Best

They have the freshest sushi, great rice, and a huge selection of sushi that run of the mill sushi places will not provide. Pros: incredibly fresh, fair priced, and a wide sel...

Worst

This place was SO hard to get into! We went with another couple, who just wouldn't eat anywhere else. "This is THE best!" we kept hearing. Our meal was rushed by the staff (they n...

Needs new plates and teacups 12/26/2003

Sushi is good and price is right. Still a popular place. But their teapot, teacups, and plates are in a sorry state. Pros: good sushi, good price, good service Cons: old teapot, old teacups, old plates more

Used to be Better 10/14/2003

This used to be one of my favorite Jap. restaurant. However, after they received an TV award and expanded their restaurant, the food has become smaller in portion. For some reason, the fish's not as fresh as before... They used to have better rolls also... Anyway, the staff is still pretty good, and you don't have be tightly packed with other customers as you eat like before. However, if they want to compete in the Bay Area, they'll have to do better like before. Pros: variety Cons: quality downfall more

Fresh Fresh Fish! 2/28/2003

I love going to this sushi restaurant. The fish is so fresh & the staff is very friendly. Wave at Sam behind the sushi bar. He knows how to say hello & goodbye in many different languages. Pros: fresh fish, friendly staff more

great lunch box specials! 2/3/2003

sushi is great - must try California Special, Sam's Special and Hot Dog. Everything else is delicious - sukiyaki is very tasty. The daily lunchbox specials is a steal. Pros: good value, friendly Cons: long wait, can get crowded more

Inconsistency a trend? 12/16/2002

My first visit was not breathtaking, but has been better since then. Based on other reviews, there seems to be a trend of inconsistency, whcih I've experienced myself. I've only tried two other places, but so far this is the best sushi I've had in the San Mateo/Foster City area. I've had better in SF, but at much higher prices. Note: I've only eaten take-out here. Pros: Cheap!, quick take out ime Cons: Inconsistent, parking nearby, crowded more

One of the best sushi places in CA 11/21/2002

I guess I'm just lucky but every time I've patronized this establishment I've had nothing but superior quality sushi. Very fresh. Very tasty. The only problem is that this place can be a madhouse during the dinner rush. It gets very crowded and loud. Would recommend going during off-peak times. more

Okay Sushi in the Bay Area 10/19/2002

Sushi Sam's, by far is one of the better sushi restaurants in the bay area. The sushi can be really fresh but there are some days when stale sushi has to be definitely chased by a lot of ginger and hot tea. I've tried a lot of sushi in the bay area and am still trying to find the best but so far nothing compares to Sasabune in L.A. Pros: decent price, decent sushi Cons: crowded, loud, inconsistent quality more

whats the hype? 10/9/2002

i have NO idea. Not that fresh, not that great. I've had better at the todai. Small, crowded, loud and crappy service but at least with a smile. Pros: they smile Cons: parking, price, quality more

If you like aged fish... 9/18/2002

If you like aged fish, then this is the place for you. Each piece of sushi is carefully aged like cheese so that it bears little resemblance to sushi and sashimi in Japan. Better to drive to the city. Cons: Aged Fish, Noisy, Crowded more

overrated. 6/27/2002

Very average. Another chinese run sushi joint where no one can tell the difference. Sushi was simply average. Nothing special. Not worth a half hour wait. more

Ichiban, No.1! 5/28/2002

What can I say about Sushi Sam's? The same thing that everyone else wrote about this Mecca of sushi. A friend introduced me to this establishment and I have to say I was skeptical at first. I guess because the atmoshpere is very unassuming. It turned out to be a ""Don't judge a book by it's cover"" lessons. The prices are outrageously inexpensive compared to the quality. It's well worth the wait. I shouldn't even be writing this because it's just going to make my wait longer! Pros: Inexpensive Cons: Long wait more
