i ordered what i thought it was - i was sorely dissapointed. The old frittata had been replaced with a pretty bad replacement. This one was made with lobster mushrooms (which i had never tried and shall never again) as well as some other kind of mushroom that was tasteless. There was gobs of brie on top in an attempt to flavor it up but it still was a pretty bad meal which i did not even attempt to eat. I am still willilng to try one more time and see if the next meal will be fab or drab. more

Even though its close by, don't go on show night 7/11/2008

Had tickets to the show, I mentioned it to the reservationist, the hostess and the waiter. We had to almost run to get to the theater in time for curtain. Cons: Hard to find the reservation desk more

Hands Down - My Favorite restaurant in Portland 6/16/2008

Great atmosphere - creative food. Friendly staff. The most lush and relaxing, garden-like patio in Portland. Burgers - great, Duck Confit Crepes - awesome! Service is always phenomenal - they don't hire amateurs here and why should they - they are a landmark restaurant. Had a really great cheese plate, server could have known a bit more about the cheeses, but overall a great presentation. Everyone from the bus boys to the hostess were super friendly and professional. Drink menu is creative; White Sangria is pretty good. Great wine list! Fair priced and a HUGE pour! Sometimes the late night menu ends a bit earlier than it should - but I'm sure they want to get rid of the drunks since they are a late night establishment and not nourish all the intoxicated people of Portland! Pros: Location, ambiance, serivice, decor, patio, food wine and drink list Cons: Nothing! more
