simply outstanding food 2/16/2008

This place is incredible. At first I was skeptical that the actual taste of the food could stand up to the constant reminders about edible flowers and edible gold, but the french toast was literally the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. The owners are also the DJs, hosts, waiters, and chefs, and they come to your table to help you figure out what you want to eat. Each plate comes out in succession, starting with the cold salads and crudites, and following with the warm plates, and then desserts if you decide to indulge. We started off with a cinnamon sangria with edible gold, lavender lemonade, and a raw food platter. Spread specializes in exotic and weird organic fruits and vegetables, so this was a good opening. The miniature fruits and vegetables came with lavender guacamole, rose salt, and a vinaigrette. Then we had the most delicious mole with purple mashed potatoes. This was not like anything you'd get in Mexico, but nonetheless thick, rich, and complex, with detectable Indian spices. We finished off with the star of the night: the jalapeno cheddar french toast with caramelized brussel sprouts and shallots. I expected it to be savory, but it was the perfect balance of sweet maple syrup and caramelized vegetables, juxtaposed with peppery greens and slightly spicy bread. All I could think was, masterpiece. As if the food weren't new, interesting, and delicious enough, the service is friendly and helpful. They definitely understand that it can be daunting to navigate your way around a menu of prepared fresh to order, all organic, vegetarian, dishes change every night, gastronomical discovery, and they make every effort to accommodate you. I left the restaurant feeling romantically and religiously in love with this food, and completely sated, which is a feat in itself considering my garbage disposal appetite. The dishes are large (get three for two people if you're really hungry), but at about 15-20 dollars a plate, expect to lay out some cash. Pros: food, service, organic, new menu every night, social eating Cons: make reservations more
