I’m a born Yankee but have lived in Raleigh for many years. One of the things I miss about living up North is the neighborhood taverns – the places you can go and feel at home, c...

Worst

I went with a couple of my friend to Sammy's that place sucked you would think that the way the view looked from Avent Ferry Rd that it would be a good atmosphere but, i think not...

Super Sports Bar 9/12/2006

Went there the other day to watch football on the first day of the NFL. Great specials. Good service. LOADS of TV's. Had a lot of fun with my buddies & meet a good looking girl. Wings are best I've had since I left NY. Pros: Lots of TV's, Good food, Good service more

Great Place 9/10/2006

This place is awesome. I read some of the reviews here and they don't do this place justice, most of them are several years old. I have been going to Sammy's for quite a while and the service has always been great, and the bartenders are some of the best in Raleigh. I'm not sure what some of these people (or maybe its all the same person) did to the bartenders to have them yell at them but that has never been my experience. If you are trying to watch a game or many games, there really is no other place to be. They have close to 50 TV's now, of which they seem to routinely change out (they just installed all flat panels behind the bar and on some walls I think). You can watch more than one game, listen to all of them via these little speaker boxes they have (which NO OTHER PLACE HAS), and even do this on the deck, which they just expanded. Like I said, if you are going to watch more than one game (read college/nfl football), then you want to give Sammy's a try. The food there is great too, its bar food, wings and pizza and such, nothing gormet, but its a sports bar I'm not really sure what you are supposed to expect. As far as the wings go they are close to the best I have ever had, but honestly on game day the most important thing is the beer, which seems to flow nice and cheaply. I've been there a few times at night as well, and I was suprised that there is quite a nice night scene there as well. Overall this is definitely a place worth going to. Pros: Great Atmosphere, Good Service, Amazing Patio more

Great Food, Great Atmosphere 9/9/2006

I have been going to Sammy's for four years now. My friends & I love hanging out there. The food is great & every bartender I've dealt with has been polite. The servers do a good job - just nice girls. Plus the management seems to update things regularly. The last time I went in I noticed 6 new tv's at the bar. John Dupree is great on Friday nights. Plus, every day there's a good drink special. If you want to go somewhere with friends to hang out & don't want the trendy glenwood scene - Sammys is your place. Pros: Best selection of food and drinks at great prices, 7 days a week Cons: Bathrooms could be nicer more

Hanging on by a thread 9/7/2006

How is this place still open? In it's hayday it was a great place to drink a beer on the patio and catch the game, now it's a dirty bar with subpar food and crappy service. I used to love the place in college but everytime I try to give it another change, I'm always disappointed. \r \r I usually try to support locally owned business but unlike corporate chains, if you make a complaint you out luck if management doesn't care. Sammy's could really care less about it's customers. Atleast that is how I've felt anytime I 've had an issue.\r \r I've attempted to order from them through Raleigh Takeout (I actually love their chicken fingers so that's what has brought me back in the past) Of the two times I've ordered through Raleigh Takeout my order has yet to be correct. It's just part of the territory now. I expect to be disappointed.\r \r I doubt this place will make it another couple of years due to the way they treat customers... so maybe this is all a waste of breath, but with all of the great sports bars to choose from in Raleigh, I wouldn't waste my money at Sammy's. Pros: location Cons: dirty. slow service. indifferent management more

Horrible bartendars 3/15/2006

If you want to be insulted or treated poorly, then I would highly recommend Sammy's. The bartenders are on a power trip therefore they do not care about the service that they bestow upon their bar patrons. They also need to brush up on their mix drink skills. If you do end up going to Sammys I would recommend sitting at a table instead of at the bar. Cons: poor service, rude bartenders more

More than a sum of the parts 10/6/2005

The food is inconsistant, (one day the nachos are fresh and crisp, another they're soggy and stale), the waitstaff is pleasant but sloooow and easily confused (I ordered chili on my nachos and got chicken; I ordered unsweetened tea and got syrupy sweet, etc), the televisions are turned up wayyyy too loud (my ears are STILL ringing!), but if you add up the things that hard to put a finger on or describe, somehow Sammy's is still a nice place to gather with friends, hopefully if your not in a hurry or too picky whether or not your order is correct. Pros: Atmosphere, Pleasant waitstaff, Good value Cons: Slow, Messed up food orders more

