Fire totally destroyed The Biblical Arts Center in 2005. Since that time it has been rebranded as The Museum of Biblical Art or MBA, with a completely new and expanded structure, featuring eleven art galleries. This art museum has a simple mission: To display art with a Biblical theme. Nothing like it exists in the United States, making it a treasure trove for Dallas. Diverse types of art are exhibited including bronze sculpture installations, drawings, fine prints, and oil paintings. Specialized galleries have been created for Biblical Archaeology, Jewish Art, Religious Architecture, Israeli Art, African American Art and Hispanic Art.
MUSEUM ATTRACTIONS AND GALLERIES
1. European Art Gallery - Gallery featuring a variety of art from the 1300’s – 1800’s. Fresco from 1400s, sculpture from 1300s, a Veronese drawing from the studio of Benjamin West, and a painting from the School of Boticelli.
2. American Art Gallery – American religious paintings from renowned artists like John LaFarge, Albert Pinkham Ryder, John Marin, Everett Shinn, John Singer Sargent and Andy Warhol.
3. Jewish Art Gallery – Jewish art and artists are displayed such as Jacques Lipchitz, Leonard Baskin, William Gropper, Jack Levine, Max Weber, and Ben Shahn.
4. European Artists – Modern religious art from historic artists like Georges Rouault, Bernard Buffet, James Tissot, Oscar Kokoschka, Maurice Denis, Jacques Villon, Kathe Kollwitz, and Emil Nolde.
5. Marc Chagall – Jewish artist exhibit of original stone lithographs from world renowned Marc Chagall. Over 40 pieces on themes like Moses, Daniel, and Queen Esther.
6. Jewish Ceremonial Art – Exhibits of Jewish ceremonial objects for Shabbat and Holidays, like Torah Covers, Seder Plates, Hanukkah Lamps, and Menorahs.
7. Israeli Art Section – Discover Israeli art and artists from Israel such as Menashe Kadishman, Jacob Steinhardt, Agam, Moshe Castel and Marcel Janco.
8. Biblical Archaeology – Over 50 images of Egypt, Palestine, and the Holy Land from the 1800s by artist David Roberts, watercolor and lithographs of mosques, temples, archaeological and holy sites.
9. Contemporary Gallery – A large gallery featuring contemporary artists from Valley House, Craighead Green, and Gerald Peters Galleries: Bill Komodore (SMU), Lyle Novinski (UD), Denise Brown, Nancy Rebal, Miguel Zapata, and Pamela Nelson.
10. Sculpture Atrium – Frederick Hart installation of Rising Christ, Millennium Cross, and Ex Nihilo from the National Cathedral. Gib Singleton show of life size Pieta, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and Bowed Cross (Pope’s Crosier).
11. Architecture Exhibit – Original architectural plans from the museum construction and design features such as the Cast Stone Columns and Step Pyramid over the Atrium.
12. Art Restoration Lab – Working lab showing art restoration and how to restore damaged art by professional art conservators.
13. African American Art and Hispanic Art - Gallery featuring African American artists like Jean Lacy and Arthello Beck and a section of Hispanic art and traditional Hispanic religious imagery.
14. Tapestry of the Centuries Mural – Gigantic oil painting of over 350 events, figures, from Christ’s birth to the year 2000 by Vladimir Gorsky.
15. The Resurrection Mural – A 40 foot long by 18 foot high true oil painting depicting the resurrection of Jesus Christ, emerging from the Garden Tomb in glory.
