This place makes me angry. I looove a good margarita and some Mexican food, but this restaurant has neither. The service was incredibly slow, and instead of apologizing, the wai...

Ice Margarita 7/14/2004

previous reviewers had a much different experience. Staff very nice, but inept. Took forever to take drink order and it was early and not busy. Waitress kept threatening to bring chips and salsa, we had to beg in the end. The bartender said they didn't have cocktail napkins?! Food was good, not great but WAY over-priced. The ultimate insult were the drinks. Margarita was 95% ice. And for the price we would have liked more than 5 sips of drink. Can ya spare it? We complained and the next round was much lighter on the rocks. We won't bother to go back. Pros: Interior design Cons: , Prices, Food and Drink more

LOVING IT! 7/13/2004

This place is GREAT. We were seated on time with a party of 9. The waitress was AWESOME and very attentive. The food was good, not the best but good enough. The atmosphere and drinks made everything worth while. MAKE A RESERVATION IF YOU WANT TO EAT. Pros: Inexpensive, Easyparking, Hot spot- hot crowd more

Good Times 7/9/2004

Friday the 9th of July my good friend and I went to have dinner at the VMC and we both agreed it was one of the best times we've had. The service was top of the line..........because of David (our all around cute waiter), and because the owner: Carlos came out to personally say hello and introduce himself. He was very open and friendly. The food is to die for and the ambience is awesome. We will be there again this month and we are taking as many friends as possible. Don't forget to order the margarita in a pineapple drink and of course you must try the Ahi Tuna ceviche to start off and ask for DAVID!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: WAITER, AMBIENCE, FOOD/DRINKS more

A much needed touch of Latino culture... 7/6/2004

I had read about the once famous DJ at Gaslight (turned Opium Den) Big Daddy Carlos opening up a bar, so it was much to my delight to go and check it out. I loved it. The decor, the service was great and so were the chips and salsa. It was a holiday weekend so it wasn't very packed, but I had a great time. Cesar, the host was very sweet in introducing himself to me and also telling me details of this wonderful new hot spot. I can't wait to go back with more friends for more good times. I for one am glad to see some fellow Latinos representing in Hollywood. Keep up the good work guys and see you soon! Pros: Good Crowd, Mixed Crowd, Friendly service more

Hep place to be 7/3/2004

Cruised into this restaurant tonight after having a lame night hittin the bars on the Cahuenga strip. Had no idea this cool spot was even here. Walked in and was pretty blown away with the decor and bar scene. Couldn't get a table, which was kind of a bummer but had a great time at the bar. Can't wait to come back and check the food out! It looked good. Pros: , sexy scene Cons: , no table available more

Editorial
  • In Short
You'd never guess from the grungy garage facade that this is one hot tamale of a place. Inside, the trendy Mexican lounge and restaurant is carnival fun house-meets-Tijuana kitsch: Blue velvet walls, black-lit Elvis portraits, sombreros on the ceiling and a palette consisting almost entirely of deep shades of red set the scene. Roving mariachis serenade hipsters and revelers sipping pineapple and coconut margaritas, while energetic salsa music booms during their breaks. A full menu is comprised of many calorie-conscious twists on traditional cantina favorites like ahi ceviche, turkey empanadas and tequila-flavored shrimp bisque.

Hits: The crowd is fun and the chips and salsa trio (chipotle, tomatillo and hot bean dip) are some of the best items on the menu. Note: they're free with dinner.

Misses: Unless you have a reservation for a large group, you'll have to wait for a table, which can be painfully slow on weekend nights. Also, the margaritas are very pricey.