Cool Hang out 9/7/2004

Sammy's is a cool hang out because they have good beer specials, ok bar food, and a lot of T.V.'s. However, they allow you to seat yourself but do not always acknoledge you with in five minutes. You have to search for your own napkins and ash trays most of the time and service is generally slow. If you ask if they have a Hefeweisen, as server may tell you ""The closest we have to a Hefe is Guiness"". (They have Hoegaarden). All in all if you are going to Sammy's to look at their waitstaff by all means they have some pretty girls there but if you are going for knowledgable good service that is efficient, you will get frustrated. Be careful when you sit on the patio a lot of the chairs are broken!! Pros: good beer specials, A lot of T.V.s, nice patio Cons: , slow service, unknowledgeable staff more

Fun 4/1/2004

Sammy's is a fun place to go with NTN triva, great burgers, excellent staff and always good beer specials. The only complaint I have is their appertizers are lacking and the wings are tiny. All in all though, it is a great place to hang out, watch a game, or just blow off some stem! Pros: Beer Specials, good parking, Burgers Cons: , wings, small, limited seating more

Sammy's Live Music 9/6/2003

Even though Sammy's is usually a great place to meet friends and talk, the live music is a downer. Sammy's has live music at least once a week, and they charge a couple dollars for cover. The live music is always terrible, and the high volume makes conversation impossible. I think THEY should pay US to come in on live music nights. Pros: Great food, inexpensive Cons: awful live music, too little parking more

Great Place to Unwind 7/15/2003

I don't understand the complaints about service - never had a problem with it myself. If you want fast service, Burger King is next door. If you want a place to go unwind, relax, enjoy some time with friends, get a drink or some good food for a good price, enjoy the many many big-screen TVs or a trivia contest, this is the place for you. Lots of ""regulars"" makes for a ""Cheers""-like atmosphere, where friends old and new come to meet and hang out. It's my favorite place to go after work, and being able to walk there is just adds to the A+, though parking has never been a problem. Pros: Atmosphere, inexpensive, parking Cons: Sometimes smoky more

its changed 7/6/2003

I've been going to Sammy's for a couple of years and I must say that it has changed. The service used to be great along with good food, and a great atmosphere, but its changed. Instead of the staff that felt like they were good buddies you have a low budget attempt at Hooters. It used to be a place where your server guy or girl was down to earth and friendly, now some of the newer girls seem to have to much attitude. Pros: good food, not to crowded, atmosphere Cons: service change, price changes more

Used to be good place 3/2/2003

Sammy has excellent food, a great location and a warm decor. HOWEVER, as of the last few months the service has become DEFINITELY POOR. The Hooters-style bartenders, service and attitude is turning a real sports bar into a painfully annoying low budget hooters knock off. Until Sammy's FIXES their service, go seek some place else - don't waste you money !! OR be prepared for worse service in Raleigh. Remember you've been WARNED !! Pros: Food, Location, Decor Cons: service, service, attitude more

State's College Bar 12/16/2002

The largest sports bar near NCSU, lots of TV's with different feeds, lots of sports. Live music on Friday nights. Great trivia contest every Wednesday night. Fantastic food and good choice of beers. Has connection to NTN for those interested in trivia alone or with friends. Large outdoor section for warmer times as well. Staff is friendly, polite, helpful, and the women who work there are ALL beautiful. I love Sammy's. Pros: inexpensive, people, beer Cons: parking more

Ultimate Sports Bar! 12/14/2002

Sammy's sauce for the wings is UNIQUE and OUTSTANDING - a must for wing lovers! The caesar salad was A+, the mushroom burger was excellent and the philly cheese was a beauty! The monsterous quantity of fries and onion rings was enough for the whole table and they were nicely seasoned and cooked to perfection! Pros: value, atmosphere, tv's more

NCSU Lunch place 11/22/2002

I enjoyed the food at Sammy's when I ate today, but I was a little disappointed in the slow service. It was by no means terrible, but I thought that compared to most restaurants around campus (who know that most of their lunch patrons are employees who only have an hour), it was a bit too slow for my comfort. I was too worried about getting back to work to enjoy my food -- which by the way was very good and reasonably priced. I think this is a good restaurant and sports bar, but probably not somewhere I go often to eat for lunch when I am in a hurry! Pros: good food, good prices, good parking Cons: kind of slow, not a lunch place more

Friendly Service 7/17/2002

Great Patio and lots of TVs. The service was really great. They kept track of everything. The food was amazing too. Pros: Inexpensive, Great Service, College Environment more
