BIG DISSAPOINTMENT 4/6/2010

We were celebrating a special guest that wanted the best shrimp in town. Our dissapointment started with the appetizer. What once was Steinies claim to fame has shrunken to less than average size. I ordered the scollop combo, what a dissapointment that was, 4 scollop and 3 shrimp with a smidgen of crab meet complete with shells for $29 served in a crock the size of a coffee cup. I'm all in favor of quality over quantity but there needs to be a middle ground. For that price there should have been atleast a half dozen of each and a decernable portion of shell less crab meat. My Martini was prepared as orderedbut for $11.75 the glass should have been full to the rim instead of only half full. The waitress was not concerned, she never returned to the table to ask how everything was. Cons: OVERPRICED PORTIONS more

Perfect evening! 3/4/2009

My husband and I had a wonderful night out at this restaurant. We found the service to be spot on!! Not only was our server very helpful with menu choices and recomsndations but also shared some very interesting historical information about the place. I found the atmosphere, food, and service to be everything I could have expected and more. Great place for a perfect evening! more

Over Rated and Over Priced... 12/4/2008

I am no stranger to fine dining restaurants and understand that this restaurant has been here for almost seventy years... but I can not honestly figure out why. The food... although descently portioned.. was horribly bland for the price paid. Their famous butterflied shrimp did not live up to the hype- even with their "secret sauce." All the food that I tried not only lacked taste but also imagination...after seventy years you would think they could come up with something with some sort of "WOW!!" factor. The ambiance was descent and the service was mediocre at best.... but I really don't see how it is a four star restaurant... there are way better local places in Norfolk and in Virginia Beach. The wine list was minimal for a so called "four star restaurant." Not the place you want to go to if you enjoy wine with your meal... and the server we had seemed to lack any sort of knowledge on wine that you would get a REAL four star restaurant. Overall... if you are looking for a good restaurant save some money and go across the street to Ruth's Chris. more

Awesome Place for a Wonderful Evening 2/11/2007

While this was my first time dining at "steiny's", it will definitely not be the last. The food was extraordinary and the service was exceptional. Although we happened to arrive on one of the busiest days of the year (the Saturday before ?Valentines Day?), not only did the manager, Brady, take a personal interest in making this a very special evening by seating us at a table near the fireplace. But, while we were waiting in the bar area for the table to come available, the bartender, not only enthusiastically shared some of this establishments ?history and family values? (including employees that have worked here for up to ?50? years), but, also checked on the status of our table (without being asked to do so). All in all, we had a wonderful experience here at "steiny's", and would recommend this establishment to anyone desiring an evening to remember. Clearly, it is easy to understand why this restaurant is a favorite for the ?locals?, and worth ?searching out? if you?re ?visiting? Virginia Beach and get a craving for some ?extraordinary seafood? (especially the fried shrimp). Pros: Exceptional food, service, view, parking Cons: Worth the wait more

Horrifyingly over-rated 1/7/2007

While service is always wonderful here at "steiny's", everything else is a waste of time and money. My husband an I both work in the industry, and this is by far the most unsanitary, disgusting place I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing. Not only was our food thrown together on its plate without a hint of presentation, but a long blond hair garnished my filet, and au jus was sprinkled onto my husbands pants as it was dripping off the side of the plate. When the owner, Brady, came over to see how we were doing, I explained my discomfort with the hair and such. He gave me almost a dumbfounded look as if to say, "well what do you want me to do?", and didnt even offer something to take its place. Eventually his mother, Jeannie, offered to take off $20.00 from the bill. And expected this to appear generous. As a manager, I understand the needs and wants of those dinning and spending a lot of hard earned money. The last thing I would ever do, had I been in the owners possition, would be to make my guests feel like they were an unwelcomed burden. Clearly I will not be returning, and I sincerely hope that you take this into consideration next time you have a craving for fried shrimp. Pros: Parking, service, view Cons: Spiders in the bathroom, unsanitary, lazy management more

great shrimp. 9/7/2006

MY WIFE AND I LIKE STEINYS BUT WE MISS STEVE...OUR HOST WILL NEVER BE REPLACED.STEVE AND HIS FATHER MADE OUR TIMES THERE VERY SPECIAL. Cons: TABLES TOO CROWDED more

Awesome Place for Surprisingly Great Price 9/4/2006

Myself and my fiance dined tonight for to celebrate our second year together. The food was absoltely delicious and the service was impeccable. We were seated quickly and our waitress was about as professional as I have seen. The food came out quick and our bill was a lot less than we thought for the quality of the food and service. The location was very nice too. The only thing I would change is have the tables a little farther apart. I WILL definitely dine there again and recommend it highly to anyone looking for great food at a terrific price along with stupendous and friendly service. Pros: Great food, Location, Service Cons: Tables close together more

