Keep right on walking by... 12/21/2010

I have sushi in sevarl States and in Japan. I was extremely disappointed in Tomo's. I had heard it was very good sushi.\r \r For starters I had a shrimp dumpling...what really was...the outside covering of the dumpling compressed into a small piece of sushi, little if any shrimp noted\r \r Then I had the dynamite roll...this was MINCED sushi in the roll. I had stated to the waiter that I was not happy with this at all. He stated they get many complaints about the dynamite roll.\r \r Over all the resturant is way over priced, under trained wait staff, poor food quality...never again\r more

not so great 5/28/2010

From the outside this restaurant looks like a take out/delivery type of place. The inside looks better than the outside but is nothing to brag about. Not upscale at all! They do not have any daily special rolls and you can not request a roll to be made that is not on the menu. ( it may be because the person making the sushi is Mexican) The food itself was ok. I have had much better sushi before. If you work in the area and it is the only sushi you can get I would recommend it but if you are looking to go out to dinner enjoy a good atmosphere and great sushi I would NOT recommend this place. Pros: cute area of town Cons: not so great sushi or service more

nice sushi 4/23/2010

The sushi here is the best in town!!!! Ive eaten at every other sushi restaurant in town and tomo by far is the best. The service was excellent and the waiters/waitresses were very friendly. I recommend sitting at the sushi bar and watching the sushi chef prepare the fish right in front of you. I love the owner too she is always so friendly!! Pros: nice selection of shochu more

Mediocre service, disappointing sushi 10/11/2009

While only about half the restaurant was full we waited at least 15 minutes for drink orders to be taken. We ordered drinks, appetizers, sushi, and entrees for two.\r Unfortunately, the entire night was off for the restaurant. Food delivery sequence was unexpected; sushi was delivered near the end of the entrees. Sushi, specifically the crab was imitation instead of real. At the level Tomo is competing in, this is unexpected. Also, the sushi in general felt a bit old and the taste was off. For the entrees we randomly picked options off the menu. I would recommend the entrees as decent but not exciting or unusual.\r Overall a disappointing experience for the quality of restaurant I had hoped for prior to my visit. Compared to other Japanese American restaurants in town I would rate this one below average for service and average for food with an overall below average experience from this visit.\r Pros: Decent soup base Cons: Inconsistent staff, food substitutes added without notice.. more

great sushi, upscale 8/8/2009

Visited this week on a weekday night. It's in Chevy Chase on the east end of UK campus. The restaurant itself (it's a combination Japanese restaurant and sushi bar) is very nice, the sushi bar is classy and the staff is quick and professional. I had the dinamite roll and the philly cheese roll. Both were prepared quickly and were really good. I have no complaints whatsoever about my experience at Tomo. With that said, Tomo is not the best sushi in town regardless of annual voting awards. The best sushi in town is at SEKI on Broadway. It's an older sushi bar with a quirky, older sushi chef and his wife running the show but they do one thing and they do it quite well. Still, I'll go back to to TOMO anytime and can recommend it, gladly. Pros: quality sushi bar Cons: better in Lexington more

Chicken Sushi??? 9/23/2008

The sushi WAS great... EXCEPT that when I ordered the Caribbean Roll which is supposed to be Lobster Tempura + cucumber, I got CHICKEN tempura! At first, it seemed strange that it could have been CHICKEN... but once we dissected the roll and asked the manager/owner, she didn't even deny it!!! Just said - Oh, we'll bring you another... Instead I just asked for bill WITHOUT the ""lobster"" roll on it... Despite the delish sake, this is grounds to never go back :( more

Best sushi in town 2/19/2008

Tomo restaurant is the best In LEXINGTON!!!! Why else have they been ""Kentucky Best"" three years in a row? They have a great wait staff that is informative and very knowledgeable about the food. The sushi chef prepares the finest sushi I have ever tasted. The kitchen chef has beautiful creations and great flavors of entrees'. Ladyjae, you have no idea what good food is!!! If you did, why are all of your experiences negative? Start buying groceries! I heard Kroger has ""incredible"" sushi that will fit into your price range!! Pros: great food, atmosphere, service Cons: nothing at all, parking is available more

Excellent Sushi 6/15/2007

This was the first sushi restaurant we ate at since relocating to Lexington, and we were not disappointed. The sushi options were fairly well varied and delicious, and while the teryaki salmon was a touch dry, the flavor was very good. The decor and atmosphere was more upscale than one often finds in a sushi restaurant. When we walked in we saw several tables of Japanese businessmen, so we felt confident that this was going to be a good place to eat! It was relatively expensive for sushi, but not outrageous. more

Exquisite Gourmet food 3/27/2006

This was the best sushi experience I could ever have imagined in Lexington, KY. I had heard that this restaurant catered to a high-end clientele, especially the Toyota executives so I expected good things, but my expectations were surpassed. The ambiance and restaurant architecture was very modern and chic for Lexington. The quality of fish was the best that Lexington has to offer. I spent a year in Japan on busines and found the menu very authentic to Japanese cuisine. There are several American-friendly options but the style of food remains very traditional for those who wish to experience ""True"" Japanese sushi and entrees. It is not a cheap dinner option, but I understand their lunch is more reasonable. However, for those looking for Japanese food besides hibachi-dining, this is certainly a gem hiding in a small Kentucky town city. Pros: Good Service, Ambiance, Quality Sushi and Foo Cons: Parking more

Best Sushi in Town 1/31/2006

Tomo has the best sushi that I have tried in Lexington so far. I eat there almost every week. They have a huge selection to choose from. The atmosphere is wonderful. I definitely recommend trying Tomo. Everyone I've taken there has loved it. Pros: Food, Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

DO NOT GO HERE! 11/3/2005

The sushi is awful. I order a spider roll, and the only things in there were the softshell crab and avocado... where were the other items? A friend of mine ordered a seafood salad, which contained 4 slivers of raw fish for $8. I think the people who run the restaurant are unaware that there are actually people who live in Lexington that actually know Japanese food and what should be in certain dishes. Also, the prices are unreasonable for the quality and quantity of the food served. Cons: quality, quantity, price more
