Urban Active Norwood 8/17/2011

After being a member for >5 years, I walked in one AM to find that the lock had been removed from my locker and all the contents of the locker removed. I had the same locker since day one of my membership, and had been paying a membership fee, and a locker fee, which were completely up to date. The manager said that I needed a plaque on my locker. No one had ever indicated to me that I needed a plaque on my locker. The manager was reluctant to refund my membership fee, but I talked with a supervisor at Global Fitness (the holding company), who immediately refunded my membership and locker fee. However, the club lost the contents of my locker. I would never recommend this club to anyone. more

BEWARE of signing a contract 5/31/2011

BUYER BEWARE! We have several Urban Active locations in the central Ohio area. There is now suit against Urban and it's been in our local media as follows (sorry this won't let me post http or com so please add the 'm' to com in order for the link to work): www2.nbc4i.co /news/2011/apr/15/9/lawsuit-alleges-uban-active-fitness-clubs-violated-ar-454916/ www.dispatch.co /live/content/business/stories/2011/04/14/urban-active-faces-class-action-lawsuit.html I received a questionaire from the Ohio Attorney General as well. Urban has several complaints with the AG's office: www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/searchconsumercomplaints.aspx/?from=nav more

Excellent Facilities 2/28/2011

I started my membership at this gym in the beginning of January, and I have been very pleased so far. Prior to Urban Active I had only been to smaller gyms, I was very surprised to see how big Urban Active was. All of the machines are new and well maintained, which for me is the most important part about a gym. I haven't used any of the personal trainers, but from what I've heard they're very good. more

No way to do business 8/2/2010

A few months ago I renewed my contract with Urban Active; I got 15 months. I don't know if I paid too much but I agreed to it so I can live with the decision. Today (8/2/10) I was told I ""have a balance-due"" of $15 for semi-annual ""facility improvement fee"". I protested that I agreed on a price and they agreed on a membership period, I was told, ""It's in your contract"". Yes, somewhere in micro print around Clause No. 45, I suppose. This was not mentioned at all in the three conversations we had about renewal. After the manager pointed out how rude I was for protesting (can you believer that!) they finally relented. Still, if I could get out of my contract now, I would. I am hoping mad! This sneaky, underhanded way of padding their fees is ridiculous and is no way to do business. If they'd tacked on an extra $30 before I re-joined I may have actually gone along with it-- at least I would have known in advance and been able to decide whether to renew or not. This is Total Garbage. (On second thought, maybe I should have paid the fee. They could spend it on a new vacuum cleaner or replace some of the many broken TV's and worn out equipment.) Pros: Location Cons: Hidden fees, questionable business ethics more

Average gym adamant about sales and overselling memberships 1/7/2010

I have been a member for over a year. On the plus side, I really like group fitness and for the most part they do a good job with the classes. I have become increasing dissatisfied with UA. Broken equipment takes weeks to get fixed. Memberships are WAY oversold. It is impossible to get a machine after 5pm. Everytime you call they won't answer your question until you answer whether you're a member or not so they can try to sell you a membership- SO FRUSTRATING. It seems sales are the most important factor for them. Their Saturday and Sunday hours are very limited- opening Sat at 8am and Sun 9am which means your Sunday doesn't start until almost noon by the time you work out and shower. The mats are very smelly and need to be replaced. A big improvement could be to invest in wipes so everyone wipes down the machine and mat they used rather than walking half way across the gym, waiting for a paper towel and then spraying disinfectant onto the paper towel. The spray exudes toxins into the air and therefore into your lungs- very bad for people with asthma and lung problems. I'd love to see additional classes added before work hours, like a 6am Urban Iron class or pilates. The only class before work hours is spinning (which is a good class). As soon as my contract is up, I will be looking for a new gym with wipes, ""pleasant"" smelling bathrooms, management that is accommodating and about customer service, has more classes and has not oversold their memberships. Pros: adequate equipment, cinema workout room, spinning studio Cons: rude management, limited hours, dirty smelly bathrooms. more more
