Great food and nice atmosphere. The bar is beautiful and the music was great. Pros: food, drinks, bar Cons: bar can be very noisy at times

Great Dining Near Historic Sonoma Square 2/10/2010

A very interesting menu very well executed and reasonably priced. Optional portion sizes were welcome and the cheese selection noteworthy. Early on a Sunday evening, the space was busy, its family-friendliness evident in the contribution of a few children to the moderate noise level. Worth a special trip even if you're not staying in the area and worth regular visits if you live in the area. Pros: Great food reasonably priced Cons: Might feel a bit crowded on a busy night more

Cozy atmosphere 10/20/2008

Lately the girl and fig has been either great or horrible. Most of the times it's fine, but if you have a bad waitress, watch out! However, dessert has always been excellent and the location was easy to find. Pros: Good dessert Cons: limited wine list and questionable wait staff more

Some tasty food but not 100% authentic and snobby hostess. 10/7/2007

Found this place via opentable. Sounded really tasty, my wife is a serious Francophile. We arrived with our young son, who sleeps non-stop through meals and doesn't utter a peep. The hostess treated him the way Superman regards Kryptonite. But we are not easily bullied as a family and insisted on being seated as per our reservation. Anyways, from that point on things got better. The servers were nice enough. Salad was really tasty with pancetta and figs. Steak tartare well-prepared though not super fresh. Croque Monsieur was more of a ham and cheese sandwich. There was no hollandaise and the cheese was inside rather than the proper outside. Wine was good but not a huge selection considering the proximity to so many Sonoma vineyards. All in all a mixed bag. Some good food really poor attitude at the front door. Too many other excellent places in Sonoma to give this place our repeat business though. Pros: Some tasty french standards, varied menu Cons: Snobby attitude, not completely authentic, cramped more

One of my favorite stops in Wine Country 9/4/2007

It's not just the name of the restaurant that's great - it's the food as well. We were seating outside under an umbrella on their lovely patio, and we started with a couple mixed drinks a fig royale (like a kir royale but with fig syrup instead of grenadine) and a fig martini. Both were good. The green salad with grilled figs is a must - arugula, pecans, chevre, pancetta, and fig & port vinaigrette. Mom got an open-faced roasted pork loin sandwich with apple & apricot chutney, grilled country bread, and celery root salad that was surprisingly good. And I got a burger that was the most wonderful, gourmet burger imaginable with French herbs in the top sirloin patty, grilled onions, and mixed greens instead of lettuce. And my most favorite part of the meal was the lavender creme brulee. What a unique (and very French) recipe. The amount of lavender flavor was perfect - present in every bite but not overbearing. When I go back, the lavender creme brulee will be the first thing I order. Centrally located in the heart of downtown Sonoma square near the visitor center and Sonoma Mission, there are plenty of places to walk around and see before or after your meal. Definitely make The Girl and The Fig a part of your trip to Sonoma. This is my third time to visit Sonoma and the Wine Country, and this restaurant is one of my favorites. Pros: dessert menu, outdoor patio ambience, Cons: slightly pricey more

Simply the worst experience 8/11/2007

When you visit wine country you expect the servers to know the wine list - you also expect they would recommend local wine since you are visiting ""the"" wine region. Dont expect that experience here . As for the food - tired and weary. I suspect the name carries them because the food and service doesnt! more

ONE OF WINE COUNTRY's WORST RESTAURANTS 7/2/2007

I'm a local resident so I tend to know most of the restaurants in both Sonoma and Napa. Yet my first visit to THE GIRL & THE FIG was just this July of 2007. I found few locals but mnay tourists and the restaurant itself is charming; especially with its outdoor large patio (very cozy). Pros: Outdoor Patio Cons: Sub-Standard Service & Food Quality more

Good for lunch 10/27/2006

Ate lunch there last week. Food was very good, service great, and very interesting wine list. We had a wonderful butternut squash soup with blue cheese crumbles and pecans. They also have a wonderful cheese selection. I think the menu is somewhat limited for evening entree choices but good lunch spot. Pros: Service, setting, cheese Cons: limited entree more

