I THINK I'M GONNA DIE 2/23/2008

This place was the worst indian food i have ever eaten in my life. We went to this restaurant with hopes of finding a new place for resonably good indian food. We did not have high expectations, never the less, Shalimar managed to dissapoint us. We ordered a curry dish and a chicken tikka (supposedly they have a tandoori oven). Both were extemely overcooked, and we suspect dipped from the same vat of greasy boiling water. The chicken tikka had an extra helping of luke warm grease, despite which the chicken was almost as dry as cardboard. The one dish that we did enjoy was the saag paneer although it was a bit creamy. To say the dahl was flovorless is an overstatement. The garlic naan tasted more like stale pizza dough and the paratha was overly doughy. We wouldn't return on a bet, and wouldn't recommend it to a hungry dog. My wife was complaining of stomach ailments within fifteen minutes; she think's she's gonna die. Pros: Courteous staff, prompt service Cons: Food more

FAVORITE Indian Restaurant in Nashville! 11/28/2007

I LOVE Shalimar! It is consistently wonderful every time I go. It's been a personal favorite for years. The food is delicious and the atmoasphere is quiet and unassuming, even though a little bit cramped. The only change I would like to see is Shalimar finally serving wine and beer, if not a full bar.\r Pros: Delicious Cuisine Cons: BYOB more

I got served old Indian bread.. 11/23/2007

I was there with my friend for lunch recently, I ordered the Indian bread(Naan) and vegetable curry, the Indian bread was brittle, Indian bread never becomes brittle unless reheated several times, I suspected it not being fresh and questioned the owner, he ignored and said People here like Brittle bread, that was big joke, rather he could have got some fresh ones ..\r Nashville has very few good choices of Indian food, Now Shalimar adds to list of Worst indian restaurants following Cusine of India, Sitar.. Pros: Good location, ambience Cons: Arrogant staff, stale food more

Sitar employees sabotaging Shalimar reviews - Shalimar is THE best Indian restuarant around 11/7/2007

I have received information that Sitar employees have been going around to different review sites and giving their competitors, especially Shalimar, horrible reviews. I personally know the owner of Shalimar and I can tell you the ingredients come from the best places, such as Indian import stores and fresh produce markets. The price is high because the ingredients aren't processed and the meat comes in fresh every day. It costs a lot for those high quality ingredients and therefore it costs a tiny bit more to eat there (it isn't such a huge deal - just go grab a menu and you'll see). The food is naturally good for you (the chicken soup cured my cold!) and Shalimar has consistently hosted celebrities and even the Mayor of Nashville many times. The owner lives in a mid-sized home and has a family of five - no flashy cars or mansions (proving that the prices aren't unnecessarily high, but are due to the high quality of food and ingredients, not to mention highly trained chefs). Going to Shalimar for lunch or dinner is never a mistake - if you're looking for something different and HEALTHY while having it taste a HECKA GOOD, go to Shalimar! Pros: great service, ridiculously good food Cons: area just a tad bit small, but still very romantic and pleasant more

Authentic atmosphere and enjoyable food 9/25/2007

In the several times that I've been to this restaurant I've enjoyed each one. The service is efficient and the food is delicious. I find that the meals are more bountiful than those at other Indian restaurants in town. I'd like to add that if someone is going to write a review of a restaurant, it should be done in a mature manner. The bad ratings I've seen are titled with childish comments. Of course people are entitled to their opinion and I absolutely respect that, but when displaying it on a website such as this its more helpful to hear criticism that's not full of irrational anger and unnecessary commentary. Facts are all I need. Pros: service, food, parking Cons: small, condensed dining area more

please don't go to this place ! 6/8/2007

I read some reviews on this site and thought of trying this restaurant. The day was good until we arrived at this restaurant. I was with some of my university friends. We had the noon buffet. I really wonder how come this restaurant has been rated the best. The quality of food was very bad. The interior was also ugly and didn't appeal me to come here next time. The staff was good but I think they don't clean the interior nicely. There was a kind of smell which gave me a headache, and after having food, I felt like I am gonna v0mit. Then things started going worse and worse. I and one of my other friends fell sick in the evening. Some people here have commented on the quality of ingredients they use and I can tell with challenge that the ingredients used were all inferior and stale, and that probably was the reason we fell sick after eating their food. And they charged a whoopping $14 for that buffet. It's definitely not a place to eat. I will prefer eating at Subway; atleast they have fresh vegetables. \r \r I don't recommend anyone this restaurant. Please stay away from this place. Pros: don't know Cons: quality of food, price more

