Food ok, service poor 2/10/2011

Definetly, they save money on server staff and serve themselves. That's why it takes a long time to get food. Question: do we should tip? No, who get then the money? Owner or manager? Trust me , they don't know how to tip properly, when they go to restaurants. Or just don't want to know. Waiters understand what I mean. more

best indian food in austin! 2/7/2009

I have been going here for years for their lunch buffet. I use to go every other week but over the past year they raised their prices !! Still, it is worth it. They rotate the main en tree of the buffet through out the week. Try going when they have their chicken 65 or butter chicken! more

Food was good but the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired 12/28/2008

Close to authentic Indian food. the curry dishes are great and the beer was ICE cold. Seating and atmosphere is not the best! more

SUCH GREAT FOOD, GET SOME DECENT SERVERS! 12/20/2008

This is very frustrating for me, I love Sarovar's food but the service and atmosphere is poor at best, good luck getting your drink refilled, or even getting someone to separate your checks correctly, so frustrating especially since it isnt the cheapest place around. Also dont ask for extra Nan or Rice cause they seem to want to nickel and dime you on everything!\r \r Will probably return eventually but would eat there a lot more if I knew I wasnt going to leave ticked due to crappy service! Pros: Great Food! Cons: Bad Servers, they Nickel and Dime you on everything. more

Gotta try the Spinach Chicken! 10/27/2008

I have been going to Sarovars for several years and I have seen it go through at least three remodling phases and it looks like they are at it again from my last visit. Now on to the food, I highly recommend the Spicy Spinach Chicken with Garlic nann as well as the Spicy Rogan Josh and the Chicken Briyani...Delicious!!! I have to agree with some of the other reviews about poor service because the past few times I have went we have had to wait along time for drink orders and refills. No one ever comes and checks on us to see if we are doing alright and when a drink is refilled it is usually by one of the bus boys and not the waitor/waitress. After all the remodling they have done the place still looks like it is in need of something and going to the restroom always reminds me of some underground back ally passageway to get there. However this being said I have never been treated rude by the staff ,they are just not very attentive and the food has always been consistantly good so if you do not mind waiting I am sure you will be pleased with your meal. Pros: Great Food and Nann Cons: Scary hallway leading to the restroom and long waits for drinks and refills more

Terrible Service 8/6/2008

Our dining experience at Sarovar started out with the waiter messing up our order and asking if we were the ones who ordered the item with the really long name. Then we waited for our iced tea and waited and waited. Our dinner finally came but still no tea. We were informed they were still making our iced tea, followed by a quick, ""Oh, wait they might have put it back."" Put it back? Put it back where? \r \r Then we finished eating, and waited and waited. No waiter would come near that section of the restaurant. Finally we flagged down the person busing tables and asked for our waiter and two to-go boxes. We got one box and no waiter. So after another 10-15 minutes with one plate of food already packaged up, we had to stand up and wave down another waiter. Ours had come near the table and smiled when we waved at him, but he had not come to see if we wanted anything. But the other waiter seemed to understand and came to the table. We asked for the check and another to-go box. We actually got the check, but no box. Out of curiosity we stayed after we paid to see how long it would take to get attention and a second to-go box. Wasn't much longer than 5 minutes before we flagged the person busing tables and got another to-go box. \r \r To be fair, I will talk about the food. We ordered two meals. Both were supposed to be medium spicy. One was mild to medium and the other was near scorching. The food did taste good though.\r \r Worst service I have ever had. You have your choice of the incompetent waiter who does not even know what is on the menu, or the surly waiter who sort of responds to some of your requests. Cons: Terrible Terrible Service. more

Less than average food 5/30/2008

We ordered palak paneer and paneer tikka masala (both medium spicy) with the thali to accompany it. Several of the thali appetizers were cold when they should've been hot, but they were otherwise tasty. The basmati rice was plain, spiceless and had peas and carrots in it -no sign or taste of cinnamon or cardamom. The palak paneer was too creamy and lacked flavor; the tikka masala had an okay flavor but was a tad too hot. Service was good and attentive. Also, the restaurant appeared to be very clean and tidy. Due to the poor taste of the food, however, we will not be going back. Pros: Thali, service Cons: Taste of entree's, rice, and naan more

