Editorial review from Citysearch 3/8/2013

I recently contracted to have a rental truck loaded in Seattle and unloaded in Sacramento. The Seattle Movers damaged two antique furniture pieces; a cedar chest and an antique dresser. Both were pushed on their wheels into door jams and legs were torn off. I was able to repair the dresser, but I do not have wood clamps long enough to repair the cedar chest. The is a family heirloom, made by my great uncle for my Grandmother. I will either have to purchase 4 Foot wood champs or have the piece professionally repaired. Other than that the load arrived in Sacramento without problem. None of the other property had shifted causing any damage. \r \r Fast Forward to Monday Presidents Day when we were to unload.\r \r Their crew arrived 45 minutes late. I called to see if they were even still going to show up. When they arrived, the driver immediately started a rant about not having a place to park and demanded I ask the apartment management where he could park. The office was closed on Presidents Day so I couldn't. \r \r There is a large municipal parking lot just north of the park across the street from the complex. Cheap at $10/day and both my girlfriend and I offered to pay for it. Please note because it was Presidents Day, the lot was half empty. Their driver said that wasn't an option.\r \r Then, as I pointed out to their driver and as pictures taken on my girlfriends phone clearly showed:\r \r Behind the complex, there was ample parking on the street, i.e. a number of places where there were two contiguous spaces able to handle a truck.\r \r Nothing we suggested would work for him! Is it really their policy as a residential moving company not to park anywhere but in a commercial loading zone? That was what we were told. How many homes are able to accomodate that? Please note I had been parking a 20 Foot UHaul in the Street both in Sacramento and in Seattle for days without a problem.\r \r In any case, after about a half hour of trying to come up with a solution, he snidely blew us off and left. \r \r Shortly after their driver left, we discovered that there was a large commercial loading zone behind the complex just across and down the street a bit that they could have used. Had they driven around the block even once to look they would have seen all of these options.\r \r It was obvious to us that they were just done working for the day when they arrived. \r \r I called and spoke to the Supervisor after they left. By then it was 3:30 in the afternoon on a holiday and I was not able to arrange for another moving crew from Starving Students or anyone else. Shawn and I finally agreed he would provide me another crew the following day. Frankly, I can't believe they employ drivers with such an unprofessional attitude and work ethic. \r \r This unnecessary delay has been expensive for me:\r \r Extra day for the UHaul $40 plus tax.\r Change of return airline departure $75.00\r Extra day of boarding dog $25.00\r Lost day of work $150.00 plus lost commissions\r Furniture Repair $Yet Unknown\r \r I emailed this information to their customer service group with no response!\r \r Don't use them!!! more

Beware of Starving Students Movers 6/18/2011

Every hour or two, the guys went for a ""cigar"" break. I would later find out that it was not really a cigar. Somewhere during the move, over $4000 worth of jewelry went missing, along with a prescription for Oxycontin from years earlier (and that's just what I know is missing so far). A few of the items are irreplaceable heirlooms. For example, one of the rings is (was) all I have left of my late father's possessions. \r \r I emailed Melanie in claims who told me that it was ""ridiculous"" to think that employees would smoke pot right in front of a customer and that there was no ""evidence"" that a theft had occurred, despite a filed police report, which seems to be growing daily as I notice more missing property. You see, two of the three guys went with me to take a load to storage while a third stayed behind to pack up the cabinets and drawers. Four hours later, when we returned, he had only packed an eight-place set of dishes and some glasses. I paid $120 for him to pack up less than $30 worth of dishes! It appears that he was busy pilfering my property, rather than packing. I thought these guys were bonded and insured - I guess not.\r \r The move appeared to be going in slow motion, I thought, as an attempt to pad the time but several furniture items were damaged along the way. I won't even know the full extent until I move out of storage. My solid oak dining room table was rolled from the truck to the storage room on its side across the asphalt. My dresser was turned on its side, with two of the top drawers full of items other than clothes. I don't even know what all might have fallen out. Certainly, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that you have to take the drawers out or unload them first. Surely, one could hear all of the property clanking around inside and falling out the bottom. \r Although the Claims Department (there is only one person who seems to answer to no one) is looking into the extensive property damage, they are not even willing to investigate the theft and drug abuse, essentially calling me a liar. Not once did Melanie ever tell me that they would look into the matter but immediately went into ""defensive mode."" Not only was I grossly overcharged but violated, insulted, disgusted and angered at how this operation conducts business. In our last email, I was patronized by the comment, ""I believe you believe everything you're telling me. That doesn't make any of it true or correct."" It certainly does not make any of it not true either. In other words, I'm some sort of nut job making this all up. How in the #@%& do you know if you never investigate?!? No wonder these guys feel so free to get away with this. Perhaps, a few personnel changes should be in order. \r To top it off, I had to hire a second crew of movers to finish the job these guys started. They only moved about 2/3 of my property and left the rest. They charged as much to move a few miles as it did a year and a half ago to move across state - I had much more to move then too. When I inquired about finishing the move, I was told, ""You can certainly schedule another move."" You've got to be kidding, right?\r I was told that this company makes 3000 moves a year and there are bound to be some complaints. Guess what Melanie, I'm only concerned with my move and the return of my property! How callous can one get?\r \r Do yourself a huge favor and DO NOT USE STARVING STUDENTS MOVERS!!! \r more

helpful 5/27/2011

Movers were very helpful and informed me of all information on forms before signing. They informed me of prices and mentioned ways to help make the move less costly. The movers asked questions about furniture and items before picking them up and moved me and my things within a 2 hour window. They were both very helpful and considerate. I would definitely use your services in the future and recommend your company to anyone looking for a moving company. Thanks again for your help! more

Very accommodating 5/17/2011

When the movers arrived at our home, they realized that their truck would not fit up our driveway. They worked with us; we ended up renting a 10' Uhaul and your movers loaded the 10' then took it to their truck and unloaded it. It added an extra 1 1/2 hours to our time, but the movers were very accommodating. more