WORST is the apt word for this stupid restaurant !! 6/2/2007

Beware junta:\r \r I just arrived from nashville and thought of writing my experience with this restaurant. I have been to many indian restaurants in nashville, murfreesboro and huntsville, and Shalimar tops the WORST restaurant I have ever been to. \r \r Food: They have very limited dishes and all the dishes have awful taste. They just have just one variety of rice, 2 varieties of chicken (one dry and one gravy), two vegetables (one gravy and one dry), one appetizer and one dessert. I cannot rate even a single dish to be as average or mediocre. I really felt embarrassed because I was with one of my american friends who has just started eating indian food. He used the word ""bland"" because it was indeed bland. The desert (gulabjamun) tasted like it was prepared years ago. It was very hard and rubbery. \r \r Price: Way to high ! Not a single penny worth it. (buffet: $13.50 !)\r \r Attitude: RUDE ! I didn't take cold drink and so I told the manager that I didn't have cold drink, and he replied in a rude tone that ""cold drink is incuded in the buffet; you have it or you don't have it, you have to pay for that"". I was stunned after listening to his tone. He behaved as if he has done some favor to us by letting us dine in his restaurant. \r \r Alternatives: ""SITAR - Nashville"" for Buffet & ""Woodlands - Nashville"" for Dinner !! \r \r Please don't try this restaurant; not even for a change. For more information, you can mail me at deepak_nitt@yahoo.co.in\r \r Pros: nothing Cons: overpriced, bad quality food, bad interior, rude staff, limited dishes more

over rated and over priced 9/19/2006

After reading reviews here and in a book on Nashville, we thought this would be the place to go for Indian food. We found the prices to be a bit high, which would be acceptable if the food was also above average, but it was not. The food lacked the wonderful perfume of Indian food - actually it was just about tasteless. There are better Indian food alternatives. (sorry) Pros: atmosphere is OK Cons: food is not even mediocre more

Worst indian food I've had and way too expensive!!!! 8/10/2006

Was not impressed at all. Coming from eating indian food in NYC and Boston I was not expecting much from indian food in nashville. But I have to say this is some of the worst indian food I have had especially considering how expensive the food was!! I ordered takeout and I paid $22 for chicken tikka masala, samosa and a nan. This is more expensive then food at some of the nicest indian restaurants in NYC and Boston!! The nan tasted and looked like some store bought pizza dough. The samosa did not have any flavor. The tikka masala is difficult to describe but had a chalky texture to it. I went to another indian restaurant in Nashville and the food there was about 10 times better then the food at Shalimar. And I thought that other restaurant was just average. Don't how so many people have written good reviews for this place. Maybe I just had bad luck. Definitely would not recommend Shalimar especially if you're looking for authentic indian food. more

Hit or miss, watch the quality of ingredients 2/19/2006

There are some good dishes, and some bad. The biryani is amazing - but its more south indian style. The tikka masala is above average. The only thing you have to watch with their ingredients is the low quality that they sometimes use for spices, food coloring, etc. more

Best Indian food in Nashville 11/25/2005

My wife and I have been coming here for years now, and it is by far our favorite restaurant. What sets Shalimar apart from the other Indian restaurants in Nashville is the quality of the ingredients. The chicken is all white meat, the food never tastes overly greasy, and the vegetable dishes are great. We always leave feeling great. The other Indian restaruants in Nashville use mostly dark meat that tastes overly processed. Shalimar is not cheap, but it's worth every dime. Pros: Great food, Nice ambience Cons: price more