Great choice for the palate if you're up for a large weekend meal... 6/6/2007

This is the first Indian buffet I've tried in Austin since getting in. The Lunch Buffet was quite spectacular - right from the crisp vadas, dosas down to the naans, daals, and sabjis everything seemed up to the mark for the price! I definitely think Sarovar's going to see more of me and my friends over weekend lunches! Pros: Variety of items, great tasting food Cons: A little on the pricey side! more

hardly what i would call indian food 5/8/2007

Ugh, where do I even begin? The food here is absolutely disgusting. My friend and I came here for lunch after reading all of the rave reviews....not quite sure what everyone was raving about, though because the food just tasted foul. First of all, there were very few options to choose from. What food was available looked and tasted as though it had been sitting out for quite some time. It also did not appear as though the food was being kept at the proper temperature. I hardly ate anything but did not feel very well pretty soon afterwards, probably as a result of the food not being fresh. \r The decor and atmosphere also did not add much to the unappetizing food. The booths and tables looked much less than clean. \r I'd say that $10 for a such a small and unfresh buffet is quite overpriced. I would much rather dine at the Clay Pit, which has a much tastier and inexpensive buffet. more

Tops my list 4/29/2006

Along with Swad, Sarovar is my top choice for Indian food in the city. Their menu is extensive, as is their buffet. I am a vegetarian and I always have tons to choose from. Their cuisine mixes northern and southern dishes, and it is mouthwatering. Their staff is attentive and the restaurant is immaculate. Most importantly the food is ALWAYS fresh and delicious. Their lunch buffet has vegetarian and meat options, soups, rice, 2 types of Indian bread, dessert and an array of raitas and chutneys. You will not be disappointed! Pros: variety of food, prompt service more

Excellent Indian Cuisine 3/1/2006

This was our first attempt at Indian food; we have since added this to our favorite restaurant list. The service was impeccable not only time-wise but our waiter explained each dish we inquired about and the basics of this type of food. The service and food were amazing and we can't quit talking about our first experience with Indian food. Pros: great food, awesome service, impeccable value more

This was my first experience with Indian food at a real Indian restaurant and I must say, I enjoyed it tremendously. I had average spicyness and it was just the right amount. I wonder what the most spicyness must taste like! The portion was huge. I had enough to pack it for a lunch the next day. And the bread (nan) was delicious. The server was great and explained things on the menu clearly. Pros: service, food more

Great all around 11/2/2005

Great experience. In my opinion, best Indian food in Austin. Welcoming atmosphere and very reasonable prices especially for the a la carte items. Dinners are HUGE, make sure you have an appetite if you order one. I have never waited for a table and have always been treated graciously. And parking is good. Pros: Inexpensive, Great food, Warm atmosphere Cons: None more

Good North and South Indian food 4/26/2003

I would rate Sarovar the best buffet in Austin. A good mix of south and north indian food. Their idlis are steaming in the buffet unlike in most places where its cold. A large variety of dishes for their buffet menu. Both veg and non-veg. Pros: Value, Variety more

good value... 11/20/2002

This is the place where you can have 'upma' to 'lamb curry' in the buffet for reasonable price!!! 'Dosa' is amazing, 'lemon rice' remembers your home food made for special occasions, rest of the food is mild spicy, i can assure that you'll enjoy the food!!! Pros: good parking, reasonable pricing more

Talk of the Town 11/8/2002

Excellent Authentic Indian food with reasonable prices. Don't forget to taste Mango Milk Shake / Mango Luccy Pros: Inexpensive, Good Parking Cons: , Crowded more

Unpredictable but yummy 10/15/2002

Sarovar has pretty good *south* and north indian food, which is rare. Their dosa are the best take-out in town, and are on par with those of Madaras Pavilion for sit-down meals. They have a great selection, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian (important if you have mixed groups!) The biggest problem with the place is its unpredictable service. Some days, they are great -- attentive, courteous and quick. On other days, they are abysmal. Don't go if you *must* be out of there quick. Highly recommended if time is feeling ""Indian"" :) Pros: good variety, good parking, short wait Cons: unpredictable service more

great food! 8/12/2002

I love this restaurant. The food is some of the best Indian I have eaten. The spice in it is great. I also like the atmosphere. It is nice and mellow, and not trying to be anything it is not. It is very nice to go to a restaurant that is pretty much all about it's great food. It is always easy to get in on a Friday, and there are also a lot of great vegetarian choices. Try it, it's the best. Pros: good food, nice atmoshphere, inexpensive Cons: service sometimes more
