Reading through these reviews reminded me that TOTH is the place CHers love to hate. They all seem to think it's unimaginative to go there, but I must say, it's a great place to t...

Great Food 10/4/2007

Great Food, Great place to bring a large crowd. The service is very professional. Worth driving to Chapel Hill. more

Average fare, good drinks and people-watching 9/8/2007

My husband and I have been here several times; he likes their southern fried chicken dinner. The other menu options aren't great and what's there tastes average. I've had 3 different dinners and all were on par with frozen dinners. The service is always bad when it's busy (which is most of the time) so don't expect great service, though the servers do try hard and are generally nice. You will have to ask for water, for a 2nd glass of wine, and bread if you want it, and most likely will have to flag down your server at least once. There is a good drink selection, and the bartenders can help you if you're not sure what you want to drink. This is a good place to have a couple of drinks and maybe a couple of appetizers, but not a great dinner spot if you're really hungry and want value. Pros: Drink selection; people-watching; outdoor dining Cons: Slow service; average food more

Great place 5/28/2007

My husdand and I really enjoyed Top of the Hill. The wait staff was friendly and the food was pretty good. I got the Santa Fe Chicken Pasta. It needed more chicken but it was still alright. My husband's food was REALLY good. He got a stuffed chili thing with black beans and chicken. It was SO GOOD. Next time I'm getting that. Besides the food, the enviroment was nice. It's a great place to chill out after bumming around Franklin Street. Pros: Reasonably priced food, nice ambience Cons: Drinks are expencive, parking more

Great view! 11/13/2006

This is a great place to eat outside! The view is one of my favorites. I enjoyed the food as well, but the view was even better! Great place to people watch. Pros: view Cons: parking more

Great beer and food! Nice atmosphere! 11/12/2006

Great place to sit outside on warm nights with a good view of Franklin street. The food was excellent and they have great microbrews! Pros: Great food! more

Excellent food! 10/1/2006

Unlike some of the reviews, We have had excellent service and outstading meals at this restaurant. Their pasta dishes are to die for, and so are their salmon dishes. I always look forward to the presentation of these meals, and the desserts are outstanding. I do reommend reservations, especially on a weekend night. There is excitement in the air when you go during the fall when there is so much to witness if you sit on the patio. The bar portion is always friendly and drinks are off the charts!\r more

Unpleasant Experience 8/4/2006

I went to this restaurant with my family because its rating was so high on citysearch. We sat down at a table in the corner near the window which we liked, but we were asked to move to another table, and they didn't give a reason why. 5 minutes later they sat another family at that round table and it definitely didn't appear that the table was reserved by this family. The waiter we had took our orders and then disappeared for 15 minutes, which I guess wouldn't have been a problem had we not been waiting on refills for 10 of those minutes. But, to his credit, for the remainder of the evening he did a wonderful job getting us refills. \r \r I got the pork tenderloin and I wasn't a big fan of the sauce it came with. The tenderloin also had a lot of fat in it that I tried to cut around most of my meal. My mashed potatoes were really good, though. One of my other family members got the filet mignon which was the special for the evening. I tried some of it and it was not tender at all. I chewed on the piece for a good bit. The steak also had a good amount gristle in it. The only other problem we had at the place was that they overcharged us for the filet special. Normally the filet is 24.99, but it was on special for 22.99. We had to call them on our way home because they had charged us 26.99. They quickly corrected this problem, though.\r \r I might try this place again, because I am hoping this was just a once in a lifetime bad experience there. A lot of people apparently really like this place, but from our experience it really made it hard for us to see why. \r \r Pros: Cheeseburger, Mashed Potatoes, Pizza Cons: Service, Price, Filet Mignon more

Must do in Chapel Hill 12/10/2005

This is a great place. I was in town to visit friends and go to a football game. The food is exceptional and the patio gives a great view of Franklin Street. You have to try the Thumbs and Toes (spicy chicken), and the Filet Mignon. Inside the bar is non-smoking, so you can actually see and converse with people. Also, being from the west, I asked if they could turn one of the HDTV's to a west coast game, and they changed it right away. I was told though if the Tarheels were playing, that definetely wouldn't have happened (It gets pretty crazy). The night I was there Stuart Scott (ESPN) was there, and was told Roy Williams, Michael Jordan, etc. are regulars. When going for dinner make sure to get a table on the railing for a view of downtown Chapel Hill. more

Sorry I drove there 8/3/2005

After checking out the ""Top 10 things to do in the Triangle"" I was excited to try out Top of the Hill for an outdoor venue with great views. My in laws were in town and we wanted to show them around. Being from Cary we don't make it out this far often but thought it sounded like it was worth the drive. It was not! The ""server"" threw 2 menus at us (there were 4 of us). The bar food was horrible and the menu options slim. I was sorry we had ordered drinks and had to stay an extra 10 minutes to finish those before driving to Southpointe were we found many wonderful dining choices. I don't know how this place got it's high rating..it is totally not worth it. Pros: N more