The best local place to eat for locals! 8/31/2006

My husband and I love this place.! We always sit at the bar and feel like we're part of a family. The bartenders are welcoming and are part of the whole experience of our nights here. The hamburgers are excellent and the polenta is outstanding!!! We wouldn't spend our date nights anywhere else!!! Pros: right on the plaza Cons: not a place for brunch more

The best of Sonoma! 7/24/2006

The Fig & Arugula Salad is a signature dish, you have to try it and it's one of the best salads we've ever tasted. We had the mussels & fries and the garden vegetable fritatta special (we were there for brunch,) and they were both amazing. Perfect when paired with the white wine flight. Which brings me to the wine list - off the beaten path and completely worth sampling. The only slight disappointment was the lavendar creme brulee, which was far too custardy and heavy, but offered a very good balance of natural lavendar. Paired nicely with the Bonny Doon late harvest viognier. Don't bother coming here if you don't appreciate French-style cooking and fine wines. Pros: An adventerous wine list, delicious menu Cons: A bit loud, service can go either way more

Too Heavy 2/5/2006

The food was tasty, but a bit on the heavy side. Definitely worth going, but if you do, ask the waitress if the chef can go easy on the butter and oil. more

Lovely 12/19/2005

Pleasantly surprised w/ my experience at The Girl and The Fig. We made reservations the day of. Had a corner table next to a window to the main street, sitting in the back room might be uncomfortable, they're next to the restrooms. The Works was the first course. 3 different cheeses (the restaurants selection) with nuts, fig cake, olives, fruit and bread. Incredible and delicious. Large plate for 2 people. Next, the fig salad (signature salad) also large enough to share, equally delicious. Entree, duck cassoulet with sausage and herbed bread crumbs. As much as I wanted to, could not finish the entree or order any dessert. The table next to us recommended the lavender creme brulee. If two people in your party, it's great to share dishes and order more. Doing so makes it very reasonable in price as well. I will be back! Pros: Food, Ambiance - romantic, Bar Cons: Noise - a bit loud, Backroom seating more

Snobbish in Sonoma 9/11/2005

Like in France, the tables are tiny. I was hoping that, like in France, the food would be wonderful. Unfortunately, the food was less than mediocre, and our entrees were served lukewarm. The wine list is definitely unique. This may be the only wine list in the USA which forbids Cabernets and Chardonnays to be listed because, as stronger-tasting wines, ""they would interfere with the subtle tastes"" of their carefully prepared cuisine. If only the food lived up to their pretentious ideas! The wait-staff appear to be recruited for their snobbish attitudes, which are presumably a reflection of the owner's attitude a creative owner-chef who is, apparently, a legend in his own mind. more

Excellent finish to a wine country experience... 4/5/2005

Took the family there after a day of ine tasting. The place is very convenient to napa or sonoma. Fig salad and short ribs dishes are excellent. Also recommend the warm fig & thyme crisp if you like fig. Food, atmosphere and service was excellent!!! more

most fun in Sonoma square 6/30/2003

This is the best casual mid-range (in price) restaurant I've been to in a long, long time. They offer a 3-course prix fixe menu Sundays - Thursdays all day for $25, which I thought was a great deal. You get either a house salad or soup of the day, an entree (in our case it was a wonderful grilled polenta with portobella mushrooms), and a dessert (in our case, it was two scoops of blackberry sorbet in a crisp cookie shell). We also ordered the quiche lorraine ($11), which was the best I've ever had, including ones I sampled in France. It came with matchstick potatoes (kind of a takeoff on shoestring potatoes) and a salad. Our server was professional and efficient and made good recommendations. It was a beautiful day, and the restaurant seated us in their outdoor garden, but the interior looked just as nice and fun. more

This Girlie Loved it 2/18/2003

Great for a romantic fun Francophile lunch, but skimpy pours for a $9 glass of wine! Pros: food, decor, cheese course Cons: wine portions more
