Hey i love this place the food is excellent 1/26/2010

I was there this past saturday with few of my colleagues. We visited the auto show. Took the free shuttle that they offer. I love buffalo wings and I had my share, but these have to be the Best friggin chicken wings I ever tasted in my life. They were reasonably priced. I'm going to make this my regular spot when i'm looking for some good eats I also suggest all you readers do the same. I'm typing this and planning on going down there later for lunch. Oh boy am i hungry. ; ) Pros: the chicken wings Cons: had to pay ten bucks to park more

Filing A Complaint due to worst dining experience 1/21/2010

Several things transpired, transforming a pleasant dining experience into an appalling impression of the evening at Sweet Water Tavern. The bartender was rude, childish, blatantly (and directly) disrespectful, heavily intoxicating and frequently used vulgar sexual language to my cousin and I. He refused to let my cousin know what was in her drink, he verbally attacked us for our opinion of a music artist, and then he told us to pay our bill and leave and became upset when I took the tip (which he didn't deserve but it is common courtesy to tip so) back off the counter, he continued to verbally attack us as we left the establishment. All of this occurred within 35, 40 minutes all under the supervision of management. Nothing was done to come to our aide and I was stunned, the craziest part is that we remained calm throughout the whole situation constantly asking him to calm down and please lower his voice, as well as letting him know his behavior was immature, unnecessary, and disrespectful. I am going to reach the top of the ladder to have this misfortune rectified. I wish things could have occurred differently. Pros: Great food Cons: Absolutely horrific customer service and management more

Great tip from local! Had great food! 8/23/2009

Found this place by our hotel after a local suggested it to us! Some of the best wings I've had! I got the wings and rib combo and both were superb! Wings were meaty and well-flavored. For those of you used to going to places w/ dozens of sauces to choose from - you do not get that choice here - but we didn't care because it was great! Two others in our party got pitas - and they loved it too! Will definitely go back next time I am in downtown Detroit! Pros: Wings, Ribs, Pitas more

GREAT RELAXING SPOT 8/18/2009

ME & MY GIRL GO THERE ALL THE TIME, ESPECIALLY FOR THE WINGS!!! Pros: GREAT DRINKS more

I love this place!! 3/3/2009

First of all let me say that the person that said whites not welcomed (this is not true)-i came down there back in september of 08 it was happy hour i saw white black well not every race there but u get my drift (i sat at the bar with 2white guys sittin next to me havin beers being attended to)-with that out of the way-the wings are so good-the ribs so good-just good food-good environment more

Spielman (previous poster) - Not so fast, my friend! 12/21/2008

In response to Spielman's review:\r \r You are obviously one of the competitors coming on here to bash this place. Speaking from residential experience, your racial review couldn't be further from the truth. One of my good friends makes the trek to Sweetwater on a weekly basis (by himself I might add) because he likes it so much. Oh, and here's the zinger, Spiel - he's a mid-60's white guy! Go figure, eh?\r \r I'm actually making my virgin conquest to this establishment to watch some football this afternoon - I'll drop back by and give an honest, unbiased review afterwards. Cheers :) more

Best Wings/Ribs anywhere 10/14/2008

Best wings anywhere in the world. I was introduced to Sweetwater by my younger sister after an evening with the ladies down to Chene Park for a concert. To my surprise I am hooked. The food is great and it reminds me of an black version of ""CHEERS"". The service is sometimes undesirable however, the food is so good that I just overlook it considering the place is cramped and the waitresses are doing the best they can with limited space. When the service was slow due to the cook, she made an apology for them and tried to make it up to us. My 22 yr. old son is now a Sweetwater fan and vows to bring his college friends from Ann Arbor down to enjoy the wings and ribs too. I need to end now or I might make a 40 minute drive today on my only 1hr lunch for some wings. Pros: Great food , large portions Cons: smoking/seating/not family friendly (kids) more

Whites not welcome 9/16/2008

If you've ever seen animal house, then you are familiar with the Dexter Lake Club. This is the Detroit version. The bartender had his back to us, saw us off the bar mirror, and never turned around. It was like a anti-staring contest. We sat there for 10 minutes, and the place was dead silent confused by the presence of white guys. A look around made it clear that we were not going to be served. That's fine, I'm sure the owners/patrons feel they have carved out a spot for themselves, so be it. There were plenty of options. Head to Jacoby's next door, or any other number of bars a block or two over (Beaubien St.) or just further west of the river (Shillelagh, Marilyn on Monroes, Forans). Pros: No idea, couldn't get served Cons: A microcosm of the bigger problem Detroit faces more