Great meal ending in a romantic evening.... 1/19/2006

Our table was in a great secluded area, but if we'd been seated elsewhere I may not have been as impressed. The tables are close together and don't lend to an air of intimacy. The food was impeccable and my fiance and I had a wonderful meal. I don't remember exactly what we ate.....could be the fact he proposed to me out on the lawn behind the restaurant after dinner has clouded my memory. Pros: Great food Cons: Close tables more

You can't go wrong 7/20/2005

My husband and I celebrated our 1st anniversary in July 2004 and will definitely be back! The other reviews (except for the unfortunate gentleman who spoke of his wife's "burnt, very burnt salmon"), say it all. Outstanding service, delicious menu (though it caters to those of more traditional tastes), lovely atmosphere...right down to the fresh flowers on each table. You will need to talk a little softer than normal unless you don't mind your neighbors listening in! more

Great atmosphere 4/22/2004

I TOOK MY HUSBAND OUT FOR HIS BIRTHDAY, IT WAS OUR FIRST TIME THERE.WE BOTH WAS IMPRESS WITH EVERYTHING, THE FOOD WAS GREAT, WE SAID WE WILL BE COMING BACK AND TELL OUR FRIENDS WHAT A AWESOME TIME WE HAD, BEAUTIFUL, ROMANTIC, GOOD EATING. Pros: GOOD FOOD, ROMANTIC, REASONABLE PRICES more

I have been going to this restaurant since the early 70's and I can say this is the best and most of all consistently great food, seafood, selections on menu, service, etc. all catagories rate tops. more

So so 8/8/2003

The salmon was burnt, very burnt My wife was almost done with her meal till the waitress came back to see how we were doing and that is because I hailed her. The service started out great and ended up poor The fried shrimp was very good more

re: reservations 2/16/2003

The review was misleading as this restaurant does NOT accept reservations - only for parties of 6-8 or more. I don't know if I would consider it a "romantic" restaurant though. However, the food is excellent - especially their famous shrimp. I would recommend this restaurant to friends. more

Shrimp Appeal 12/31/2002

The best shrimp around - and a good carry-out value! Good food and great service! more

sex in the city 12/13/2002

Food was great, fantastic, wonderful. We were seated in front of the fire place which was great but the tables were too close together and this did not lend itself to privacy. Nice view out of the windows if you could see that far. Pros: VIEW, GREAT FOOD, GOOD SERVICE Cons: TABLES TOO CLOSE, PARKING IN THE WOODS more

Great 11/26/2002

Great time. We will return for our next anniversary celebration. more

Summer Soiree for Seventy 8/26/2002

With only Steinhilber's name and telephone number I was charged with arranging a wedding rehearsal dinner for seventy people. The actual count seemed to vary daily up until the day before the event. The management and staff were absolutely wonderful helping me with everything--even the choice of a florist. The evening was idyllic, beginning with cocktails outdoors on their lovely patio. The staff took complete charge allowing me to enjoy my own party completely. The food from shrimp and crabcake appetizers, through a delicious variety of entrees, wines and liqueurs, and key lime pie, was marvelous. My friends continue to compliment me for that memorable gathering. The credit, of course, is Steinhilber's alone. Pros: Beautiful setting, personal service, delicious food Cons: I can't live there more

Great food!! Reasonable Prices!!! 8/8/2002

This is a great place to go for a romantic night out! I love their food! Pros: Romantic more

Editorial
  • The Scene
This charming cabin (built in 1937) with its cozy fireplace has long been a local dining favorite. The wooden deck has lovely views of the Lynnhaven River; an open dining room with 20-foot A-frame ceilings recalls a small church from days gone by. The small bar off to the left serves as a holding area; with 60 different kinds of wine and 30 brands of beer, it's not a bad place to wait.

    The Food
Since 1939, this Virginia Beach mainstay has built a following by having the best jumbo fantail shrimp in Tidewater. In addition to its reputation, the split shrimp comes with a house orange sauce that's like Thousand Island dressing, but better. Other seafood entrees fare just as well. Lobster bisque gets smooth flavoring from a shot of bourbon; filet of flounder--golden on top; snow white in the middle--is overstuffed with shrimp, oysters or backfin crabmeat. Family recipes predominate. Don't bother asking for the secret ingredients. Just sit back and enjoy them.
