The food was fantastic!

Worst

Our first stop in a search for good Indian food in Salt Lake, as i am new to the city. Not impressed. Matar Paneer wasn't rich and creamy, nor was the Lamb Korma (and i'm used to ...

Paneer Pakora - wonderful! 5/19/2007

Not many Indian restaurants make a good paneer pakora. Thank goodness the Star is back in business because I have been craving this appetiser. The vegetarian dishes (the only ones I have tried) are fresh, tasty and not loaded with fat. I think they do an excellent job with their breads, and the lassi is very good too. My favorites: paneer pakora (of course!!), shahi paneer, peschwari naan, and lassi. This is a family run business that has a genuine passion for creating good food - not the greasy, re-heated stuff you get at some restaurants. If you haven't tried it, give it a whirl and enjoy! Pros: Tasty food that is not greasy Cons: The restaurant atmosphere is a little bland but who cares when you are eating good food! more

Best Indian food in SLC, on the pricey side 5/10/2007

I'm an Indian food junkie and have tried most of the local Indian restaurants. Royal India in Sandy is my favorite so far, but Star of India is the best in Salt Lake City, hands down, and I was relieved that it reopened after a fire destroyed its first location a couple years back. The masala and saag dishes are especially excellent, as is the lamb korma. I'm not as fond of their vegetarian dishes (I've tried veggie curry and the vindeloo) but I've never disliked anything I've ordered. more

travlntam 5/9/2007

Hint if you want a great value go for lunch. All you can eat one price! We live out of Salt Lake and feel it's worth the hour and a half drive! more

Too expensive for not-bad food 2/21/2007

We eat Indian food frequently. Although the food is not bad, it is definitely very pricey for the portion you get. Sure you get free nan with the entrees, but they will charge you $6 for 2 bowls of rice. more

Only okay. 12/5/2006

When I called ahead I asked the girl on the phone for their three best dishes: one lamb, one shrimp and one chicken. (We usually eat at Royal India but it was cold and I was feeling too lazy) She was very helpful. So I took her suggestions and called SLCwaiter to have the food delivered. It took almost 2 hours (to be fair not their fault- I guess its mine for not wanting to brave the cold to pick up food from Royal India) So when it arrived we were starving and really excited to try food from a new place. It was about $70.00 and we got maybe $40.00 worth of food. The naan was greasy-Royal India's is soft and fluffy. The curry was bland- Royal India's is spicy and flavorfull. The Chicken dish was Okay and they do give you a lot of sauces to mix in. The moral of this story is put on a parka and go to Royal India this place isn't really worth it. Pros: SLCWaiter delivery Cons: Portion for price more

Easily the Best Indian Food in SLC 11/20/2006

The Star of India has moved from their former location (there was a fire), to 400 South between State and Main on the north side of the road. Okay, now that's out of the way, I would suggest that everyone GO THERE! What I love most about ""The Star"" is that they take their time to make really special, really complex, really good Indian food the way it should be. So, if you're in a hurry, opt for the lunch buffet rather than dinner. But don't get me wrong, dinner is well worth the wait you may experience. The curries at Star of India are delicious, rich and spicy, the flavors are perfectly blended and authentic. I have found that other Indian restaurants in SLC, tend to keep things mild, even when I've ordered hot. At The Star, if you want hot, they will give you hot, without compromising any flavor. The tandoori grilled selections are amazing, particularly the chicken and the prawns. The samosas are some of the best I've tasted anywhere, always prepared fresh. The service at Star of Indian is warm and friendly with a family-run atmosphere. The new location is spacious and when completed, will be welcoming and an excellent venue for large parties. I highly recommend Star of India next time you get a craving for Indian food. Whether you are are a returning customer trying the new location for the first time, or new to the restaurant, you won't be disappointed in this Salt Lake City classic! Pros: Delicious. If you order a HOT curry, you get a HOT curry. more

Big Prices, Small Portions 11/13/2006

The food here is good. But an entree comes in a tiny metal dish served over a candle. A friend and I tried to split two samosas, which were way to greasy compared to those I've had other places, and one entree for dinner. We both left hungry and spent $18 dollars for the privilege. The Himilayan Kitchen down the block has better food, better service, and better prices. If you want good food in the area, go there. Pros: Reasonably good indian food Cons: Small portions, high prices for what you get more

Tasty, Bold and authentic! 9/30/2006

Star of India, is hands down, the best Indian restaurant in the city, and as good as any I have had anywhere in the world. The store is located in the same spot as the old Baba Afgahn restaurant. The new owners have taken over an adjoining room, doubling the size and seating capacity of the space. They are finishing the renovation, so the decor is a bit sparse, but clean and adequately appointed. Construction if finally finished on the parking structure located behind the restaurant on exchange place, so parking should never be a problem, and they validate, so it is free. Pros: Great food, freindly staff and now easy close free parking. Cons: Decor is a little sparse. more

