Amazing, ask for Aki! 1/30/2011

I have been going to Sushi Zen for years and have always been extremely happy with the experience. I found Sushi Zen because one of the chefs, Aki, started working there and we love his food. Whenever friends and family come in town they usually say, ""Let's go see Aki!"". If you go, ask to sit in front of Aki and just say ""no menu"", you wont regret it. more

Worth the drive from Seattle! 2/9/2009

I discovered Sushi Zen in early 2008 and it has been my favorite ever since. Most sushi places are so similar, I didn't realize that even something as basic as maguro could be so much better! \r \r At lunch you get a bowl of miso soup to start out and if you're there at dinner, a bowl of edamame greets you at the table along with a few bites of cucumber salad with shrimp. We usually order the kaarage (think Japanese chicken nuggets) which come with a tasty ginger sauce, to start.\r \r My favorites are Crouching Tuna Hidden Shrimp Roll (Shrimp tempura roll covered with spicy tuna), the Stuffed Tomato (a peppery, crunchy seafood salad on top of rice wrapped in raw tuna), and White Christmas Roll - which is topped with a tasty wasabi-based cream sauce. Their nigiri is spectacular (I always say I'm going to just eat nigiri and then the rest of the menu reminds me how tasty it ALL is) - it just melts in your mouth. I don't like eel, but my friends swear that the Las Vegas Roll is the best thing on the menu. A couple of basics - Spicy Tuna Roll and Dynamite Roll- are also very reasonably priced and so delicious - the perfect amount of heat without detracting from the flavor of the fish.\r \r The service is prompt, but be patient with the sushi on busy nights- they have very talented chefs but they are making these by hand! I've been in a couple of times where an upset (and impatient!) customer gets huffy that it's not out in 10 minutes. Believe me, it's a little wait for the food, but oh-so-worth-it. more

Great service and Excellent Sushi 10/3/2008

I have gone to Sushi zen for three times in the last two weeks. The service is great and the food came fast. The best hotpot chirashi I have ever had. The stuffed pumpkin is also the best here. Really recommend it if you eat sashimi. I will definitely come back here. Pros: Great service, excellent food Cons: Quite expensive more

Sushi Soooo Yum! 4/4/2008

It was my first trip to Sushi Zen from a recommendation from a co-worker. It was Monday night and the place was busy. There were a lot of japanese people so that is always a good sign. We were promptly seated and were given free edamame and a shrimp cucumber dish in some vinegar which was yummy. \r \r Our server mentioned that he was in training but did a great job. He was very prompt and attentive. \r We started off with an order of calamari which came out with a huge portion and not too oily. We then had some sashimi. The Salmon and Hamachi just melted in our mouth.\r \r We ordered the Salmon Lemon Roll, the Baked Scallops over California, Stuffed Tomato. The salmon Lemon had such a crisp fresh taste to it with the lemons and green onions. And the baked scallops and stuffed tomato highlighted it for me. My friend is not keen on mayo so it did nothing for him but he scarfed the tuna wrapped around the roll.\r \r We ended the night with some green tea deep fried ice cream. I was soooo Stuffed. We've tried Wasabi bay and Njoy Sushi but they don't compare to this place. \r \r The only downside I can see is that it was busy which made the place kinda loud but I guess a busy place keeps the fish super fresh. Pros: Excellent Sushi and Rolls. Clean, cozy atmosphere. Attentive Server Cons: Busy more

Worst SUSHI Service and ROLLS!! 3/21/2008

I was there friday night, 3/21/08 at around 8:30pm with my wife for dinner. We sat at the sushi bar and were IGNORED by both the waiters/waitress and the sushi chef. After about 20 minutes, I finally flagged a waiter down and ordered a large bottle of beer and a glass of water. For the next 15 minutes, we were still ignored by the sushi chef untill the waitress finally asked the chef stearnly to assist us. My wife and I place an order of 2 orders of yellowtail and 2 orders of tuna sushi and an order of scallops baked over california roll. The sushie was promtly served to us. The quality of the sushi was good, but the slices were both small and thin.\r We had to wait another 15 minutes for our scallops over california roll and when it finally arrived, it was terrible!\r It had a ""fishey"" taste to it and was very bland without and texture or flavor.\r I have eaten at some of the best sushi places in southern california and 4-5 differrent one here in the greater seattle area and was just horrified at how bad that dish was.\r none the less, we paid our bill and left. \r Between the horrible service, thin cuts and horrible roll that we had, I would give this one of the worst sushi expierences of my life!\r I have NEVER wrote a bad review before, but our whole evening was a let down all because of Zen Sushi.\r Drive to Bellvue and have a much better time, service and quality of both the slices, cuts and overall exp.\r **** Trust me...DO NOT GO TO ZEN SUSHI**** Pros: quality of the sushi Cons: small slices/cuts...HORRIBLE SERVICE and the worst CALIF over scallops !!! more

****Newbie Rolls**** 3/13/2008

I happen to visit this place with my family. I saw the reviews and thought it would be great, but I was really disappointed. I have gone to many places, and this was a true let down. The dragon roll was no dragon. The rice on the rolls were pressed too hard. I thought I was having sticky rice or something. The atmosphere was nice, but the food was a let down for me. Pros: The ambience was nice. It looks clean. Cons: The rolls were a real let down from what I'm use to. more

A Gem in Mill Creek 2/23/2008

I am thrilled to have found Sushi Zen in Mill Creek. The sushi is wonderful and fresh, and they have so many creative rolls that it's hard to choose. The menu is extensive - great food for non sushi eaters as well. Moderately priced, and great deals during happy hour. more