Best Chicken Wings in Detroit 7/24/2008

I visited Sweetwater for the first time three weeks ago, after a concert at Chene Park. I have been back to Sweetwater a total of four times in the past three weeks. The chicken wings are the best I have ever had! Right now I'm so hooked on the wings that I haven't tried anything else. I've never waited more than five minutes to be seated, it's a little cramped as far as seating, but the wings definitely make up for it. As far as the waitstaff, I was disappointed once out of the four times, I visited. The one time I was disappointed, the waiter had disappeared and didn't bring back what was requested. The other three times the waitresses were friendly and dependent. The gentleman that works at the door is very friendly and often times goes above and beyond his duties to make sure your visit is pleasant.\r All in all I had a wonderful experience and I'm going for wings every week!! Pros: The Chicken Wings are Great! Cons: The space inside is a bit cramped. more

Sweet food, Watered down service... 4/22/2008

If the wings werent so damn good I'd never come back here. So instead I never dine in anymore. I'm in the service industry myself so I always tip well, at the minimum 25%, for good karma of course. I can honestly say I've never left a tip over 15% at Sweetwater before. Rude and inconsiderate waitstaff. Most people would agree, don't believe me, find out for yourself. Pros: The food is incredible! Cons: Worst waitstaff in Detroit...even worse than The Park Bar. more

ATROCIOUS SERVICE 2/24/2008

The wait staff is atrocious, rude and not customer friendly. The manager on duty the evening of February 23, 2008 does not understand the value of listening to a complaint and trying to resolve it through compromise. Do not patronize this establishment. I have no idea what the food tastes like, after waiting 45 minutes for a class of water, I did not dare order any food. I cannot believe in this day and age that a restaurant does not have the ability to serve fresh vegetables. Anyone who expects a clean environment and to be served by a courteous staff should AVOID SWEETWATERS. There are too many other choices downtown where the customer is appreciated. Cons: THERE IS NOTHING POSITIVE ABOUT THIS PLACE more

Great food and interesting place! 2/16/2008

A family member recommended the Sweetwater to us as a great place for a casual dinner. We stopped in at about 6:30 on a Friday night before the Wings game. We were seated immediately and although it was busy, the service was both timely and friendly. The smells were incredible and the food and beer selections were great.\r We ordered the ""Big Pig"" and the ""Sweetwater"" burger. Both were absolutely delicious and the portions were huge! \r We parked at the Joe prior to dinner and had planned on going back to the arena via Peoplemover, but our host suggested their free shuttle, which was at the door as we were leaving the restaurant, so we hopped on. It was quick and comfortable. Pros: Delicious food and good price Cons: Seating area was a little cramped more

Fantastic food 1/27/2008

Contrary to other reviews, the service was pretty good ... polite and timely. The food was spectacular from the zesty wings, to the fall off the bone ribs and the tender big pig sandwich. The seasoned fries were also very tasty. My wife and I live in Northville and will definitely try to make it back downtown for this gem. Pros: Fantastic food, close to Cobo Cons: OK ambience more

Pity the service and professionalism of the industry isn't as good as the food 6/25/2007

I am from Australia living downtown and trying to promote the resturants to all my friends that live in Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. I was at sweetwater with my husband the other night and was disappointed that 3 ladies that came after us were seated before us and also that we had to wait in line for 20 mins. We have been to this resturant a number of times and have also ordered take outs on couple of occasions and would have no hesitation in recommending the food to anyone. My husband and I had dinner at Sweet Georgia Brown last Friday where the service, and ambience was great but food pretty average.. more

Great place 5/21/2007

This is a very distinctive place, definitly the sort of place you come downtown for. Works well for during the workday, or late night i.e. after sporting events. The crowd is really diverse which is nice. Most of all the food is awesome, with so many choices. The portions are great for the prices. My experience with the service was good...we had a great waitress during a busy late-night.\r \r Street parking is normally easy to find at night. It's within easy walking distance of all of downtown east of Woodward. more

food good; service bad 1/20/2004

Food was great. We ordered the big pig and the fish and chips. Price were very reasonable. Bad news was the service. Our waitress was rude and very slow even though we were her only table. Pros: good food, inexpensive Cons: bad service more