Maybe not at ""Top"" form - 7/19/2005

I had dinner there with family and was very disappointed by the menu choices. Food prep and quality were fine, but choice was very narrow. This is BREW PUB and they didn't have a single burger or chicken sandwich on the menu, but we already ordered drinks so we stayed. This was really one of the more forgettable meals that I've eaten in Chapel Hill. I do like there beer much better than the other Chapel Hill brew pub. Pros: Good Beer, Service, Location Cons: Slow Kitchen, Limited Menu more

Beyond the average Bar 5/13/2005

There are some pretty good beers here! The menu is definitely a step above most bars - and very reasonably priced. If it's available, definitely try the decadent special - Kobe beef burger with foie gras, lobster mayo, all for a steal of $15!! We had a hard time believing you could get Kobe beef so inexpensively! Their sauteed calamari was good and spicy, and I love the fact they offer a low carb menu! The only disappointment was a cajun risotto with a bad risotto texture, which was quickly forgotten upon the arrival of their chocolate chocolate cake - so good I came back the next night for more. The service was good- very helpful and friendly. THe ambience is pretty much like a TGIF/Applebees/chain restaurant except for the brewery in the back. Pros: Dessert, Beer, Low Carb Menu Cons: Parking, Boring Ambience more

Good food, good view 12/27/2004

I've been to Top of the Hill a few times for dinner and plenty of times for night life and I've never been disappointed. The filet is magnificent, the calamari is fresh and flavorful and their salads are great. With specialty beers flowing and a great view of Franklin Street, I'd recommend this place as a dining experience or late night hang out. Pros: good food, great view, beer Cons: , crowded, upstairs more

OLD RELIABLE 7/8/2004

We're a few(!) years past our college years, so we tend to avoiud late nights and busy weekends to avoid the crowds. That said, we thoroughly enjoy the pleasant, efficient service and good, solid comfort food with nice gourmet touches. We also appreciiate the fine wine-by-the-glass menu, not being beer drinkers. Hey, this place is for grownups, too! Pros: , atmosphere, food Cons: , can be crowded more

Top of the Bill 6/11/2004

Overall a nice place with lots of potential. But watch out for food recommendations that skyrocket the price or simple appetizers. Summer Micro-brews leave much to be desired. more

You've got to be kidding! 5/21/2004

I'll be the first to agree that Top of the Hill has the best outside patio and view of Chapel Hill. Their homemade brews are also pretty good. But, the food is average--nothing on the menu that I haven't seen at 1 million other restaurants. It is one step above an Applebee's. The waitstaff seems nice enough, but I was rather shocked to see the chef chase a waiter out of the kitchen and curse at them about an order--in front of my table and by the bar--certainly makes you think twice about sending something back to the kitchen. Pros: Patio, Beer, View more

A Southern Landmark 3/11/2004

T.O.T.H. has far surpassed the title of exceptional restaurant/bar and through its unparalleled amalgam of cuisine, service, atmosphere, and, of course, micro-brewed ales has solidified itself as a true Southern Landmark. It is inconceivable that one could fully experience the charm of Chapel Hill without a visit to the Top of the Hill. I cannot speak highly enough about it or the remarkable people who make it what it is. Oh, and sandwich on soft pretzel... pure genius. Pros: SERVICE, CUISINE/BEVERAGES, VIEW OF HEAVEN more

night out with the folks 2/6/2004

Recently took the parents out to dinner there and it was definately a good experience. Friendly service and a very nice view (we decided to brave the winter weather on the patio only to find that it was much nicer than the crowded inside... with candles, a nice view, not too many people, and surprisingly warm thanks to some gas heaters). The food was good, and very well-priced. The filet special was excellent and my mom really liked the catfish. My sister was a bit dissappointed with their vegetarian options, but she had a fairly decent pasta and managed to save room for some dessert a pretty tasty cheesecake. We tried Sunday brunch there as well (I still prefer Weaver Street), but my parents really liked it (a hearty, southern breakast with biscuits, bacon and eggs). Definately a very good ""Chapel Hill experience."" Pros: good service, nice view, good food more

ASU Fan 10/20/2003

Was there recently for ASU vs. UNC football game. This place rocked. Perfect location, great beers (IPA is the best), nice crowd. Went there at least once all 5 days we were in town. Food is great - try the tuna (out of this world!) Wish we had this place in AZ. more

very satisfying 5/29/2003

I've been a few times over the past few years, it's never a disappointment, even when crowded, the service is attentive, food comes very quickly (especially compared to most restaurants around here), and the food is always delicious, with a menu to please anybody. Pros: service, great food, fun Cons: noisy more

Great Bar-Great Restaurant 5/29/2003

Great Bar.....Great Restaurant. I went to this place late night for years and only got some appetizers like Nachos. etc. which were good not great. The drinks, the beers, and the bartenders were great. It wasn't until I took a date up there that I realized how good of a restaurant it really is.....the entrees like the tuna, salmon and steak are great both in presentation and taste. Other reviews of mentioned it being uber-yuppie and sorority crowd. Late night I guess I see that but 1) who cares, 2) late night is only one aspect of Top of the Hill. Pros: Food, Service, Beer more