Best Sushi in town 11/24/2007

I am a fanatic about sushi. Sushi Zen has blown me away. The sushi is fresh and food is very tasty. It's hard to get good service lately, but the staff at Sushi Zen is fabulous. They took the time to explain any questions I had about the menu. Not to mention that they are friendly and all very good looking. The ambiance is modern and classy, yet warm and inviting. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves great food and service. Pros: Great food, great service, easy parking Cons: none that I know of more

OMG, I love this place. 7/18/2007

This is my favorite spot, and it is just minutes from my home. I come here weekly and the quality and price is always outstanding; btw I am a very picky sushi gal. They have become extremely busy on the weekends, last week Friday there were people waiting out the door. They seat you real fast and it is always worth the wait. I love the salmon-lemon roll and stuffed pumpkin... The service is always extremely helpful, and if you become a regular like me, they will know your order by heart. I would hate to let the secret out but sushizen is a must! Pros: great food and great prices Cons: getting real popular more

Conveniently located, exceptional yumminess 7/14/2007

Right in the middle of suburbandom minimallness is a surprisingly nice little place to take in some top-notch fish. Very fresh and, besides the traditional items, there's always mreo than a few inventive items on the menu. The owners make it a fun experience, too. more

Sushi Heaven!! 7/14/2007

This is a MUST for sushi lovers. Great food, service and location. This is my first review...that's how much I love it! Pros: sushi variety Cons: higher end pricing, but worth it more

Great food! 6/13/2007

This place is the best! The sushi is great - from the traditional rolls to the inovative sushi zen original rolls, you're gonna find something you like. Don't feel like sushi? They have a full menu with cooked items too! I live in Seattle, but make the trip to Mill Creek just for this place. more

Great dragon roll 6/9/2007

Sushi Zen has a romantic atmosphere, so I recommend it for couples out on a date.\r \r The staff is also quite friendly.\r Sitting at the counter to get a good look at how the sushi is made by the chefs can be an interesting experience for those who are new to sushi restaurants.\r \r A personal favourite of mine was the Dragon Roll: avocado and eel on the outside wrapped around rice with shrimp tempura and vegetables on the inside. \r There's something for everybody: cucumber rolls for vegetarians, bento lunches for people on the go, macha tea ice cream for those wanting to try something a little different. \r \r It's well worth the trip to Mill Creek for a taste of Japan. Pros: Service more

Rare find in Mill Creek, GREAT SUSHI 6/8/2007

No more going to Seattle for great sushi, we now can stay in our neighborhood and still have excellent sushi. With the great selection of rolls it is hard to decide on which ones to order. We have not found one yet that we haven't liked. Sushi was very fresh. Service was excellent, fast and friendly.\r Pros: Food, Service more

**************GREATEST EVER***************** 6/8/2007

This is the place you want to eat everyday!! Taste is fantastic, chef/server are friendly! They make specials for your need even it is not on the menue. You feel you are special. They treat you special. Weekend is pretty busy, I recommend early weekday time or late time to have quality time there.\r \r 200% recommend!! You MUST go. Pros: service, quality, atmospher Cons: weekend is busy more

just good. 5/6/2007

it mite be a little overrated.\r sushi is just alright. quality of fish is just alright.\r nothing too special about it (unfortunatelY)\r i did hear a lot of praise about it though.\r they might need to redo the interiors. its too plain. \r food is just alright. \r you get what you pay for =] Pros: price, service Cons: n/a more

ok, but Wasabi Factory in Everett has 'em beat, and is cheaper 3/13/2007

I thought the sushi was good. I had the pumpkin roll, which i thought was ok. It was too mayonnaisey for my tatse. i had some sashimi which was good.\r \r But, I think the Wasabi Factory in Everett, near the Boeing factroy, is far better. You get more bbang for your buck. The sushi chef is Japanese and has worked in NY, LA and San Francisco. He serves high quality dishes with excellent presentation and taste, at a reasonable price. Pros: nice sushi chef Cons: too americanized more

45 Minutes and No Food 1/31/2007

The first time I ate here, I wrote a glowing review. I retract it! The second time, the food was mediocre-soggy tempura, etc.. The third time, after waiting 45+ minutes for a simple order of three sushi rolls THE FOOD NEVER CAME! The waitress never even acknowledged the delay. It wasn't even that busy.\r Never again Pros: If they ever bring you food it might be good Cons: terrible service more

great suburban sushi 12/18/2006

i have been coming to sushi zen through three owners now. the service is always wonderful. and, while the fish portions vary depending on the owners, i feel the product is pretty solid. i usually come here for lunch and feel that i get a lot for the money. i like the sushi deluxe and a stuffed pumpkin, both of which never disappoint. i also like the chirashi sushi lunch (not to be confused with the chirashi sushi bowl, which is disappointing) they are comfortable with subsitutions, too, which is nice for picky palates. try their pan friend oysters and tempura, as well. Pros: food and service Cons: bathrooms could do with a face lift more

Best Sushi & Friendly Staff 12/4/2006

I was so glad to discover Sushi Zen Mill Creek last year when I moved to the area, I keep going back. The sushi is fabulous, the rolls are creative and delicious. From the innovative rolls, I always order Crouching Tuna Hidden Shrimp and the Seattle Tempura Roll. On the traditional side, you can always get super fresh sushi with the Sushi Zen Special. My husband doesn't eat sushi or fish, and they have a good variety of cooked dishes such as Sukiyaki, Chicken Katsu and Pork Katsu. My parents had the Saba Shioyaki and Shrimp Tempura dinner and loved it. The staff is friendly, I remember the first time I was trying to get there I got lost and they were helping me find my way on the phone, then when I finally arrived they gave me an appetizer for free just for the trouble I'd been through. I've been to Japan and had great sushi there, and I can say Sushi Zen's sushi owes nothing to the good places in Tokyo. more