I was completely disappointed 11/5/2005

My only experience at Shalimar was disappointing! To start out, the hours on the door were wrong, so I went twice just to actually get there when it was open. Then we sat in very crowded quarters with a table too small for our food and two couples virtually on top of us! Awful! The food was good, but the waitress told me that ""we would never be allowed to eat our food like that at home"" because I think she though I was going to start eating out of the serving bowl instead of putting it on my plate (which I wasn't). How rude! Our bill was very expensive on top of all that. I never want to go back and now that I have found Sitar, why should I? Except to maybe give them one more chance. Pros: Good food, Seemed upscale Cons: Congested location, Very expensive, Over-crowded more

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent 10/29/2005

The food is great and the service is excellent. I like Shalimar Indian Restaurant because they are nice to other Indians that dine there. There are few Indian restaurants in Nashville that are rude to other Indian customers (will not mention). These other Indian restaurant do not seem to acknowledge that Indian customers are providing business for them, but Shalimar and few others have exceptional customer service. The only problem with this resturant is the cost and parking, but eveything else is excellent, especially the food. Pros: Food, Customer Service, Ambience Cons: Cost, Parking more

Best Indian Food In Nasville 4/4/2005

After reading a few of the reviews, I felt it neccessary to share my own. I have been frequenting Shalimar for several years now, and the food is exceptional. My favorite dish is the Chicken Tikka Masala, it is always divine...the service is superb- the atmosphere romantic, and cozy. Other Indian restaurants in Nashville are adequate, but once I discovered Shalimar- I've yet to return to any of the others in town. Pros: romantic, cozy, great service Cons: parking more

Nothing Special 8/18/2004

If you want good Indian food, don't bother with Shalimar. Head to Sitar. Shalimar is over priced for mediocre food with small portions. Pros: Ambiance Cons: , Small Portions more

WOW 7/18/2004

i loved shalimar's food so much, that i actually signed up for this website and wrote a review for it. i dunno what to say...amazing, excellent, heAVENLY. THE service was beyond great and the food...bette than anything i have had in a long, long time. this is a rare place, so don't miss ur chance to dine at the country's best indian cuisine (my opinion...compared to cuisine of india, sitar, and maharaja) Pros: ROMANTIC!!!, great food, excellent service more

One word...GREAT! 7/7/2003

Shalimar is by far the greatest indian cuisine around! The food was excellent, especially the Samosas and mango lassi. the service was beyond excellent...i was seated very promtply and my order was taken as soon as i sat down. the atmosphere inside the restaurant was very romantic...i would recommend Shalimar to everyone! Pros: Great Service, Great Food more

The Worst! 7/4/2003

When I read the review other people left I was SHOCKED! I thought this was the worst Indian food I've ever eaten. My dish contained spinach and it tasted like the frozen generic stuff you buy at your local grocery store. To top it off the meal was only warm, like it had been sitting out a while. The service was average and the meal was too pricy for what I got. If you want good Indian food go to the Cruisine of India. more

One of Nashville's ""Greats"" 7/22/2002

Having frequented most of Nashville's ""top"" restaurants, I always fall back to Shalimar as one of my very favorite dining experiences. The food is addictive and the service is wonderful. One of my favorite aspects of this restaurant is the ambiance- it's in a tiny space which gives it so much character and warmth- and the family that owns/runs the restaurant is kind and sincere to all the guests. BYOB is an added benefit to Shalimar as there is no corking fee. It is an restaurant that all should experience! more

One of my favorites 7/16/2002

Shalimar is one of my favorite restaurants in Nashville, partly because the food is so good and partly because the people who own it and work there are so incredibly nice. My girlfriend and I walk in and they automatically start fixing our samosas, which, by the way, are fantastic. I've tried the chicken curry and the tandoori chicken, both of which are very good. The best dish, in my opinion, though, is the vegetarian dish Malaie Kofta-I order it practically every time I go. The basmati is great and the cucumber raita is wonderful. Don't forget that Shalimar is, curiously enough, BYOB, so don't forget to get wine before coming-The Wine Shoppe at Green Hills on Abbott Martin is great and very close by. Also, you get up and pay up front when you finish--it took us a while to figure that out!! Pros: Nice staff, Quick service, Good solid Indian foo Cons: BYOB more
