Editorial review from Citysearch 8/27/2013

This is geodesic42 from before. Stumbled upon my (very) old review, but citysearch isn't letting me edit it. I still go to the Beatnik Barbers for just about all my haircuts. My review used to contain a complaint about a haircut I once received, but I really regret writing it and I cannot overemphasize how great all the barbers here are. They are friendly, talented, and quick! more

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!!! 1/8/2012

These guys hooked me up. i'm picky and neurotic in general, and can be a really handful for most stylist to deal with. but after a lifetime of paying twice the money for half the quality, I've finally found a place where i can relax and just let them do their job. Three visits so far, and three stellar haircuts. Can't reccomend this place enough! more

pete rocks! 11/27/2010

I went to get my haircut yesterday, and my barber had a long face. When i asked him what was wrong, he said someone wrote a nasty review about him online. well let me tell you, pete has cut my hair for almost five years now. he also cuts my son's hair, and my brother's hair, and we've all always loved his cuts. Including my son, who likes to keep a long shag going on. This place rules! more

Generally amazing 11/7/2010

The Beatnik Barber is the best hair barber in town. After getting to Baltimore about a year ago, I've gotten my hair cut a few times and have enjoyed my experience here the most. I will, however, comment that if you prefer your hair long (regardless of gender), make certain to not let one of the male barbers anywhere near you. I just got my hair cut this weekend by Pete, and while the guy is friendly he doesn't seem to distinguish between ""half and inch to an inch"" and ""three inches."" The style is fine, but it's clear he has no idea how to do anything but ""short."" more

I just moved to town, and man oh man was i stressed out about finding a new barber. But these guys took great care of me for half the price i used to pay back home. Undoubtedly this is my new spot! more

Discovered this a couple of years ago. Been bringing myself and the kids regularly ever since. Excellent folks, good haircuts, great music, nice atmosphere. Highly, strongly! recommended Pros: Good music, good haircuts, good conversation more

Style on the cheap 5/23/2010

I can only imagine that the lot of folks hating on this place are really just a mass of conspicuous consumers. This place is awesome. I get A BETTER HAIRCUT here then I do for 60 bucks at a ""chi chi"" salon. I've never been able to figure out what I'm paying for at those bourgeoisie joints! Heather cuts my hair - and she is fantastic - but I've been in enough times and have enough friends that patronize this place to know that no matter who cuts your hair, the cut that you get and the service that you receive will be well worth the price. The witty conversation and the great music playing doesn't hurt either! So if you want to a killer haircut but you don't want to to die paying for it, you need to check this joint out! But if you like paying a 30 buck surcharge for tap water and canned conversation, then this isn't place for you. more

Favorite barber in Baltimore! 5/22/2010

We love this baber shop! I will actually go out of my way to this Mt. Vernon location to visit them, because I have not had much luck finding good cuts in Balto. elsewhere. I have been to three barbers at this shop and have been very happy with them all. n addition, it's a cool place with awesome music playing. Mt. Vernon parking is not always fun, but they are fortunately in that stretch of Read St. where I seem always to find a good space, day or night. Check it out! Pros: Cool place, cool barbers, reliable cuts. Cons: Afraid it will get even more popular. more

Great service, great conversation. 5/19/2010

The Beatnik Barber is an all-around good guy who just happens to kick ass at his trade. He runs this shop with passion, good humor, and a sense of pride and commitment to the community. Also, he has a memory like a steel trap... after being out of the country and out of touch for 2-1/2 years, I stopped in at the shop to say hi, and Pete chatted me up as if I'd never missed a two-week touchup in the interim. I recommend The Beatnik Barber without reservation. Your hair has found a new home. You won't regret it. Pros: Complimentary coffee, warm shaving cream. Cons: N/A more

The Beatnik Barbershop..The BEST Military Regulation In TOWN 5/19/2010

Out of the many Barbers I have tried over the years this one has beat all the others with their service. Clipper Cuts is what they do and they know how to do a great fade job or a military hight and tight and regulation haircut. Surrounding Music is awesome and price is low and it's pretty quick service. Pete is the best and always has a line but the other barbers are just as good. I would reccomend this shop to anyone needing a trim or a buzz!! You have my business and I always reccommend this to anyone looking for a GREAT barber. ROCK ON! Pros: Great Price and Freindly more

Dial-a-Cliche... 1/29/2010

As a frequent visitor to Baltimore, I like to play patron to the local shops. My last visit over Christmas found me needing a haircut. I had passed the Beatnik Barber sign several times on previous trips and decided to walk in. Cons: bad haircut, no customer service, chop shop. more

This place rocks 9/18/2009

i've been in baltimore 3 months now, had a horrible experience at the haircuttery, drove out to FX a couple times, and they were pretty good, then finally got turned on to The Beatnik Barbershop. The haircut was awesome. the place has a great blend of classic and new, it;s definitely a barbershop, but it's not overly obsessed with being retro. they finished off the cut with a straight razor neck shaves (though they don't offer full face shaves, which stinks). Over all though, i've definitely found my new spot. Pros: awesome haircut Cons: no appointments more

B-Ware B-More 6/21/2008

I had been to the Beatnik Barber once before and got a pretty decent haircut from a woman, I think her name is Annie. This time I went and thought I was lucky enough to get the owner, Pete, to cut my hair. How wrong I was. Not only did he not give me the cut I asked for, he messed up the cut he gave me. Bad fade and failure to trim over my ears- I might sound like a bit of a primadonna complaining about a barber, but here's the clincher.... Rule no.1 of cutting hair, don't cut the client! Pete's signature straight razor turned out to be as fearsome as it sounds. The guy scraped down both sides of my neck!! And then played it off by not showing me the back of my head when he was done. I felt my neck stinging worse than razor burn as I left and found out when I got to the mirror that I had the scrapes. I took pictures to post them with this comment but unfortunately that is not an option here. I read another comment on a different site where someone said he threw them out for requesting a different barber. Guess I won't go back and ask for Annie. Pros: It's a barber roulette, you might get lucky Cons: As in any roulette, you might get burned - or cut! more

owner very unprofessional 5/29/2008

I would recommend against going on days when the owner (Pete) is working. In the year and half that I've been going to this place he's cut my hair 6 or so times and has really messed up the fade each time. Recently when I politely requested to wait for a different person to cut my hair he asked me to leave the shop. I've never once complained or made a scene when I've been unhappy with his work. In 20 some odd years of getting my hair cut almost weekly I don't think I've ever known a barber shop to pitch a fit because someone requested a specific barber. Pros: Clean and well decorated Cons: Staff seems to have poor attitude more