Best Indian in SLC 8/19/2006

Forgive the decor - they are working on it. The best Indian food in SLC - in fact some of the best in the country and we've lived all over (Boston, LA, New York, Atlanta). This is authentic, homemade, fresh, Indian food. Pros: Excellent food, excellent service, good value Cons: Decor needs some work more

Small portions, very pricey, good food. 7/22/2006

My wife and I LOVE Indian food and heard good things of this restaurant so we thought we'd give it a shot. The atmosphere is good (they keep the, in my opinion, annoying Indian music very low which is a plus). At first I didn't mind that the prices were $12-$16 a plate as I was under the impression that that price included naan and rice. However, it only includes one or the other, not both which was annoying. The most disappointing part of the meal was the portion sizes. VERY small. Small main dish, ridiculously small serving of rice and for $3.50 you get one measly piece of garlic naan! Normally when we go out for Indian food, we leave nice and full with plenty of leftovers; I left wanting more and empty handed. For 2 entrees, 2 Sodas and two orders of Naan, we spent close to $50 with a decent tip!!! I will say the food was very good, and have no complaints there. However, for the price go to the Bombay house, same quality of food and you'll leave full with plenty of leftovers and a little more left in your wallet. Pros: Great food Cons: Very pricey for portion size more

The food is what's important 3/21/2006

The Star of India just reopened after being flooded out in a building fire. They have a new location and they haven't finished construction so be forgiving when it comes to decor. Besides, the food is the most important thing, especially in ethnic cuisine. The Star of India has, BY FAR, the best indian food in Salt Lake City. If you are looking for an authentic, non-americanized, indian meal--The Star of India is the place for you! Pros: Great Food, Good Price more

It was ok... 3/2/2005

I'm in search of the perfect chicken tikka masala. This was not it. It was a little bland - spicy, but lacking in flavor. The chicken pieces were tiny, though plentiful, and a little tough. The nan was good and it was included with the meal. The waiter was very attentive (though we were only one of two tables in the restaurant) and the prices were reasonable. Overall, it was fine, but nothing great. more

Best Indian in salt lake 5/26/2003

While coming from England to live in SLC, one of the main things (cuisine wise) I thought I would miss out on was a great curry (bear in mind London alone has more curry houses than calcutta and bombay combined, curry is the english national dish!). I was not dissapointed with Star of India, and indeed its a regular haunt for me now. The food is most definitely authentic and non-americanized (e.g. spicy and tastes of something!)- which is the only reason I can guess the bad reviews on here. Most of the other Indian restaurants in Utah are pretty poor by my standards I must say. If you like authentic cuisine, served by great people in a nice comfortable setting, and at a great price, get down there now! Pros: Excllent food, Great prices more

Nan can beat the Star! 11/23/2002

One of the best resaurants we've ever experienced. The people at Star of India are fantastic people and very friendly and sincere (no phoney waiters/waitresses). Eclectic atmosphere, truly a unique dining experience. Don't miss it. The food is authentic and extremely tasty. Not as Americanized as other places. Pros: Great Food, Relaxed Atmosphere, Easy to Get Seated more

Indian food makes me happy 11/18/2002

mmmmm.....indian food. I love this restaurant. I've eaten at dozens of Indian Restaurants, mostly in London, and Star of India as good or better than any of them. It is usually less expensive for better food. In my quest for more Indian food I've rarely found Mahkni Chicken, and never found one that's better than Star of India's. You should try it. As too parking, I've eaten there lots, and almost always have parked across the street or in front of the restaurant. -calvin Pros: yummy, food, nan more

What is going on? 8/13/2002

Why is this place consistenly in the top 10 places to eat in Salt Lake, when it's one of the worst places I've ever eaten?! I've eaten there with a large group and with another couple. Both times the consensus was the food was mediocre to bad and the service stank! I've had lots of Indian and this is the worst. I think the owners sit on City Search all day and vote for themselves. If you want good Indian in Salt Lake go to Bombay House...or anywhere else but here!!!! Cons: Pay extra for rice?, Hard to park, Bad service more

Not very impressed 5/20/2002

Star of India lacks all the elements of a good restaurant--the atmosphere is as bland as the some of the dishes, and the service is indifferent. While it's not a bad restaurant, per se, it leaves a lot to be desired. Pros: affordable Cons: food, atmosphere more
