My husband and I decided last minute to stay the night in SF on New Year's Eve. Knowing how things work in the city, we knew that we'd either be paying big bucks for a decent hotel in a good location, or we'd be staying way out in the outer regions of the breakers. To my surprise, I found Hotel Beresford--in the heart of Union Square--for a mere $109/night, and there was vacancies! We didn't know what to expect, but we were booking it regardless. To our surprise, it's a charming little place, with an old world feel. There's the White Horse pub and restaurant adjoining, and the hotel is a family-run business. Additional pros to the price was the hospitality of the staff--there was a complimentary bottle of Korbel for each room, in addition to decorations and party favors for NYE. The only cons to speak of are the fact that the place is severely low on amenities--the place smells like each room was chain-smoked in & there's no room service or in-room fridge--and we had a room that backed up to an alley, where a totally blitzed dude was serenading a trashcan. The pros, however, definitely outweigh the cons!
Pros: GREAT for NYE, awesome price, near Union Square
Cons: alley with drunk guy, old property, low on amenities
