Worst bar in Boston 12/11/2009

This place is a joke - never will I return. I highly recommend you visit someplace else. Pros: none - well, maybe the door as I was walking out Cons: filthy inside, terrible overpriced food, rude employees more

Best Club Scene in Boston for Reasonable $ 6/13/2008

Sanctuary is my absolute favorite place to go on Friday night. Get there around 11:30 if you like to arrive when it's already busy. The cover is only $5 on the weekend!! They play all of today's top music, with plenty of dance remixes. The main floor is very social and crowded (""Earth"" as it's referred to). The upstairs (""Heaven"") is more of a lounge bar area and has a faux star-studded ceiling that looks down onto Earth's level. Finally, the below-ground level is a cavernous dance party (""Hell"") - mirrored/rough-stone walls, full-service bar, dance poles, red lights and tons of air conditioning pumping all night makes this a great dance scene. If you're looking to have an awesome night that doesn't break the bank, try this place out. You will have a great time! Pros: Inexpensive cover charge; great dance scene Cons: Doesn't get busy until after 12 on the weekends more

DO NOT EVER GO HERE! 12/2/2007

My friend and I went here for the first time this past weekend. We were dumbfounded by the size of the club. Its long narrow Corridor of a floor was awful. It allows the place to get overcrowded way too easily. People tend to flock in the second floor (where the entrance is) downstairs was probably the best place to be in the whole building. Cons: awful music, bad atmosphere, too small and crowded more

Great place to meet new people! 3/27/2007

I have been stuck in a rut for a while hanging out at the same places... I heard about Sanctuary so I stopped in this weekend.... AWESOME! Pros: Great Crowd, Fun Environment Cons: Parking more

Bad for conversation 2/11/2007

I went over the weekend with a group of 16. It was nice that they were able to accomodate such a large group. The menu had a nice variety and it was tasty. I got the shrimp -- small, yummy and filling. If you order a salad, it might take some work. Some salads come with only huge pieces of lettuce that requires you to chop your own salad down. And if you ask for meat with your salad, they give you a huge slab, unsliced. We were upstairs and the music was so loud, I could barely hear the person next to me. Terrible for conversation. I asked to turn down the music in our area a couple of times to no avail. Service was slow but we had a really nice waitress. It took us forever to get our food and the food didn't come out at the same time. I'd probably go back to hang out but definitely not for dinner. Pros: trendy atmosphere, tasty food Cons: noise level, slow service more

Okay food, mediocre service 11/10/2006

I just got home from dinner at sanctuary and am mildly annoyed at the service. The waitress took forever to come take our drink order, and also took forever getting us refills. She was relatively inattentive despite the fact that she had maybe two other tables. We had a gift cerificate so maybe she didn't expect a good tip? Also, while we were waiting for our check another couple came in and was asedto sit at the bar and waitwhile the hostesses stood there and stared at a booth that had been dirty for about 15 minutes... I guess they were waiting for a bus boy to com, although he never did. Our waitress bussed and reset the table while we sat waiting for our check. Pros: yummy shrimp, great lobster mashed Cons: service, kind of pricey more

Ok for people in their 20s... 2/5/2006

This place can be very intimidating unless you are with friends. And, man, was it loud!! I tried talking to a couple of girls and they couldn't hear me at all. Come here to get drunk and dance. Conversation? Forget it. The bouncers were polite enough when I did a couple of ""inappropriate"" things (like sitting in a table that was reserved while waiting for friends to show up). Like I said, if you are an experienced night clubber, you will know the ropes. But if you are the kind of person who likes a (mostly) quiet bar, you will feel ill at ease here. more

good for small groups 11/28/2004

I checked out Santuary over lunch as a potential birthday dinner location for a group of 10 people. At lunch the food was a bit slow, cold, and the portions were small, but the flavors were inventive and tasty! The cuban sandwich was recommended and good, the Tuna salad was very delicious, as were the tempura shrimp lollipops, curry calamari and the sweet potato dumplings. The downstairs booths however, would only be big enough for a group of 5. We had the birthday dinner there anyway, and a kind bartender shoved some tables together upstairs. Everyone filled up on plates and plates of tasty tapas and drinks for about $25/person. It seems to be the perfect location for drinks after work or a group of up to 5 people. I wouldn't recommend it for dinner or a situation where conversation is important. Pros: buddha decor, food variety, nice bartenders Cons: , cold food more

it's aighty 10/3/2004

This bar is good on a friday or Sat night as i recommend sat night it seems more people come out to party.. One of the things i don't like is everyone seems to hang at the front of the bar and you can't get into the door, besides that it's okay.. If you go downstairs to dance prepare to sweat it is very hot could use more air down there.. Pros: location, good drinks more

Awesome place with little space.. 4/25/2004

My friends and I ventured out last Saturday to check out the Sanctuary. I'm not one for ""euro-trash"" bars or getting all gucci'ed up and spending $100's for a few martini's, but I heard this place was legit. The $5 dollar charge is a breeze (especially for boston) but the real reason you go here is for the BEAUTIFUL people! No joke but there were actually more girls than guys at the place, which is rare, and everyone just seemed to get along nicely. Despite it being pretty packed and with little room to bust a move, the service was decent with little time to wait for drinks. I didn't eat there so no idea how that is but the tequilla was to die for. Seriously, great once-a-month joint for that night you want to get dressed up, see hot people, and spend $8 bucks a drink - strong drink! Pros: good looking, strong drinks, good service Cons: , crowded more

Poor Management 4/1/2004

On a recent visit to Sanctuary with a group of 15 co workers, I was shocked at our treatment by the manager on duty. He appeared to be very irritated with the size of our group. He had us move three times, claiming he was expecting many large parties that evening. He huffed and puffed while literally storming up and down the staircase stomping his feet and yelling at our waitress. The area we were moved from remained empty the entire evening. I was horrified by our treatment, and would not recommend Sanctuary based on this, unless of course they lose the attitude. I did not find the food, drinks or atmosphere worth being treated second rate. On a positive note, I felt the waitresses and bartenders were very accommodating, and actually apologized for the managers behavior. more

So-So Sanctuary 3/4/2004

Sanctuary has a sleek exterior. The service was attentive, though few dined that evening. The white grape martini was good, though look to another for a stiff drink. We asked our waitress for recommendations and she provided popular choices. Based on her suggestions, we ordered the PuPu Platter and the Jamaican Me Crazy Chicken. The platter contained items from the tapas menu. We couldn't fault the ribs and the tempura shrimp. However, the others left us wanting more. The calimari was deep-fried then presented in a sauce, making it soggy. The sweet potato dumplings were bland. The tamarind chicken had potential but was over-fried. The Jamaican Chicken was dry. Overall, if you're looking for a hip joint, you can't go wrong here. However, if you are seeking a satisfying meal, go elsewhere and stop by later for drinks. Pros: ambiance, trendy, good service more
